Chapter 582: Chapter 582: The Barov Family
At present, Alaric was already a figure of renown across Azeroth, at least throughout the Eastern Kingdoms.
At the very least, his mere appearance and a single spoken word were enough to plunge Alex Barov into despair.
Even the orc standing beside him looked tense to the extreme, holding his long blade high, his eyes locked onto Alaric as if afraid he might do something terrifying at any moment.
Alaric swept his gaze over Alex and couldn't help but shake his head.
In fact, he and Onyxia had already infiltrated the Barov family's castle.
The Barov family was the very faction Alaric had chosen to be his agent within Alterac Kingdom, the inside force that would expose Alterac's betrayal and act as his first and most important ally from within.
He had his reasons for choosing the Barov family.
Beyond the family's inherent status and influence, it was also due to a certain emotional attachment from his previous life.
In the original timeline, the Barov family also faced Alterac's surrender. However, without Alaric's presence, the Alliance had no edge in the war against the Horde.
Orgrim had found a secret path into Alterac, and thus, the kingdom had surrendered without even fighting the Horde. The Barov family, as a result, suffered no loss.
In that original history, the Barov family simply went with the flow. They didn't clearly align with the Alliance but only began supporting them after the Alliance had already invaded Alterac.
And yet, the Barov family's end was not a good one.
Because of Alterac's betrayal, the kingdom was judged harshly by the Alliance after their victory over the Horde.
The territory was carved up by various nations, and even the Barov family was punished.
King Terenas of Lordaeron stripped them of most of their lands, leaving them only the county of Caer Darrow.
Afterward, the Barovs, who believed themselves deserving of reward for their "support" of the Alliance, were consumed by resentment toward the kingdom of Lordaeron.
Not only had they lost their wealth, but they also bore the scorn of Alterac's former noble class.
Those nobles believed that it was the Barov family's betrayal that had caused Alterac's downfall. Incapable of directing their anger toward Lordaeron, they turned all their hatred onto the weakened Barovs.
Eventually, when the Scourge rose, the Barov family pledged allegiance to the Lich King.
Their castle on the island in Darrowmere Lake became a bastion for training necromancers, Scholomance. (Of course, in the game, Scholomance was a dungeon instance.)
Though not a pivotal instance in terms of story, Scholomance became famous among players, especially for its so-called "Three Beauties of Scholomance," which had captivated Alaric in his previous life.
Two of them were Janice Barov and a grown-up Illucia Barov. The third was the family's private tutor, a high elf priestess named Instructor Malicia.
Alaric's decision to make the Barov family his entry point into Alterac was driven in part by his curiosity to witness these famed beauties in the flesh.
However, due to his intervention, the Barovs' fate had already shifted significantly.
In the original story, the family patriarch, Alexi Barov, did not die in the Second War but lived on until the Scourge outbreak, becoming an undead NPC in the Scholomance instance.
But now, due to Alaric's changes, before Alterac had even surrendered, the county of Caer Darrow was assaulted by orcs, and the unfortunate lord died in battle resisting them. In a way, he maintained his honor and died a worthy death.
As for Janice and Illucia, while they would eventually become undead in the original timeline, that was still a future yet to come.
Wilton and Alex Barov, this pair of brothers, had quarreled over inheritance rights in the original story too, but with their father alive, the conflict never grew too intense.
However, once the Barovs turned to the Scourge and Alexi became undead, the brothers' feud escalated into a deadly rivalry, One sided with the Alliance, the other the Horde. Both hired assassins (players) to try to kill each other.
It seemed that even with Alaric altering history, their fratricidal fate was inevitable.
Alaric now turned his gaze toward the orc.
"Blademaster?" Alaric identified him at a glance. "You're from the Burning Blade clan, aren't you?"
"H-how did you know that?" the orc asked in shock.
"'Wind Walk', that was the name of the technique you just used, wasn't it?" Alaric said nonchalantly.
"Among the orcs, the only ones who can vanish like that are the Blademasters with their 'Wind Walk.'"
Alaric used the orcish language for the first "Wind Walk" and the common tongue of the Alliance for the second.
Hearing this, the Blademaster's face changed drastically.
Within the Horde, the Burning Blade was only a medium-sized clan, known for its shamans who wielded fire magic and for its rare warriors, the Blademasters, a class that bridged the strength of warriors and the stealth of rogues.
However, training as a Blademaster was so difficult that even within the Burning Blade, their numbers never exceeded double digits.
Their rarity meant that Blademasters were far too scarce to become a standard military unit. Orgrim had almost never deployed them in battles against the Alliance.
Yet here was this human, who not only recognized him as a Blademaster at a glance but also understood the very techniques he used.
Such an opponent was terrifying.
"As expected… Warchief was right. You are the Horde's most dangerous enemy."
The Blademaster muttered under his breath, then abruptly seized Alex Barov by the wrist and bolted.
Though still physically powerful, the Blademaster lacked the sheer bulk of a traditional orc warrior. His lean frame gave him extraordinary agility, especially when neglecting defense.
The Barov family's guards didn't even react in time before the Blademaster had already broken through their ranks with Alex in tow and made his escape.
"Pathetic," came a voice from behind Alaric.
It was Onyxia.
The black dragon princess immediately gave chase, conjuring a massive fireball in her palm in the blink of an eye.
With a simple flick of her wrist, she could have sent the fireball crashing into the fleeing Blademaster before he got far.
But she was stopped, by none other than her master, Alaric.
His interruption cost her the perfect opportunity. Even Onyxia couldn't make up for that lost moment.
The Blademaster had already slipped out through the side door of the hall.
