Chapter 449: Chapter 450: Ragnarok
The fire giant Surtr, wielding the Sword of Victory, set all of Asgard ablaze.
Naturally, the gods could not stand idly by and came forth to battle, but Surtr, bolstered by numerous buffs, clad in terrifying cursed flames, and armed with the divine artifact, the Sword of Victory, seemed unstoppable at first.
Thor was thrown back, the war god Tyr had an arm severed, and even Odin was pressed into a defensive position, narrowly avoiding decapitation by the Sword of Victory multiple times.
Surtr wreaked havoc, focusing his main efforts on Odin, striking him fiercely and inflicting numerous wounds. The chief god was in grave danger.
Under such dire circumstances, Odin could no longer hide his extraordinary powers. In his rage, his hair and beard turned blazing white, lightning flashed in his lone eye, and his spear Gungnir wrapped in thunder, pierced through Surtr, creating gaping holes with each strike.
Hades, watching from afar, exclaimed with joy, "That's Zeus's power; he is here!"
While gods can take on the forms of other gods, it is not without cost. Just as Surtr required half of Apollo's soul for his creation, Zeus's incarnation as Odin also occupied a significant portion of his power. If this avatar were defeated here, Zeus would not be invincible.
"Apollo is going to win," Loki suddenly declared.
Even as the thunder repeatedly pierced the fire giant, draining Surtr's divine energy, it could not inflict significant damage. However, every swing of Surtr's flame-wrapped Sword of Victory truly wounded Odin.
After several assaults, Odin was heavily injured and on the brink of defeat.
Because of the curse, those wounds could not heal, and if the sword were to decapitate him, even Odin would undoubtedly perish.
"An immortal body," Loki noted.
Both the god of light, Baldr, and Siegfried, who had bathed in Fafnir's blood, were near-immortal, their only vulnerabilities being mistletoe and a small unexposed area on their backs.
But now, transformed into the fire giant, Apollo had no such obvious weaknesses.
He was nearly unkillable.
"The Ring of the Nibelungen remains within that fire," Loki reminded. "It is the core of the curse and the core of Surtr's being. Possessing that ring, the moment Odin is killed, Apollo can seize his power. Then, no god could stand against him."
"That remains to be seen," Hades said with a sardonic smile.
As Hades spoke, Odin once again hurled his spear, piercing Surtr's head. However, the giant seemed unaffected and continued his assault, his Sword of Victory thrusting directly toward Odin's chest.
Just as Odin was about to dodge, the sun goddess Sól suddenly rushed forward, embracing Odin.
"My dear father, stop hiding," Sól said with a radiant smile. "Accept your fate here."
With her words, Surtr's sword pierced through Odin's chest, skewering Sól as well.
"You…" Odin glared, realization dawning on him about who he was truly fighting.
"Rest now, father," Surtr prepared to lift his sword to cleave Odin in two.
However, at that moment, Surtr's brow furrowed as he felt a sharp pain in his body. The cursed flames that covered his back extinguished, replaced by a dark, leaf-shaped patch.
Suddenly, a branch emerged from the leaf shape, twisting wildly and rapidly growing hundreds of tendrils, forming a thicket that completely covered Surtr's back.
Mistletoe.
The soft branches rooted deeply into Surtr's back, swelling and spreading under his skin, piercing out through his impervious skin like sharp arrows.
"Aaah…" Surtr screamed in agony.
From afar, Hades chuckled lowly, "Did you really think I'd revive you without precautions?"
Surtr's affliction was immediately noticed by Odin. Although unclear on what was happening, he seized the moment, kicking out fiercely to remove the sword from his body. Fighting through extreme weakness, he turned and with a thunderous punch, smashed the dazed Sól.
Then, he called for Gungnir, which flew towards him but did not return to his hand. Instead, it precisely stabbed into the dark leaf-shaped patch on Surtr's back, aiming for his heart.
"Clang!" The spear's tip struck something hard.
An immense light burst from Surtr's heart, illuminating all of Asgard in a blinding white.
At the center of the heart, an object revealed its form.
It was a ring.
The Ring of the Nibelungen.
Immense magical power was absorbed and then emitted as endless cursed flames.
This was the heart of the curse.
For a moment, Odin hesitated, but then he clenched his fist decisively.
"Boom!"
Gungnir split the Ring of the Nibelungen in two, shooting out from within Surtr's abdomen.
In an instant, a massive fireball erupted from the broken ring, Surtr's body swelling momentarily before exploding into a sun-like blaze.
The shockwave sent the gods flying back, and flames spread across Asgard, igniting everything.
At the center of the flames, the Ring of the Nibelungen melted back into a pool of gold. It seemed impervious to the flames and other materials, falling straight to the ground, toward the courtyard, and eventually returning to the depths of the Rhine River, becoming a fleeting glint of light, vanishing from sight.
As the fire giant perished and the gods' nerves began to relax, dark clouds rolled in from the horizon. An endless darkness loomed, and from within the thick mists, countless dark warships of the underworld sailed into Asgard.
Standing on the foremost dark warship was a tall woman in a black robe, half of her appearing as a youthful maiden while the other half resembled a corpse.
This was another of Hades' avatars, named Hel by Loki.
As soon as Hel appeared, Odin braced for battle, sensing a power in the newcomer not inferior to his own at full strength. Immediately, he threw Gungnir, which faithfully pierced Hel's heart.
However, that half-corpse side had already decayed, and the spear did not inflict the fatal blow Hel had anticipated. Instead, she grasped the spear shaft, preventing it from returning to Odin.
Just then, a massive wolf appeared from the other side of the horizon, quickly reaching Odin's rear and biting off half of his body in a flash.
Watching Odin's torso thump to the ground, Hades could no longer contain himself and burst out laughing uproariously.
He paid no further attention to Loki beside him and transformed into a black cloud, descending at the forefront of the underworld army.
"Odin is dead, gods of the underworld, follow me to annihilate this place, level Asgard!"
He had no intention of stopping after killing Odin. As the lord of the underworld, all the deceased were under his domain. By slaying all the gods here, he would command the entire Aesir as his minions.
With Zeus's power greatly diminished, Hades had nothing to fear.
With a wave of his hand, countless monsters emerged from the abyss behind him, rushing toward Asgard.
Fire, dark clouds, smoke, and omnipresent death and destruction engulfed the entire realm of the Aesir gods. Hades breathed in deeply, savoring the sweet taste of ruin, his heart swelling with triumph.
"I am Death! I am Destruction! I am Hell! I am the End! I, am your Twilight!"
