Fixing A Broken Mask

Chapter 8: The First Day

It was UA High's first day of school, and all the students were excitedly hurrying toward their classes. While the students were on their way, a boy who seemed to be a freshman wearing a white, smiling mask with a lime green hoodie and navy jeans walked in the opposite direction. Some students looked back, wondering where he was going instead of attending class. Soon, rumors spread that a freshman who didn't wear a UA uniform and a smiling mask roamed the halls as if he were a ghost.

When the school bang rang for the beginning of Homeroom, Dream walked into a room and saw Mr. Yagi flipping through a notebook. Casually closing the door, Dream walks towards a couch in front of Mr. Yagi's desk and lies down. Feeling imprisoned in the school building, Dream tries to think of something to do to kill his boredom.

"I know the small bear-mouse said I could explore the campus while this deflated muscle hero is working, but where should I go first?" Dream thought to himself as he looked at his map of the school through his mask. "I like how the support department thinks around here. With their help, I could install code onto my mask and now look up anything I want." The mask that Dream got from the Support Course of UA was something close to Iron Man's helmet. He could see through the mask as if he wasn't wearing it and could get any information that would help him in a crisis. Still, right after returning it to Mr. Yagi's house, Dream coded independently, and now he could get any information. He could find their security code and medical records even by looking at someone.

While Dream looked over the whole school campus map, Mr. Yagi muttered, "So they've got Aizawa, huh...." Hearing this, Dream looked over to see that Mr. Yagi was most certainly concerned about the 'Deku' kid, and he remembered meeting this 'Aizawa' before today. His full name is 'Aizawa Shota,' and he is a slender, tall, pale-skinned man with messy, shoulder-length black hair partially hanging in front of his face and half-opened black eyes. His facial hair is almost always stubbly and unkempt, and his eyes are tired and flat. His appearance screams, "I'm tired and just woke up. So don't bother me." He wore a baggy black outfit with a long-sleeved shirt and matching pants tucked into his boots. He also wears a utility belt and his signature wrap scarf. From Dream's impression of Aizawa, he seemed cold, numb, and impatient, which immediately caught Dream's attention.

"Now let's see, where is Aizawa's class?" Using his mask's abilities, Dream could find out Class 1-A's schedule and go straight to the P.E. Grounds. So, after getting the location, Dream got off the couch and walked out the door, not saying a word.

The P.E. Grounds consist of various locations for various fitness tests, like a running track for the 50-meter dash, a sandpit for the long jump, and a pitching circle for the softball throw. After arriving at the P.E. Grounds, Dream climbed up one of the trees nearby to watch how this apathetic teacher can teach kids to be 'Heroes.' Dream got his answer quicker than he thought he would. He could tell from the students' expressions that something terrible would happen to them, but he was too far away to know what that 'something' was and what would cause 'something.' Some students were worried, but others were full of confidence. "So these are 'Deku's' classmates." Dream started scanning the student's information. He recorded the results of each student in order.

The first was a test of speed, the 50-meter dash, and the first to run was a boy and a girl. The boy, apparently Tenya Iida, is a relatively tall and muscular young man with a wide frame. He has short dark blue hair, flattened neatly down and parted on the right side of his head, a small patch completely shaved near the base of his head, and square eyes that match the notably pointed shape of his jaw. He usually wears a serious expression, and his eyebrows seem permanently pointed inwards, quite thin and long, the far ends sharply hooked inwards, and he wears glasses with rectangular lenses. "His ability or 'Quirk' is most likely the incredibly thick calves shaped like automobile engines from those 'cars,' with six silver exhaust pipes protruding from each leg in three columns," Dream noted.

The girl, Tsuyu Asui, is a short girl of a relatively slender build and has notably large hands. Her appearance is rather frog-like; she has a wide mouth and oval-shaped eyes with large, black irises. Her hair is dark sea green and very long, reaching her waist with the ends tied together at the bottom in a large bow. She has two shoulder-length clumps framing her face and shorter bangs between her eyes. "Her Quirk is frog-related. She seems to demonstrate some frog-like mannerisms, such as hopping on all fours instead of running and holding herself in a way that is somewhat connotative of a frog."

After both students demonstrated their speed, Dream saved the results for future use. The same process applies to the other students and tests, but whenever Midoriya comes up to do the test, Dream watches in curiosity and waits to see which bone and muscle he breaks. It was in the last test that Midoriya would finally use the Quirk that All Might gave him. As he held a baseball in his right hand, Midoriya took a deep breath and went to throw the ball. All he had to do was use his Quirk to throw the ball more than 600 meters so as not to come in last place, but his Quirk didn't seem to be working when he threw the ball.

Aizawa's hair stood straight up, the scarf floated around him just like the rings of the planet Jupiter, and his eyes turned to the color red. Seeing the surprised face Midoriya had, Dream couldn't help but smile. "Of course, it wouldn't work. You stop him from using it." He looked in Aizawa's direction. Aizawa walked right up to Midoriya and lectured him about how his Quirk was dangerous and that he had no control over it. The scarf wrapped around Midoriya to pull him right in front of his new Homeroom Teacher, but after a few seconds, he was released from the scarf.

After finally being able to retry and use his Quirk this time, Midoriya went to throw the ball and only used his Quirk on his index finger. Aizawa and the students stared at Midoriya in amazement while Dream examined Midoriya's finger with a straight face. "It was 705.3 meters, and the price you chose was to injure your index finger." Dream stated as he watched the familiar boy from the Slime incident. The boy was about to start an interesting scene as he marched towards Midoriya but was, unfortunately, stopped by Aizawa's scarf, and they continued with the tests.

When the tests were finally done, Class 1-A crowded in front of Aizawa and the board that would show their scores. Midoriya looked to see his placement, and as predicted, Midoriya was placed last. Dream saw Midoriya was full of misery and smiled as he thought of what could have been the punishment for being last on the first day. But his smile soon turned into a line of disappointment as he heard Aizawa say, "It was a lie."

All of the students were relieved to hear the news, especially Midoriya. After stating that the tests were the only thing the students had to worry about today and dismissing his class, Aizawa walked away from his students and went to the side of the P.E. building. He would then find that All Might walked straight toward him. "Aizawa, you liar!"

"Oh, it's you, All Might. So you were watching, I took it?" Aizawa lazily asked.

"You know you were going to expel the student in last place! You already expelled an entire class last year! All Might continued to state to Aizawa, "You kicked out students that you believe have zero potential!' But you saw it too since you didn't expel Young Midoriya."

"'You, too.' huh." Aizawa walked past All Might with a straight face. "So you have his back? I'll tell you this: his chances are above the 'zero' mark. That's all."

As Aizawa continued to state that he could expel any of his students, Dream smiled in amusement at hearing this precious information. That smile soon disappeared when he saw Aizawa look back towards the tree Dream was on, but to his surprise, Aizawa looked away and continued back to the teacher's lounge as if he hadn't seen Dream.
