Chapter 685: The Unsettled Order
Leaving the City Lord's mansion, Gong Ho administered all the tasks he had been commanded to fulfill.
He first went and asked all the training instructors to up the training for one more week before finalizing the list of ready candidates. Once that was done, he could move on to the next phase of training.
Next he went on to check on the inventory and took a note of everything they were missing before ordering some of the soldiers to refill them as soon as possible.
His actions were done discreetly at the start when he only moved a handful of things, but he knew things like these could not be kept under wraps with the resources they needed and had.
And slowly… within a matter of days… a rumor that the beast tide was about to be unleashed upon their city started to take root.
And in just a day, everyone in the city got a whiff of this rumor and started to panic.
"Did you hear?"
"Fuck off! I don't have time for your gossip; I have to run away from this city." The vines of panic moved underneath and over the surface of the city.
Everyone took the rumor differently.
Some took it as well as they could…
While some broke down.
"We are going to die… No, I cannot allow my children to be eaten by those beasts. I will end their sufferings by myself before that could even happen."
A woman started mumbling to herself when she heard about it for the first time and ran towards her home frantically.
Fortunately, guards present in the area were informed about her plan by those who heard it.
"Unhand me! Take your hands off me!! I have to save my kids!!! Please… I beg of you…"
She screamed at the top of her lungs before breaking down in a sobbing mess.
She was not the only one who took their actions to the extreme.
Sadly, a few of them succeed because no one was there to stop them.
Noah watched it all happen with his eyes from the sky; his eyes took in every scream and sob.
His ears heard every plea people made to their relatives or friends in the inner circle to take shelter in their safe haven. Some were taken in while the rest were discarded.
In life-and-death situations, people tend to care about those who are closest to them the most.
A few took advantage of the situation and started taking money for giving people a hiding space from the beasts.
This chaos… everything… It was all happening when the beast tide was not even anywhere close to happening.
People started to stock up on food like they would finish all the stock while running for their lives.
"At times like this I feel being an elf once was not bad after all…" Noah whispered to no one, watching the merciless nature of the humans.
Despite how much he hated elves, he had to admit that the elves were best at being united and helping each other from their races instead of picking on their corpses to survive.
They loved hard, and they hated hard…
But this thought was only fleeting before it disappeared into the space it came from.
The uproar in the city slowly died down under the charge of the soldiers. People asked for answers if the rumors were true, but they got not a single response.
And seeing that the city lord or no one from his mansion was denying these rumors, people started to accept the cold hard truth.
The beast tide was coming whether they liked it or not.
After denial and despair came acceptance.
But the beast tide was not the only thing people were scared of.
As the training of the men in the program grew harder and more difficult to bear, they started to lash out.
Their anger and frustration needed an outlet.
And those who were targeted by them suffered a lot…
One of the days, Noah was walking through the streets of the Aradonia city, helping people who deserved his help.
At first he thought against helping the people, as that would not change anything, but in the end his old heart got the better of him.
Just after Noah helped a family deal with a masked man trying to break into their house to assault the woman living there and left the area, he came across another crime being committed in the middle of the road.
This time it was one of the few people he had encountered a few times in the city.
"Help!" A woman trotted through the street, her clothes torn from different places and stained in blood from the wounds all over her body.
Her screams echoed through the empty street, and even though there were no guards in sight and no one stepped out of their houses to help, she did not give up.
Despite her injuries, she ran as if her life depended on her.
Just a single glance at her swollen blue face, Noah recognized this woman. She was the same woman he had encountered being slapped by her husband.
She was running towards Noah, but she failed to notice him as she was too busy to look behind, afraid the person who was pursuing her would catch up to her.
"Shut up, woman! How dare you refuse my orders? I am your husband."
Noah looked past the woman, and he saw the said husband running behind her, holding his arm with an enraged and pained look on his face.
There was a bite mark on his arm; a chunk of his arm was missing.
"No one will help you, bitch!" He bellowed when he noticed Noah in an attempt to make the man back off and make it clear that it was a family matter, "I am your husband, and no one can interfere in our matters."
But Noah stood there with a cold look on his face and no intentions of moving away from his spot.
Thud!
By the time the woman realized that there was someone in her way, she was too close to avoid him and ended up colliding with him.
