Chapter 576: Chapter 576: Onyxia’s Question
In the grand camp at the Wall of Thoradin, inside Alaric's private tent.
Onyxia had just finished reporting intelligence to Alaric. After listening, he fell into deep thought.
However, the Black Dragon Princess didn't intend to let her master ponder silently.
Regarding this mission, the Horde, the Alliance, and the Kingdom of Alterac, she had many lingering questions buried in her heart, questions she now yearned for Alaric to answer.
"Dearest Master, there's something I've wanted to ask since the moment we discovered those orc tracks," Onyxia's mature and alluring voice sounded in Alaric's ear.
"I've always known how wise you are, but I still can't figure out how you were able to predict their possible appearance with such accuracy in the absence of any supporting intelligence."
Just as Alaric was about to respond, Onyxia added another line.
"Don't brush me off with guesses or deductions. You and I both know that pure speculation wouldn't have yielded such precise coordinates.
The orcs appeared almost exactly in the area you predicted. You must have had other means."
"Ah, my dearest maid," Alaric tilted his head slightly, gazing at Onyxia, "to question your master in such a tone, don't you think that's a bit too much?"
"My apologies, I've overstepped," Onyxia lowered her head with a slight curtsy, her voice dropping into a low purr.
"I'll gladly accept any punishment afterward, even that kind of play is fine. But for now, please, indulge my curiosity."
Though her expression remained poised and composed, as befitting a maid, her words betrayed a strong and unmistakable curiosity.
Alaric paused for a moment in thought before finally speaking.
"Alright then, Onyxia, I'll tell you," he said, seeing the joy on the Black Dragon Princess's face.
"You're my maid. I can trust you completely. But you must never share this with anyone. Understand?"
"As your maid, I can keep any secret of my master's." Onyxia gave a proud pat to her chest, causing a rather distracting bounce.
Alaric, long accustomed to such sights after spending so much time around her, remained expressionless.
He gave a slight nod and calmly continued.
"Then I'll tell you. Even within the Alliance, even among the native Wildhammer dwarves of Hinterlands, this is a secret: on the far side of Darkwhisper Gorge lies Alterac."
"Wha… what?" Even the well-traveled Black Dragon Princess was stunned, her mouth slightly agape. "You… you mean you lured the orcs into Alterac?"
"That's right."
Alaric nodded, showing not the slightest hint of guilt at having led the wolves to the door.
"But why?" Onyxia was thoroughly puzzled.
"Under your strategies, the Horde was already being dismantled before it could pose a real threat to the Alliance. Why suddenly take such a risk?
Forgive me for saying this, but it seems like it only prolongs the war without offering any real gain."
"How would you describe my relationship with the guardian dragons?" Alaric didn't answer her directly. Instead, he tossed out an apparently unrelated question.
"I'd say… it's quite good," Onyxia thought back to what happened at Grim Batol and answered honestly.
"At the very least, I've never seen any mortal closer to the dragon flights than you."
"In truth, I'm even closer to some of the guardians than you realize," Alaric let a hint of the truth slip. "Pretending to be strangers was just a cover to avoid suspicion."
"You're incredible," Onyxia praised. "But what does that have to do with the topic at hand?"
"You still don't get it?" Alaric shook his head. "Let me be more specific. Do you know why I joined the Alliance and personally led troops against the Horde?"
Onyxia looked at him with confusion still on her face.
"Or to put it another way, do you know why I didn't ask the dragon flights to fight the orcs?" he added.
"That's true, why didn't you?" Onyxia suddenly understood. "Given Queen Alexstrasza's hatred for the orcs, she would've gladly helped you wipe them out."
"And if I had done that, I could have solidified my place in the Alliance as a savior.
Combined with my ties to the guardian dragons and my ability to command them… both fame and profit would've been within easy reach, wouldn't they?"
Alaric continued, as if analyzing himself.
"Exactly! That's what makes this all so strange," Onyxia looked at the mage with a puzzled expression. "So why didn't you?"
She seemed to be catching on to why Alaric had brought this up.
His involvement in the conflict between the Alliance and the Horde was not driven by the usual reasons, glory, gain, or simply defending the Alliance's interests.
Those motives may have played a part, but his goals seemed to go much deeper.
And at the root of it all was the true reason behind his elaborate scheme to lure Orgrim into Alterac, even though Orgrim himself had no intention of accepting such a "gift."
Looking at the Black Dragon Princess who now resembled a curious child hunting for secrets, Alaric chuckled.
"So then, are you sure you want to know the answer? This secret buried deep within me?"
"Of course!" Onyxia nodded without hesitation. "Please, tell me."
"There's an old saying," Alaric warned her, "when a woman grows curious about a man, she's not far from falling for him.
And knowing this secret means your fate will be bound to mine, forever. Are you sure you're ready for that?"
"Do you think I still have a choice?" Onyxia whispered. "Since the moment I became your maid, our fates were already intertwined. You're not just my master, you're the mate I've chosen. So yes, tell me your secret."
"Very well. In that case, I won't keep it from you." Alaric smiled warmly at her response and finally gave the answer. "To me, the Horde's emergence is nothing more than a reminder, to the Alliance, and to Azeroth."
He then laid out his vision for the future, his predictions, and his assessment of the Alliance's current situation.
His words plunged Onyxia into deep thought.
For the Black Dragon Princess, the magnitude of his foresight was utterly shocking.
She had never imagined that this young human mage had already thought so far ahead for the sake of Azeroth.
Even her father, Deathwing, whose scheme to bring about the world's destruction loomed over all, was, in Alaric's view, just one more obstacle to be dealt with.
That realization alone revealed the incredible scale of Alaric's ambitions.
"Dearest Father," she thought to herself, "you call yourself the destined destroyer of worlds… but if you knew that, in his eyes, you're nothing more than another 'problem to solve'… what would you think?"
And in that moment, she felt a renewed sense of gratitude for the decision she had once been forced to make.
