Harry Potter: Becoming a Study God

Chapter 350: The Attacker: Caryll

The village at night was actually quite quiet. Except for the bustling crowd in the bar, most other places were silent.

Wade, in his peregrine falcon form, perched on a tree branch and watched the graceful Madam Rosmerta deftly navigate between tables with mugs of beer, occasionally exchanging a few words and laughs with the customers.

On the dark wooden tables and chairs, large glasses of beer were placed. The fireplace in the bar burned fiercely, and a Streaming Mirror hung on the wall, adorned with brown vines and irises.

It was unclear what program was playing on the streaming mirror, but the patrons in the bar burst into laughter from time to time. They clinked glasses with their neighbors amidst the intoxicating aroma of alcohol, adding a steaming, lively atmosphere to the chilly night.

Wade's gaze swept over the patrons in the bar and then around its vicinity. Everyone seemed so normal, as if no one harbored any special intentions.

The surrounding trees cast layers of shadows on the street and swayed gently, with the occasional sound of birds.

A dark bird perched not far from Wade, and it occasionally stretched its wings through the dense leaves, causing them to rustle.

Wade frowned, tucked his wings closer and shifted a couple of steps to avoid any insects falling on him.

Before long, Lupin and Hagrid stood up to settle their bill. As Lupin pushed the door open to leave, Hagrid suddenly turned back—

Madam Rosmerta had called out to him, and she smiled and pointed to their previous seats.

Hagrid had left his coat behind.

He gave a good-natured laugh and turned back to retrieve his coat. Lupin, already outside, took a few steps to the side of the bar and frowned slightly as if preoccupied with something.

Wade knew, according to the twins' account, that the incident should occur around this time. He stood alert, stretched his neck and looked around.

He couldn't alter the past that had already happened, but at least he wanted to know who was behind this.

No patrons from the bar took the opportunity to follow them out, and despite the darkness of the nearby shrubs, there was no sign of an assailant lying in wait.

Nearby, the sound of footsteps echoed.

A couple walked over, entwined. Judging by their direction, they must have been on a date at Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop and showed no intention of heading home to sleep. They strolled leisurely, flirting and laughing.

Wade watched them closely, his gaze swept over the woman's wine-red hair, the man's cane, and where they kept their wands.

—Their attire seems normal, their figures are athletic, and their intimate gestures appear natural.

Hagrid had already retrieved his coat and was heading out... He paused, and exchanged a few words with Madam Rosmerta...

The Streaming mirror must have been showing a climactic scene, as many patrons were engrossed and they even forgot to drink their beer.

The couple seemed to have noticed Lupin as well; the man straightened up a bit, while the woman hung on his arm, whispering and laughing.

Suddenly, a burst of uproarious laughter erupted from the bar, causing Wade to glance over momentarily. At that instant, he sensed an unusual disturbance in the air, as if it had been sliced through.

In his avian form, he was particularly sensitive to air currents.

A dark shadow suddenly shot toward Lupin at an incredible speed. Instinctively, Wade wanted to intervene, but as soon as he spread his wings, he forced himself to stop.

Lupin, too, had been distracted by the noise from the bar. He only noticed the attacker, who blended seamlessly with the darkness, when it was almost upon him. However, Lupin's response was utterly foolish—

He didn't even try to dodge. Instead, he merely waved his hand to block it, as if the thing flying toward him was nothing more than an ordinary mosquito.

The shadow seemed to anticipate Lupin's move. Before his arm could fully rise, it deftly twisted around, bypassed the weakly raised limb, and then swiftly flew away.

Lupin looked down in shock.

A syringe was embedded in his body. In an instant, the liquid inside was automatically injected, as fast as if he had been struck by a bullet.

Lupin grabbed the syringe, trying to pull it out, but before he could muster any strength, he let out a pained groan and collapsed to his knees.

"What's wrong with you?"

The couple approached curiously with the man asking a question, but then suddenly noticing something, they quickly backed away.

It was as if a fast-forward button had been pressed. Lupin's head elongated rapidly, his shoulders hunched, and gray, coarse fur sprouted from his skin. His fingers curled into claws, and his ears stretched unnaturally...

Within seconds, a werewolf slowly rose from the ground, with its head hung low as it panted, seemingly in agony.

"Ahhh—"

The woman in the couple let out a terrified scream.

The scream jolted the werewolf awake. It snapped its head up, howled, and without hesitation, lunged forward!

The man immediately pushed his companion aside, drew his wand, and pointed it at Lupin. The clothes on the werewolf's body twisted and tangled around its furry limbs.

The werewolf stumbled, giving the man a chance to grab his partner and flee. Behind them, with a loud crash, Hagrid burst through the bar door and charged out.

"What's going on—"

Before he could finish his sentence, he saw the werewolf standing in the middle of the street. Naturally, he was shocked, but he quickly recognized the werewolf's identity from the torn clothes it wore.

The werewolf roared, tearing the remaining shreds of clothing off its body, and once again charged toward the couple, who had already run some distance away. Hagrid, without a moment to think, shouted and rushed forward.

"Stop! You can't do this! What's wrong with you?"

By now, Wade had taken to the air.

Looking down, he saw Hagrid grappling with Lupin. Patrons inside the bar screamed and fled through the back door, while others mounted broomsticks and shot out through the windows.

The werewolf was flung away by Hagrid, crashing through the bar's window, eliciting another scream from Madam Rosmerta.

Meanwhile, the couple had reached the vicinity of Honeydukes and seemed to have been pulled inside by the shopkeeper.

Wade shifted his gaze.

About a hundred meters below him was the shadowy figure that had attacked Lupin.

The chaos behind didn't prompt the attacker to stop and inspect the scene of its crime; it merely slowed its flight.

Now, under the faint light, Wade finally got a clear look at its form.

—It was a pitch-black bat.

It flapped its featherless wings, flew silently and agilely, swiftly maneuvered around trees and under bridges, and continued its flight even beyond the village.

Wade, naturally faster in flight than a bat, maintained his position high above, keeping a leisurely pace while his eyes remained locked on the tiny, mouse-sized creature below.

Finally, the bat dived into a cave and didn't reemerge. Wade had just landed when he heard a voice—

"Success!"

It sounded like a young boy, lively and excited.

Wade paused, slightly taken aback.

This voice... It sounds familiar.

After a brief moment of recollection, a name, long since faded from memory, surfaced in his mind—

Caryll Johnson.

A troublesome brat who had once been a source of annoyance for Wade. They were only a few months apart in age, but Caryll had been missing for a long time.
