Falling Into the Forbidden

Chapter 2: Unraveling the Truth

Maddie didn't leave King Enterprises right away. There was something magnetic about Elijah King—something in the way he spoke, the way he made her feel as if she were on the edge of a precipice, just waiting to be pushed. She knew it wasn't just about the case anymore. Something else lingered in the air between them, something unspoken but undeniable.

But she wasn't going to give in to it. Not yet.

She stood on the balcony of her high-rise apartment later that evening, the cool breeze running through her hair, and stared down at the city below. It was a place she knew well—cold, indifferent, and full of opportunities for those who were willing to take risks. She had always prided herself on her ability to keep things separate: work, emotions, life. But after her meeting with Elijah, those lines felt blurry.

She had made a decision before she walked into his office—she wasn't going to get involved in whatever game he was playing. But now, with the letter still sitting on her kitchen counter, the weight of his words hung over her like a storm cloud.

"You're already hooked."

She shook her head, as if she could physically rid herself of the thought. But the truth was, the man had a point. There was something about him—something darkly compelling—that made her wonder if she could resist at all.

The next morning, Maddie found herself at her desk, surrounded by towering piles of paperwork and the ever-present pressure of billable hours. But the case from King Enterprises kept creeping into her thoughts.

"Are you planning on taking that case or what?" Jenny's voice broke through her concentration, startling her.

Maddie hadn't realized how much time had passed. The office was quieter than usual, everyone too engrossed in their work to notice that Maddie was a little too distracted. "I haven't decided yet," she said, her eyes flicking back to the letter. "But I don't like the idea of getting tangled up with someone like Elijah King."

Jenny raised an eyebrow. "You mean someone like him? Dangerous, mysterious, and apparently able to offer you more money than you've made in your entire career?"

Maddie snorted, setting the letter aside and trying to regain her focus. "It's not just about the money. There's something off about him. I can feel it. And I don't trust him."

Jenny leaned back in her chair, crossing her arms. "Well, I get why you'd feel that way. He's not the type of guy to make friends. But if you can stomach it, the payout would be huge. You could name your price. A chance like this doesn't come around every day."

Maddie stared at the papers in front of her, fighting a wave of frustration. Was it really just the money that was tempting her? Or was there something deeper at play—something she wasn't ready to confront?

The idea of working with someone like Elijah King scared her. But it also excited her in a way she couldn't explain.

By noon, Maddie found herself standing outside the sleek glass building of King Enterprises once more. Her fingers drummed nervously on the strap of her bag as she entered the lobby, her heels clicking sharply against the polished floor. It wasn't like her to second-guess herself, but this time, everything felt different. She hadn't realized how much of her was already invested in this case until she stood before the elevator, waiting to be taken back up to his office.

When she reached the top floor, Elijah was waiting for her in the same spot, his back to the window, looking every bit as commanding as before. He wore an expression of quiet intensity, as if he knew exactly what she was thinking.

"You came back," he said, his voice low and knowing.

"I still haven't decided if I should be here," Maddie replied, her gaze scanning the room. "You said you would explain the situation. So, explain."

He nodded, stepping toward her with measured steps. "The case I need your help with is... delicate. It involves my company, yes, but also a few other parties. People who have powerful connections in places that would make your head spin. And then there's the matter of the person who's at the center of it all. She's someone I care about—someone I need to protect."

Maddie narrowed her eyes. "You expect me to believe this is just about protecting someone?"

"There's more at stake than you realize," Elijah replied, his gaze unwavering. "My company is under threat from several angles. There are forces out there who want to see it destroyed. They'll stop at nothing to get what they want. That's why I need you."

Maddie felt a surge of skepticism. "So, I'm supposed to believe you—someone who's built an empire—are suddenly in need of my help because of a 'threat'?"

Elijah's expression didn't change, but there was a hardness in his eyes. "This is not about a simple legal battle, Maddie. This is about survival. The stakes are much higher than you think."

Maddie's mind whirled with questions. She had heard rumors about King Enterprises—of shady dealings and mysterious business partners, of power struggles and betrayals. But none of it added up. "Who exactly is the person I'm supposed to be helping? And why haven't you mentioned her before now?"

Elijah's jaw tightened. "Her name is Victoria. She's… family. And the people who want her gone will do whatever it takes to make it happen."

The name struck a chord in Maddie. Victoria. There was something oddly familiar about it, but she couldn't quite place it. "Family? You mean a sister, a cousin—?"

"No," Elijah cut in, his tone sharp. "Not exactly."

Maddie frowned. "Then what do you mean? This all sounds like a game, Elijah. You're asking me to risk everything for someone I don't even know. And you're giving me nothing to go on."

He stepped closer to her, his presence overwhelming. "What I'm offering isn't a game. It's a chance to be part of something that could change the course of everything—for both of us. But if you're not willing to take that chance, I understand."

Maddie's pulse quickened. He was making it sound like a choice she could walk away from, but there was no way she could. Not now.

"I'll help you," she said before she could stop herself. The words felt final.

A flicker of something—satisfaction, perhaps—flashed in Elijah's eyes, but he didn't say anything right away. Instead, he motioned for her to follow him. "Good. We have a lot to discuss."

The next few hours were a blur. Elijah showed Maddie a series of documents—financial records, legal loopholes, and a slew of names of people connected to the case. As he spoke, he was all business, explaining the complex web of alliances and enemies surrounding King Enterprises. Maddie tried to absorb it all, but the more she learned, the more questions piled up.

By the time they finished, it was well into the evening. Elijah stood by the window, his silhouette framed by the dimming city lights. "I'll leave you to think it over tonight," he said, turning back toward her. "You've seen the facts. Tomorrow, we'll move forward."

Maddie nodded, her mind still racing.

"You're sure you're ready?" he asked, his voice soft but edged with something unreadable.

She hesitated for a moment before answering, "I don't know. But I guess there's no going back now."
