"Professor McGonagall, do you have time to answer a few questions for me?"
As soon as the Transfiguration class ended, David quickly approached Professor McGonagall before she could leave.
He had been struggling with a particular aspect of Transfiguration for some time, and despite his efforts during the summer, he couldn't seem to make a breakthrough. Unlike spells, where the rules and incantations were more structured, Transfiguration required a deeper understanding of magic's essence—something he hadn't fully grasped yet.
Professor McGonagall turned to him, a glint of curiosity in her sharp eyes. She had been keeping an eye on David's progress and was not surprised to see him eager to learn more.
"Of course, Mr. Adrian," she said with a slight smile. "Come with me to my office, and we can discuss your concerns there."
David nodded gratefully and followed her.
McGonagall knew that the questions he had in mind were likely far beyond what a first-year student should be thinking about. Most of his classmates were still struggling to turn their matches into needles, but David was already attempting far more advanced concepts.
For most students, learning the basics of Transfiguration took time and patience. But David was different—he was relentless in his pursuit of knowledge. Volume, really too volume!
A Fierce Rivalry
As David followed McGonagall out of the classroom, Cassandra's sharp gaze was fixed on him.
She clenched her fists slightly.
"I can't believe it," she muttered under her breath.
Not only had David succeeded first in class, but now he was going for extra tutoring?
It was clear that he wasn't satisfied with merely excelling—he wanted to dominate.
"This guy doesn't give anyone else a chance to breathe," she thought, feeling a surge of competitive frustration.
From the moment she had met David, Cassandra had sensed that he was different. While others might procrastinate or struggle with their studies, David was always ahead. He was the kind of person who prepared in advance—he had even bought all his textbooks up to seventh year before coming to Hogwarts!
She gritted her teeth.
"If I don't push myself harder, I'll be left behind."
With that determination, she marched straight to the library.
Meanwhile, on the Gryffindor side, Hermione had also been watching David closely. She looked down at her match, which had turned into iron but hadn't yet become a full needle.
She pursed her lips.
"No," she muttered. "I won't fall behind either."
She stuffed the iron match into her pocket and rushed to the Gryffindor common room. She wouldn't rest until she had fully mastered the spell.
While Cassandra and Hermione were preparing for their own training, the other students had very different priorities. Many were already discussing how to finish their homework—a one-foot-long parchment on Transfiguration Theory, due in the next class.
A Difficult Transformation
Inside McGonagall's office, David pulled out a small button from his pocket.
He placed it on the desk, took a deep breath, and focused.
With a swift flick of his wand, the button began to shimmer and distort—and within moments, a small, delicate beetle appeared where the button once was.
It was an impressive transformation.
The beetle's shell gleamed, its antennae twitched, and every detail seemed perfectly lifelike.
But there was one problem.
It wasn't moving.
McGonagall picked up the tiny creature and examined it carefully.
"This is excellent Transfiguration, Mr. Adrian," she remarked. "In fact, it's better than I was at your age."
David felt a flicker of pride, but he wasn't satisfied.
"I don't understand," he admitted. "I've followed every step in Intermediate Transfiguration, but no matter what I do, the beetle doesn't move."
McGonagall placed the beetle back onto the desk and gave him a thoughtful look.
"It's a matter of perception," she explained. "Right now, when you perform the spell, you're still thinking of the beetle as something you created. But Transfiguration is not merely about giving something a new shape—it's about truly believing in the transformation."
David furrowed his brows.
"What do you mean?"
McGonagall tapped the desk lightly.
"If you only think of it as a button turned into a beetle, then it will remain an imitation of life," she said. "But if, deep in your subconscious, you accept that this is a real, living beetle—it will move."
David pondered this.
Was his own mind limiting him?
It made sense. He had always approached Transfiguration as a logical process—but perhaps it required something more intuitive.
McGonagall continued, "This is something that even many adult wizards struggle with. But you're close, David. Very close."
A Valuable Resource
After their discussion, David reached into his bag and pulled out a thick journal filled with notes.
"This is where I've written all my questions and theories," he explained. "Would you be willing to review it?"
McGonagall raised an eyebrow, intrigued. She opened the journal and flipped through a few pages.
She was impressed.
The notes were incredibly detailed—David had not only compiled information from textbooks, but he had also formed his own hypotheses about the nature of Transfiguration.
"You've done a remarkable job, Mr. Adrian," she said approvingly. "I'll keep this for now and go through it in detail. When I have time, I'll leave notes and explanations where necessary."
David lit up with excitement.
"Thank you, Professor!"
McGonagall smiled. "This will be good for me as well. Some of your ideas are quite novel—I hadn't considered certain perspectives before."
Then she added, "I also recommend that you subscribe to Transfiguration Today. It's a well-regarded publication, and I think you'll find it beneficial."
David nodded eagerly. "I'll look into it."
It was a fantastic opportunity—not only was he getting direct guidance from McGonagall, but he was also being encouraged to explore more advanced studies.
He had only been at Hogwarts for a few days, yet he already felt like he was making real progress.
Determined to Improve
By the time David left McGonagall's office, he was feeling more determined than ever.
Although he hadn't fully mastered Transfiguration yet, he had gained new insights.
With McGonagall's guidance, he was confident he could push past this plateau.
As he walked through the corridors, he thought about his next steps.
First, he needed to refine his mental perception of Transfiguration.
Second, he would subscribe to Transfiguration Today and see what insights he could gain from modern research.
And third—he would keep working, no matter what.
Because if there was one thing David knew for sure, it was this:
He wouldn't stop until he mastered Transfiguration.
And no one—absolutely no one—was going to surpass him.
