Hunter x Hunter: War of the Anime Worlds

Chapter 154: Guarding (II)

"Hunter × Hunter?!"

High above Zaban City, two players astride magic broomsticks surveyed the scene below.

"Good thing I'm a long‑time anime watcher. Otherwise … with such an old series, most people nowadays probably wouldn't recognize it."

The speaker, a man dressed like a medieval European servant, grinned.

"Even though this is only our first placement match, it's running under the Reincarnation Dimension rules. The system should keep things roughly balanced. The fact that only the two of us were sent here already shows that this world can't compare with our home world."

The second man—wild red hair and all—spoke matter‑of‑factly rather than boastfully.

"Definitely. Power tiers in Hunter × Hunter aren't that high, but their combat style is tricky. In my view, the real danger comes from the unknowns …"

"Unknowns?"

The red‑haired man glanced over.

"There's a place called the Dark Continent—full of creatures and forces nobody understands. People say it's practically hell. If we ended up there, we'd be dead meat."

The anime fan chuckled.

The redhead frowned, clearly skeptical.

"I'm not kidding. Picture this: humanity here lives on a tiny bit of land in the middle of a giant lake called Lake Mobius. All the expeditions to the Dark Continent barely reached the eastern shoreline—just the beachhead. Beyond that, human knowledge is blank."

"Yet they still hauled back five great calamities. Take one of them: Zobae Disease, the Undying Plague. It's virus‑like but not a conventional toxin or pathogen, and it's wildly contagious—method of spread unknown. If it broke out in our Diamond Kingdom and we didn't notice immediately, it could wipe out the nation—maybe the whole world."

The red‑haired man's eyelid twitched.

"Add to that: yes, the power ceiling is lower here, but within the Hunter community there are some terrifying individuals. With the strength we have now, we can't take them head‑on. Maybe when we hit Extinction 7 we'll at least be able to protect ourselves—and that's only self‑defense. For now, we lie low."

"Also, we have to watch—"

"Can you stop with the 'watch this, watch that'? You make it sound like this place is lethal."

The redhead cut him off. "From what I've seen so far, it's not that bad."

"That's because you don't understand the setting. Why do you think the Kingdom matched you with me? Because I know most of these anime worlds. Drop me anywhere and I at least grasp the basics of the environment and power system."

Perched on his broom, he observed the scattered fights below. "Sure, this is our first placement match, but the higher‑ups already studied the Reincarnation Dimension rules. Priority number one is still killing storyline characters."

"The Kingdom invested a lot in us. The bosses said we'd better deliver, or we'll have a hard time explaining ourselves when we get back."

"So?" The redhead pursed his lips. "Since you know the world so well, what's the plan?"

"First, we're lucky we landed in Zaban City. I just questioned some locals—and nabbed a Hunter‑Exam candidate. This is the same exam the main cast takes, meaning key story characters are all present."

"You're thinking … first blood?"

Excitement flickered in the redhead's eyes.

"Hard, though. The candidates have already joined the city's rescue efforts—fast response implies enemy players on the Hunter side were ready. And we haven't seen the main cast yet; they're probably hiding. With them on guard, landing a kill won't be easy."

"Can't you get to the point?" The redhead wanted to curse.

"Point is: short‑term it's probably impossible. We should focus on the basic objectives and wait until the battlefield zone lifts. Our natural edge is flight magic—most Nen users can't stay airborne—so we can watch openly without much risk. Still, beware the military. In this world, national power is the real threat. Even the Hunter Association is small fry compared to the states. Technology here isn't futuristic, but it's advanced—and the manga shows only the tip of the iceberg. If the army shows up, we're in trouble."

"Let's clear these small fry first," he finished, smacking his lips. "A bit of Sin Value is better than none. Besides, one of these intruding worlds might meet our invasion criteria … heh‑heh."

With a hum, the broom shot away.

"So long‑winded."

The redhead muttered and followed.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Zaban City's downtown

A three‑person squad strolled through the chaos, blending perfectly with the panicked crowd.

They made no move against civilians—just advanced, hunting their targets.

One of them kept gawking at the cityscape, as if its modern vibe fascinated her.

"Not so different from home, though you can see hints of Earth‑style modernization," the blond girl mused.

"Stay focused. Once the battlefield restriction lifts you'll have plenty of time to sightsee. With the dimension coins we pre‑stocked, we can unlock the hidden quests," the short‑haired middle‑aged man in front reminded her.

"Yeah—don't forget why we're here," added the chubby teammate, munching chips.

"Oh, relax. Every enemy player we've met so far is dead. They were pretty average. First placement match—how tough can the opposition be? We usually steamroll these worlds. Just watch out if this world's official forces step in."

The blond girl pouted.

"A little caution never hurts. A veteran in my guild mentioned Hunter × Hunter: low power levels, sure, but it once ranked top‑ten across the multiverse. That means the hidden resources here are deep enough to exploit."

The middle‑aged man sighed.

"Sorry, never heard that ranking. I don't follow many anime. All I know is our past raids went smoothly."

"Too bad none of us knows Hunter × Hunter well. We'll have to play it by ear."

Just then the man stopped, gazing skyward.

Two black dots streaked across the blue, one pursuing the other.

"Those are …"

The chip‑eater froze. "Magic‑type intruders, like us …"

"Only two of them?"

The leader's tone went sharp; he'd realized something.

"Keep away from those two for now—no need to clash. They're not on our list."

"Understood."
