Chapter 604: Can you come to my room?
"Stop laughing," Qi Yongrui snapped. His temper flared when he saw Long Zhong making fun of him. He turned to look at him through the phone's screen and then said to the mer, "I didn't call you to make fun of me. You know?"
Long Zhong let out another snort of laughter before saying, "Of course you did not, but I just cannot believe that instead of telling the truth like a normal person, you actually told her that you were not jealous? You do realise that you could have told her the truth, right? Maybe that way your relationship with her would have … you know, become a bit better?"
Of course, Qi Yongrui knew that it was a good opportunity for him to take his relationship further with Luo Huian. All he had to do was admit that he was jealous, and maybe that way, Luo Huian would have looked at him more as a husband rather than someone whom she needed to take care of.
Qi Yongrui pursed his lips and then pouted before saying to Long Zhong, who was laughing, "What was I supposed to do? She simply jumped that question at me, and I didn't even think things through." Qi Yongrui had never liked a woman in his life because of the troubles and torment that he went through at the hands of Qi Changpu; he had stayed away from women all his life.
So, when Qi Yongrui heard Luo Huian ask if he was jealous, he backpedalled almost at once. Who would have thought that by doing so, he would simply drop the axe on his foot with his own hands? If he had known that he would miss such a good opportunity, he would have made different choices.
Long Zhong cleared his throat and stopped laughing. Though Qi Yongrui was his friend, he was also his boss. It was never a good thing to laugh at one's boss. He pursed his lips and then said, "Alright, there is no need for you to be so upset. Since you have already lost it, then you might as well let go of what has already happened." He then pursed his lips and asked, "Did you say that Huian brought Doctor Tan?"
"That's right."
"Hmmm."
"What's the matter?" Qi Yongrui straightened up in his wheelchair and looked at Long Zhong, who was staring at him with a pondering look on his face.
"I don't think you know much about Doctor Tan. I heard from others that he usually doesn't take on any cases that are related to children. He had never once taken a case involving children. It's a surprise that Luo Huian could bring that mer to treat Nian Zhi… Are you sure that there are no dirty dealings involved between the two of them?"
"What do you mean to say?" Qi Yongrui asked with a frown settled on his face.
Long Zhong shrugged casually. A bit too casually. "I don't mean anything. My cousin, who, by the way, heard this from his wife, who heard it from her sister-in-law, who heard it from her neighbour—Doctor Tan is a big fat pervert."
"Pervert?" Qi Yongrui echoed. For a second, he was certain that there was something wrong with his hearing, because how in the world could a doctor be accused of something so shameful?
"That's right. I don't know how it happened, but a few years ago, Doctor Tan was accused of peeping at a female doctor. That was how his hospital fired him, but the thing is, he was too famous for his skills. Thus, even though his name was dragged through the mud, he was still held in reverence."
Long Zhong frowned and continued as he sipped on his green tea. "You should be careful with that mer. Though I admit that Luo Huian is doing something good, you cannot be any more careful. What if that mer jumps onto your wife when you are not paying attention? The last thing you need is to lose your wife to a mer who is older than you. What face will you show to others if it's proven that you lost your wife to a mer older than ten years? You will be embarrassed to death!"
"So make sure that you keep your wife under your command. If she ends up falling for that mer, then you are screwed."

"Miss Luo, I would like it if you roasted my beef for a bit longer," said Doctor Tan as he picked up his medium-done beef ribs and frowned. He didn't like ribs that were only half done and liked them better when they were well done.
"Got it." Luo Huian frowned but didn't say anything as she picked up a large chunk of beef and placed it on the BBQ plate.
The three mers turned to look at Doctor Tan, who raised a brow and said to them, "What's the matter?"
"Nothing," Fan Meilin smiled. But his smile was rather fake. He then said to Doctor Tan, "I just think that you are quite picky when it comes to what you put in your mouth."
Doctor Tan smiled. He watched Luo Huian, who walked over to the small picnic table and then served them their meal; of course she also handed him his well-done steak. Doctor Tan's gaze turned a bit appreciative as he turned to look at Fan Meilin before saying to him, "You are right. I am rather picky when it comes to putting something in my mouth."
As he spoke, he glanced at Luo Huian suggestively, which made the three mers clench their chopsticks in their hands. If not for the fact that the mer was still important to them, they would have stabbed him to death. How dare he flirt with their wife right in front of them?
"Doctor Tan", sensing the change at the table, Ye Shun smiled at the mer. He said to him, "First of all, I would like to thank you for taking this case under your care. With you taking care of Nian Zhi, I am sure that she will get better very soon." He turned to look at Nian Zhi and said to her, "Say thank you to Doctor Tan."
Nian Zhi eyed the mer who looked suspicious, but she still bowed her head and said to the old mer, "Thank you for taking care of me."
"There is no need for you to thank me," Doctor Tan said, taking a sip of his beer and waving his hand. He said to Nian Zhi, "If you want to thank someone, then you need to thank Miss Luo; she is the only one who convinced me to come and take a look at your injury."
"Then Doctor Tan," though suspicious of the intentions of the mer, Qi Yongrui still asked him, "Can you tell me when the grafting can be done?"
Doctor Tan turned to look at Qi Yongrui and then glanced at the little girl who was sitting next to him. He said to Qi Yongrui, "Grafting is a simple process, but what makes it difficult is the beginning. For the grafting to happen, I need a sample that matches hers. Only then can I perform the surgery."
He took another swig of his beer before continuing, "As for her tendons, that will need at least three surgeries. The damage is too severe. It cannot be healed in just a matter of one surgery. Plus, there is always a chance that she might never be able to regain the same mobility as in the past, but we will try our best, won't we, Doctor Si?"
Doctor Si raised his head and looked at the mer beside him. He turned to look at Doctor Tan and questioned with a slight raise of his brows.
"Huh?" Doctor Si raised his head from the barbecued meat that he was eating. When he saw that everyone was looking at him, he cleared his throat and said to the mers, "You are right. We will try our best to help her, but it will be better if we all keep a very open mind. That way, neither of us will be disappointed later on. As doctors, we will try our best; we always do, but we cannot be perfect. And that is where I hope you will keep that in mind."
Qi Yongrui nodded. He turned to look at Doctor Tan, who was still looking at Luo Huian, and his heart clenched. Even though he knew that Luo Huian was not someone who would fall in love with anyone easily—something about Doctor Tan scared him. There was this stiffness at the back of his throat that made his spine stiffen even more.
He took his gaze away, but he couldn't let go of the nervousness.
The BBQ night, which was supposed to be filled with fun, was filled with tension, all due to the presence of a mer who didn't seem to be aware of it, or maybe he was aware of it but couldn't care less about it.
"Miss Luo, can you come to my room?"
