Chapter 134: Checkmate (2)
The zealots, in a frenzy, began attacking the walls. Some used their fists, while others used their weapons and abilities, but the wall didn't budge.
Any damage they did to the wall was healed instantly.
One of the guys' arms managed to punch through the rotten structure. They rejoiced for a moment, rushing to join him, but stopped when the man began screaming.
"Argh! Let go! Let GO!!!"
The man was trying to pull out, but something was pulling him deeper.
Several zealots rushed to the man's aid and tried pulling him out. But something kept pulling the man inside.
With a sickening crunch, they pulled him out. Well… most of him.
The man didn't have an ounce of flesh from his shoulder down. Just the bones. The wall had consumed the flesh to heal itself.
The man collapsed onto the ground, howling in pain, while others stumbled back in horror. No longer wanting to get close to the wall.
"…this wall," someone mumbled. "It's not the same one we were debriefed about."
Those who were rescued had told the elders about everything they saw, from the strange installations to the army of undead. They said they had broken through the corpse wall and escaped.
How come the initiates broke through the walls that zealots couldn't?
Either it wasn't the same wall, or…
"Blaze had let them escape…"
The realization brought misery and fear with it.
Why did Blaze allow them to escape?
So that they could fetch more sacrifices with them.
They were played time and time again! Everything they did or planned to do was because Blaze let it all happen. They thought they were preparing to take him down.
How foolish were they?
In reality, the cultists were mere ants to him. Things he could toy with and discard at any moment.
Those who maintained some sanity stepped back. They had been pushed beyond the limits of fear. In their minds, if they were going to die, they might as well take some undead with them.
However, the only zombie in sight was Breaker.
It was at that point that they realized something. It was all a game.
As long as they defeated the giant zombie, Blaze might let them leave. At least some of them.
Would he let them leave?
No, but in their delusion, they thought he would. It wasn't like they'd ever be able to defeat Breaker.
Boom!
Their thoughts were interrupted when Breaker hit his chest with a fist.
It was a declaration. One sent to June and the others. If they wanted to live, they had to fight him.
They understood him, yet their bodies just wouldn't move, especially when they saw the mauled corpses on the side. How could they fight against someone like Breaker, knowing they'd die?
As for the healers who were bombarding Breaker, they got tired out and collapsed. Only Girl and a couple of others were left standing, but even they were having trouble using their abilities.
They rushed to June's side, where Girl examined Johnny. Unfortunately, there was nothing they could do for him.
Girl shook her head and signed to June.
"Multiple organ failure…" June whispered.
Just one punch had turned Johnny's organ into paste. The words he wanted to tell June died with him. Perhaps it was something important. But there was no point in wondering about it anymore.
"Get in position," June mumbled, closing Johnny's eyes.
Everyone picked up their weapons. It wasn't out of bravery or to show their final stance. They did it because they had nothing else to do.
No will to live. No way to escape.
Just misery.
Misery that they wanted to get out of, and the quickest way to do it was to… die.
So they picked up their weapons, plastered a hopeless smile, and got ready to be slaughtered.
Even June got up, holding her crossbow. Yet, she was the only one in 'position'. The rest were just there.
"We're pathetic, aren't we?"
June had always known she'd die fighting one day. Yet, she had always imagined going out in a blaze of glory.
A death that would be remembered and praised, she'd be hailed like a legend even in death.
Yet the scenario she found herself in was anything but that.
There was no glory. Just pain and pity.
That's what her mouth said, but her fingers told a different story to Girl.
"Listen up," June yelled. "I want you all to die."
No one turned their heads at her words. They were going to die, whether she told them to or not.
June fell back along with Girl while the rest charged at Breaker like madmen.
Instead of fighting, the zealots threw themselves at the zombie. Only to get crushed a moment later.
Still, there were too many of them. They kept Breaker distracted while the Enforcers charged their strongest abilities. Their aim wasn't to kill him, but to buy time for June.
The zealots were hopeless, but the enforcers knew June was merely putting up a performance.
She had regained control of her hands, which meant she was ready to show her actual abilities.
After all, her teleportation was a gift from the elders, not her true ability. The gift that every Enforcer receives upon indoctrination into the higher ranks.
Meanwhile, behind them, June was signing to Girl, explaining her plan. Only when Girl nodded, did she pick up her crossbow.
"On my mark," she said, aiming for Breaker.
Her hands shook once again, but not because of fear.
It was the power she was about to unleash. Sparks flew from her crossbow as a strange energy surrounded the arrow. Girl was surprised, but kept her composure as the arrow began to glow like molten iron.
"Now!" she yelled.
Girl put all her energy into the arrow's tip as it flew towards Breaker's head. Simultaneously, the enforcers bombarded Breaker with their abilities.
Breaker was so engrossed in crushing the zealots that he didn't notice the arrow until it was too late.
The arrow turned into a beam of light, merging with Girl's ability. Breaker crossed his arms in front of his chest while ducking. It was the best defense he could pull.
Sadly, it wasn't enough.
The enforcer's abilities hit him first, cracking the chitin plates just in time for the arrow to collide.
The trusty chitin was great for defense against physical attacks. However, the flaming hot beam melted through what remained of the plates, giving a clear shot for Girl's eradication energy to hit Breaker.
"ARGH!"
Breaker roared as the arrow pierced through his chest.
It was over.
The Goliath was slain.
