Chapter 689: The Beast Tide.
Boom!
The tremor rolled through the ground like distant thunder, shaking the very foundations of the city walls. The guards patrolling the city gates, where no one but the guards was allowed, tensed.
The tremors ran through the ground and the giant wall they were standing on, coursing through their bodies. They could see dust loosening from the gaps between the bricks, but at the eastern city gate, where the city guards stood, eyes widened and grips tightened; they saw something more.
From beyond the tree line, a sea of sand dust surged forth; the wind howled and blew the dust even farther. Then… they all appeared, Rank 1 spirit beasts, dozens upon dozens, all snarling and howling as one.
"Screeech!" The wind blade eagles screeched through the air, the Ironhide Bulls charged from the ground, letting out misty snorts, their tusks gleaming with metallic shine; Nightflame wolves, with skin of black flames, sprinted towards the city with an unnerving speed.
"Aaaoooo— Aahh— ahh!"
And even the Thorntail Ape, the ever-calm beast that liked to stay out of conflict, came swinging out on vines from the forest. Their towering figures surpassed all the beasts as they landed on the ground and started beating their chests. Their war cry reached people hiding in the houses beyond the wall, shaking their very souls.
The guards swallowed hard when they saw the scale beasts charging at them, and each beast radiated a presence just above that of an average human, touching the realm of acquiring qi and storing it in their bodies.
But even then, the mortal guards who did not even have the talent to cultivate saw them as walking death warrants.
And now… they were coming for their city, in a group.
"Shields up! First line, brace! Second line, spears ready!" roared an old, experienced captain, his voice cutting through the panic like an immortal saber cutting through a mortal. "Archers, take your aim— your target is the aerial beasts."
Rows of city guards—men and women in simple leather armor reinforced with metal plates—fell into practiced formation atop the dry earth before the gates. The guards in the front were the soldiers who had already survived a beast tide before, which allowed them to not freeze at the right moment.
They slammed the rectangular shield in the dirt and formed a wall of shields. Behind them, two more lines were ready with their iron spears pointed at the incoming tide.
The ones driving the spears were the new recruits who had been practicing on the unranked beasts.
"Yellow-rank technique—Earth-Shattering Spear Strike! Ready!" Taking the stance, they lowered their waists with practiced ease and shouted in unison.
The raw power of their muscles surged through their lower body and entered the spear from their arms. It wasn't much—most of the guards were still mortals barely touching the realm of inner cultivation from the hard training they had been through.
A faint cry came out of their spears as they moved forward.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The Ironhide bulls hit the line first.
One crashed against a shield, its tusks gouging deep, but the guard behind only slid back a little and held on tightly.
A spear from behind thrust forward, piercing the boar's throat and pinning it to the ground. Blood sprayed over the formation, but the line did not break.
"Earth-Shattering Spear! Hah!"
With a collective roar, the second line of guards stabbed forward in unison.
This time their spears, glowing with a faint yellow hue, struck the wolves in the head before they could even touch the shields.
Their carcasses were lifted off their feet and flung back into the fray of alive beasts.
Despite how good their start was, the tide did not slow down. Their numbers appeared to be endless, and the soldiers only had limited stamina.
More beasts poured in.
And one of the Nightflame Wolves darted between spears and chewed down at the limbs of the guard while its claw struck his throat. Not even having a chance to scream, the soldiers died.
"Wha—" His death shocked the soldiers around him; the adrenaline in their bodies vanished as a chilling sensation washed over them.
A Thorntail Ape leapt over the shield wall, landing amidst the formation like a hammer falling into glass.
"Hold the line! Hold it—!"
The ape swung its arms like clubs, sending one man flying into the wall, but before it could turn on another, a single spear pierced its left eye, the yellow light of Earth-Shattering Spear bursting from the tip and exploding the creature's skull.
The old captain yanked his spear free from its eyes and spat onto the ground. "Don't let them break through! They're going to stop, so you have no right to stop unless you want to die!"
The day went…
The guards on the front replaced their places when someone was too tired to continue or when someone died.
And the look on the captain's face was not a good one as well. He moved through the battlefield with a different line of experienced guards to slay the guards.
On the side, the bodies of the dead soldiers were being dragged back and piled up like a heap of sacks.
High above in the air, the cultivators from the immortal sects stood on the manor roof, robes fluttering, swords floating behind them.
The young man with his chin in the clouds gave a lazy smile. "Still just Rank 1 beasts. Let the mortals earn their glory."
The girl beside him, arms crossed, glared at him. "And when do Rank 2 spirit beasts come?"
He shrugged. "Then we make our entrance. But if you want, you can always
"…" No reply came back, and the smirk on his face widened.
Bodies continued to fall, and the day came to an end. The east gate managed to hold on against the tide for the first day, and the beast retreated, but no one seemed happy. The deaths on their side were not small as well, and the tide was just starting.
