Chapter 346: Scream
A massive werewolf let out a terrifying roar as it leaped down from above, pouncing toward the woman who had fallen on the street.
The woman screamed in terror, but her legs were too weak to get up. The werewolf's sharp claws swiped directly at her delicate face.
At the last possible moment, a huge figure charged in like a runaway bull and sent the werewolf flying with a single punch!
The woman stared blankly at the figure standing in front of her, her eyes were wide, her breath was rapid, and her lips were trembling as she struggled to speak.
"Run! Rosmerta, run!"
Hagrid roared.
It was as if Rosmerta had suddenly woken from a nightmare—she snapped back to reality, scrambled to her feet, lifted her skirt, and ran.
"Here! Over here!"
From the nearby Honeydukes shop, the shop owner, Ambrosius Flume, held the door half open, stretched out his arm and waved frantically at Rosmerta.
Rosmerta dashed over, and Flume grabbed her arm and pulled her inside before immediately locking the door.
Rosmerta collapsed onto the floor and gasped for breath, still shaken. A pair of cold hands helped her up. Looking up, she saw that it was Flume's wife.
She was trembling with fear but still handed Rosmerta a piece of chocolate, and comforted her, "It's okay, you're safe now…"
Inside the shop, there were also two visiting wizards who had been in Hogsmeade for sightseeing. When the chaos erupted, they hurried inside as well.
Now, in a panic, they asked, "Why is there a werewolf here? Does Hogsmeade have werewolves?"
—Yes, why is there a werewolf?
That was the very question on the minds of Rosmerta and the Flumes. But there was no time to explain to the outsiders; instead, they pressed anxiously against the window and watched the scene unfold outside.
The werewolf that had been thrown had crashed into several barrels but was already getting back up. Its bloodshot eyes gleamed menacingly, long strands of saliva dripping from its sharp fangs. Fresh blood stained its front claws.
A deep, guttural growl rumbled from its throat as it slowly circled its prey, and its eyes locked onto the man standing in the middle of the street. Its razor-sharp claws scraped the stone pavement, leaving behind long, thin scratch marks.
Hagrid clenched his fists. His right arm bore several bleeding wounds.
But he paid them no mind, he just inhaled deeply and then exhaled. The moment the werewolf lunged at his throat, Hagrid let out a beast-like roar, grabbed the werewolf by the neck, and slammed it into the ground!
The werewolf, however, refused to submit. Though it couldn't bite with its throat constricted, its four limbs lashed out violently, slashing more than a dozen wounds across the half-giant's body in mere moments.
Hagrid let out a pained howl and, on instinct, lifted the werewolf and smashed it back down onto the ground. The werewolf yelped like a kicked puppy, and its tail went limp.
Realizing who the person in front of him was, Hagrid instinctively loosened his grip slightly. In that instant, the werewolf rolled over and broke free from his grasp!
Hagrid immediately clenched his fists, bracing for another attack, but instead, the werewolf leapt onto a nearby rooftop and fled without looking back.
Hagrid was momentarily stunned, but then his expression changed drastically as he realized what was happening. He hurriedly gave chase, shouting, "Stop! You stop right there!"
But the werewolf, now terrified of him, had no intention of stopping. It sprang over the Scrivenshaft's Quill Shop, landed in a narrow alley, and continued fleeing down the street.
…
Two red-haired boys peeked out stealthily from behind a wall. They glanced around and, after making sure no one was nearby, boldly stepped out.
"That's odd—why is the street completely empty?" Fred asked.
"Maybe everyone's asleep?" George guessed casually, then added, "Let's hurry. The Three Broomsticks is definitely still open, and I can't wait to grab a drink."
"And restock on some Burping Candies and Dungbombs…" Fred grinned. "Too bad we have classes tomorrow—otherwise, we wouldn't have to go back tonight."
"Hey, what if we invent a candy that lets us skip class? Something like Burping Candy, but with even worse symptoms, so the professor has no choice but to send us to the infirmary."
"Brilliant idea! That could even turn into a business!"
Fred agreed enthusiastically.
Ever since their streaming mirror started selling like crazy, the Weasley twins had no shortage of money. But their long-standing habit of saving up still made them enjoy hoarding their earnings.
For them, the joy of watching their savings grow was second only to the thrill of a successful prank.
"Aaaaaaaah—!!"
Suddenly, a bloodcurdling scream echoed from nearby, making their scalps tingle.
The twins froze for a second, then immediately jumped back to the wall and pulled out their wands.
"Something's wrong, Fred."
"No wonder the streets are empty—looks like we've stumbled into something big."
Fred licked his lips, a mix of fear and excitement flickering in his eyes. Sticking to the shadows, the twins cautiously crept toward the source of the scream.
A woman in a frilly floral dress came sprinting down the street in a panic. She had kicked off her high heels and was now running barefoot at full speed.
"Madam Puddifoot?" George recognized the woman—she owned a teahouse in the village, a popular spot for couples.
Moments later, another figure came tumbling over like a rolling ball, bumping into a bench before coming to a stop. Despite that, he still held his wand high and shouted, "Come on, you beast!"
"Professor Kettleburn!" George was even more surprised to recognize yet another familiar face.
At the end of the street, a werewolf crashed through the glass windows of Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop, shook its head, and then charged straight at Professor Kettleburn.
Fred and George didn't hesitate. Without exchanging a word, they leaped from their hiding spot—one of them picked up the old professor, who had only half a leg, while the other hurled several Shield Charms at the werewolf.
Thanks to their many practice sessions at the Umbrella House, the Weasley twins had become quite skilled at casting Shield Charms. However, the werewolf was only slowed for two seconds before it started charging forward again.
"Incarcerous!"
Ropes materialized out of thin air, coiling around the werewolf—only to be shredded apart in an instant.
"Locomotor Wibbly!" (Jelly-Legs Jinx)
The werewolf stumbled briefly but quickly regained its balance and resumed the chase.
"Get behind me, kids! Let me handle this beast!"
Professor Kettleburn shouted, waving his only arm.
George paid him no mind and instead hoisted the professor over his shoulder, sprinting away at full speed. Meanwhile, Fred suddenly recalled something Harry had once told him. He pointed his wand at the ground and shouted loudly:
"Glisseo!" (Sliding Spell)
The street instantly turned slippery as ice. The werewolf, already mid-charge, skidded uncontrollably with a loud whoosh, sliding several meters forward.
Seeing this, Professor Kettleburn immediately followed up with another Glisseo, sending the werewolf sliding even farther down the street.
Just then, Hagrid arrived. Seizing the opportunity, he grabbed the werewolf by the tail. The creature let out a strange, high-pitched whimper as its entire body went limp.
With an iron-like grip, Hagrid pressed the werewolf's neck firmly against the ground.
