Falling Into the Forbidden

Chapter 3: The Deeper Game

Maddie couldn't shake the unease that clung to her after leaving King Enterprises. The elevator ride down had felt like a slow descent into uncertainty, the weight of Elijah's words pressing down on her shoulders with every floor. She'd agreed to take the case—more out of instinct than logic. But the more she thought about it, the more tangled the web seemed. It was like stepping into a storm, knowing that the calm would come only after the chaos.

As she stepped out of the glass doors of the building, the brisk evening air hit her face, but it did little to cool the heat in her chest. Her phone buzzed again. The same message—"If you go through with this, you'll regret it. Trust no one, not even him."

Maddie's fingers tightened around the phone as she read it again. The anonymous warning sent a chill down her spine. Who could be sending this? And why did it feel so ominous?

She stuffed the phone back into her purse, dismissing the message for now. She couldn't afford to dwell on it. Not with everything else she had to figure out. But she couldn't stop the gnawing feeling that she was walking into something far deeper than she could imagine.

The next morning, Maddie sat at her kitchen table, staring at a fresh cup of coffee that had gone cold. The case from King Enterprises lay in front of her, but her mind refused to settle on it. Instead, her thoughts circled back to the warning text. Was it just a threat? A scare tactic to get her to back out? Or was there someone else involved—someone who knew more about the dangers of the case than she did?

She glanced at the clock. Time was slipping away, and she needed to meet Elijah. She could no longer afford to procrastinate, no matter how unsettled she felt. With a deep breath, she grabbed her things and headed for the door.

At King Enterprises, the atmosphere felt different this time. The receptionist's smile seemed a little more forced, her eyes flicking nervously toward the elevators as Maddie stepped inside. It was almost as if the building itself had grown colder overnight.

Elijah was waiting for her on the same floor, his office as pristine and imposing as it had been the day before. This time, though, Maddie didn't feel the initial spark of intrigue that had drawn her in before. Now, all she could see was the danger in the shadows—the edges of a world she wasn't sure she belonged in.

"You're here," Elijah greeted her, his voice calm, but there was something darker in his eyes today. She hadn't noticed it yesterday, but now it was unmistakable—a flicker of something hidden just beneath the surface.

"I'm here," Maddie replied, her voice steady, even if her heart was racing. "But before we go any further, I need you to answer something for me. What's really going on here, Elijah?"

He raised an eyebrow, but didn't immediately respond. Instead, he gestured to the chair across from his desk. "I've been straightforward with you, Maddie. I told you what you need to know. The rest… will come with time."

She narrowed her eyes. "That's not good enough. I need more than vague promises. You asked me to trust you, but trust isn't something I give away easily. And you're making it harder by keeping things from me."

For a moment, there was silence between them, thick and heavy. Then Elijah leaned forward, his expression serious. "I've never been one to explain myself, Maddie. But I will tell you this: The situation you're walking into isn't something you can undo. There are forces at play that go beyond anything you could've imagined. What I'm offering you is a chance to protect the people you care about, the ones who need your help."

Maddie felt the shift in the air as he spoke. His words were carefully chosen, but they didn't match the tension in his voice. There was something else—a deeper story he wasn't telling.

"What people?" she pressed, trying to get a read on him. "You mentioned Victoria before. Who is she really? And why is she so important to all of this?"

Elijah's jaw clenched, but he didn't answer immediately. Instead, he stood and walked over to the window, staring out at the city below. "Victoria isn't just anyone. She's tied to my past. A past I've worked very hard to keep buried."

Maddie felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. "Buried how?"

Elijah turned back toward her, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her stomach tighten. "Some things are better left alone, Maddie. Some people are dangerous to know. And Victoria? She's one of them. But I owe her. And that's why I need you."

The weight of his words hit her like a punch to the gut. She had come here for answers, but now all she had was more questions.

"I'm not a fool, Elijah. You're not telling me everything." Her voice was firm, the edge of frustration creeping in. "If you want my help, I need the whole story. No more games."

For the first time, Elijah's mask slipped, just for a fraction of a second. His eyes darkened, and his lips pressed into a thin line. "You don't understand what you're asking. There are people who will do anything to get to Victoria. They'll stop at nothing. If I don't protect her, I lose everything."

Maddie felt a chill run through her. "And what happens to me if I get involved? You say you're offering me a chance to change everything—what if it changes me instead?"

The room fell silent, and for a moment, it seemed as though Elijah was going to walk away. But then he spoke, his voice low, almost too quiet to hear. "You're already changed, Maddie. You just haven't realized it yet."

Later that afternoon, Maddie sat in her car, staring at the message on her phone again. "Trust no one, not even him." The words burned into her mind, each one like a warning she couldn't ignore. But what did it mean? Who was behind it?

A soft knock on her window interrupted her thoughts. She jumped, startled, and quickly rolled down the window.

Jenny stood outside, her expression tense. "Maddie, I need to talk to you. Something's wrong. I've been looking into King Enterprises, and I found something you need to see."

Maddie's heart raced. "What did you find?"

Jenny hesitated, glancing around before speaking in a hushed tone. "I don't know how deep this goes, but there's a connection between Elijah King and Victoria that's not what he's telling you. I found an old file—one that ties them both to something much darker. Something that could destroy both of them if it gets out."

Maddie's stomach dropped. "What are you talking about? What kind of file?"

Jenny shook her head, her voice barely above a whisper. "It's bad, Maddie. Really bad. And if you're going to stay involved, you need to know what you're getting into. Elijah's not who he says he is."

Maddie's mind raced as Jenny handed her a folder, filled with photos and documents that painted a picture she wasn't ready to see. The name "Victoria" appeared repeatedly, but not in the way Maddie had imagined. This wasn't just a legal case—it was something far more personal. Something dangerous.
