Chapter 581: Chapter 581: Janice’s Choice
Seeing that the "hostage" he was using to stay alive had died, the orc swiftly leapt toward the other Barov heir, Alex.
The sudden approach of an orc, especially one who had just killed his brother, made Alex Barov stiffen in fear, clearly uncomfortable. But after a brief pause, he forced a grim, tearful smile onto his face.
"Well… well then, you've seen the strength of the Horde, haven't you? They have the power to break through our castle and destroy us from within…
The only reason they haven't done so is because they're giving House Barov a chance.
The only person standing in the way of our family taking the right path is now dead. We should surrender to the powerful Horde without hesitation!"
As soon as Alex finished speaking, his mother, Janice, sharply refuted him.
"You dare speak of surrender after murdering my child? Dream on! House Barov will never submit to a murderer!"
"But House Barov must follow my orders!" Alex cried out anxiously. "With Weldon dead, I am the only remaining heir. That makes me the rightful head of House Barov!"
As he spoke, he glanced around at the servants and guards and commanded loudly:
"I now order all members of House Barov, lay down your weapons, open the gates, and welcome the Horde envoy!"
With Alex and Janice issuing conflicting orders, the servants and guards fell into complete confusion.
Alex wasn't wrong, now that Weldon was dead, he was the sole heir to the Barov title and estate.
Opposing him would be tantamount to defying their future lord, which could only spell trouble for them.
They exchanged uncertain glances. Some held their ground, while others slowly lowered their weapons.
This outcome brought a flicker of relief to Alex's face.
But the very next moment, Janice's words made his expression twist again in anger and dread.
"You think… that a traitor who murdered his own brother can inherit everything of House Barov?
I will never allow this family to fall into the hands of a depraved son who abandoned kinship for power!
Did you think I wouldn't figure it out?
The hall was protected with anti-invisibility magic I personally cast, no one could have hidden and assassinated Weldon under my watch… unless the spell was disabled.
And the only person other than me with the authority to do that, was you."
She looked at Alex with cold hatred in her eyes, as if she were staring at a stranger.
"I've always known you brothers fought constantly over power, but I thought you still had boundaries… some lines you wouldn't cross.
But now I see how wrong I was, completely wrong. For power, you discarded all brotherly affection.
You betrayed your kin, your family, even your race, and colluded with the orcs to murder your own brother.
Do you really think I didn't know you secretly contacted the orcs last night? Do you think I didn't know you were the one who smuggled the assassin into the castle?
You… have disappointed me beyond words."
"I… disappointed you?" Her accusations didn't spark remorse in Alex, in fact, he boldly tried to justify himself.
"Everything I did was to make House Barov stronger, to prevent its destruction and put it back on the right path!
Removing a few obstacles by other means is the right thing to do! Father did the same back in his day.
If he were here, he would've made the same choice I did. He would've joined the Horde too!"
His shameless words brought tears to Janice's eyes.
"Father, father, father… Why do you always have to follow that damned man's example in this?"
Listening to his mother's grief, Alex only sneered coldly.
"You've never cared about us. You've always been obsessed with your magic, lamenting how House Barov gave up its ties to Dalaran.
The only one you ever really liked was Elucia, because she had talent for magic."
"I…"
Alex's words nearly left Janice speechless. But she quickly regained her composure.
"Even so, that gives you no right to abandon all humanity!" Her tone was now icy. "From this moment on, you are no longer part of House Barov.
Go and join the Horde you worship so much. Go follow those orcs you idolize. House Barov will remain with the Alliance. You and the Horde, will never succeed!"
Janice's firm declaration reignited the loyalty in the hearts of the hesitant servants and guards. One by one, they stepped back to her side. Not a single one chose to follow Alex.
If they could help it, who would want to become a slave to another race, especially one they despised?
The situation flipped instantly. Without support, Alex's so-called inheritance and claim to House Barov became nothing but empty words.
After all, he couldn't manage the family alone. Without people to carry out his will, he was powerless.
Furious, Alex erupted.
"Damn it! Damn it!" he roared, now calling his mother by name in rage. "Janice! You bitch! You think you can strip me of my inheritance? You have no right!"
"No! She does have that right!"
Suddenly, a young male voice rang out in the hall, cutting Alex off.
"Who?! Who said that?" Alex looked around in alarm. "Who are you to say that?"
The orc beside him also tightened his grip on his blade, instantly on guard.
"Because I am the Alliance envoy, and the supreme commander of the Alterac battlefield."
A young mage in ornate robes appeared in the center of the hall, a staff in hand. Standing beside him was a black-haired maid dressed in gothic-style attire.
This strange pair immediately drew every eye in the room.
"You… who are you really?"
Words like Alliance, envoy, and commander made Alex falter, but upon seeing the youth's face and the maid beside him, he instinctively dismissed them.
"Probably some noble's pampered son," he thought.
But that thought shattered the moment Janice spoke, plunging Alex into sheer panic.
"It's… it's Sandor! Archmage Sandor! You've come!"
Her voice was filled with joy and relief.
This was Sandor Maverick, second only to Lothar in the Alliance, young, a mage, and yet virtually undefeated in battle.
Countless Horde warriors had died by his hand. To the Horde, he was a thorn nearly as threatening as Lothar himself.
That this man had come to Alterac, to House Barov, left no room for doubt as to what would follow.
Alex Barov's vision went dark. He nearly fainted on the spot.
