Chapter 155: Guarding (III)
"A mage?"
Xiang Nan also spotted the two players airborne overhead.
His expression changed.
If they were magic‑users with the power to hover, engaging them would indeed be tricky.
"These two are flying so brazenly—they must be among the stronger intruders."
Standing atop a building, Xiang Nan watched the two black dots moving through the sky. Instead of tailing them, he first headed to another part of the city.
It was a street lined with stalls selling local specialties—
At that moment, Pigeon was fighting several intruders. His Nen could erode a player's will, making it hard to defend against.
Once someone's mind was corroded,
they became a puppet
and turned their weapons on their own comrades.
Ah!
Leaping from a nearby rooftop, Xiang Nan plunged into the fray. Blade flashing, he dispatched the remaining intruders with ghost‑like speed.
"You're here…"
Seeing Xiang Nan, Pigeon let out a breath of relief.
"These bastards' guns are special—they don't fire bullets, more like energy beams." Pigeon growled, stooping to pick up an oddly shaped handgun from the ground.
"Where's Orban?" Xiang Nan asked.
"He went after another squad… over by the school," Pigeon said, pointing.
Xiang Nan set off at once.
He merely wanted to confirm that Pigeon and Orban were unharmed; if they ran into anyone truly troublesome, the two of them might not manage alone. After all, they usually fought solo. Still, for ordinary player squads, Pigeon and Orban were more than enough—both were infamous Hunters, veterans of the Wild Horse Island incident.
A few minutes later Xiang Nan reached Orban's location— a school already heavily damaged.
The campus was a wreck: buildings scorched by fire, bodies strewn across the grounds—civil servants who'd come to contain the chaos, along with teachers and children. The casualties were horrific. Orban, in the midst of battle, stood before a classroom block, frowning, wounds on his body.
"What's the situation?"
A gust announced Xiang Nan's arrival. Orban started, hand instinctively going to his sword; recognizing his comrade, he relaxed slightly.
"Targets are holed up inside," Orban said. "Eight or nine of them... When I arrived, they'd already slaughtered a lot of players. They're strong—wiped out the police in no time. I've killed three; the rest are inside this building. When we fought, a few turned into werewolves, and some seemed afraid of sunlight, always sticking to the shadows. I suspect… vampires."
"Vampires?" Xiang Nan's eyes narrowed.
"Just my guess—I haven't pinned down their source world yet, but they feel cold, ominous. Someone turned wolf, they all favor darkness. The building's enclosed, they outnumber me, so I'm considering—"
"I'll handle it. Go hunt the others."
Before Orban finished, Xiang Nan strode past him and into the building.
"Be careful—their bodies are tough and they seem to heal," Orban warned, then turned to leave.
As defenders, their priority was to eliminate the most dangerous foes quickly, denying other enemies any breathing room. Even if battle‑zone constraints were lifted, they had to keep some squads pinned so they couldn't leave the "stage set." Otherwise, if intruders escaped, future quest lines might be lost.
Thus, every member of Xiang Nan's team had to keep moving.
Weak squads were to be finished swiftly; if they couldn't be beaten head‑on, then sabotaged from the shadows. They needed a broad sense of total intruder numbers and locations—staying in one place too long was not an option.
Shards of broken glass crunched under Xiang Nan's boots. He released En and moved floor by floor, checking each level for hidden enemies.
Along the way he found many mutilated students and adults—their deaths identical, as though drained of blood, twin punctures at the throat.
This squad was vicious, slaughtering locals indiscriminately and making no effort to hide it.
After the Zaban City police responded, they had likely been among the first player teams to wipe out official forces.
"That means… with bodies that strong, ordinary bullets do little," Xiang Nan mused.
The building was deathly quiet, as though everyone were already dead. Apart from his own footsteps, no other sounds.
At last he reached the top floor.
Something was different—every window had been sealed, letting in no sunlight. The corridor lighting was dim. The moment he stepped off the stairs, a shadow lunged from the dark—razor claws aimed to rend him apart.
Before the blow landed, Xiang Nan's scalpel flashed, piercing the werewolf's skull and killing it outright.
He paused, glancing at the corpse: tall, fur‑covered, fanged, eyes feral—a formidable physique.
"Not familiar."
He couldn't place which anime world these traits belonged to. Many dimensions featured werewolves and vampires. He didn't bother to guess further.
He walked on, stopping outside a classroom door.
Gently he slid it open.
In the near‑darkness he saw several players drenched in blood, some sitting, some standing among desks and the lectern. One was feeding; spotting Xiang Nan, he tossed the shriveled corpse aside like garbage.
They weren't surprised. They had been waiting—for Orban, or any foe who dared follow.
Xiang Nan met their eyes impassively, stepped in, and closed the door behind him.
Tap‑tap‑tap…
A player lounging behind a desk, legs crossed, clapped slowly. "Impressive—coming alone to face our squad. You must be confident."
"Are you an intruder? Or a player from the main world? A Hunter from HxH?" another asked, frowning at Xiang Nan's cold gaze.
"Main‑world player? A Nen user? Like that samurai?" someone echoed.
"So… probably a high‑level Hunter."
"…"
"If you're not an intruder, that's perfect," the man with crossed legs said, eyes glowing red. "Our goal is simply to complete this mission—kill the other contenders. We've no direct conflict with the main‑world players. Sure, we've caused some damage here and killed a few civilians, but that was unavoidable, right? Once we finish the basic quest, we'll leave. Good for both of us."
He adjusted his posture, emphasizing, "That samurai killed several of our teammates. We're even. If you insist on fighting, think carefully—we spared him only because the open street cramped our style. But here it's different…"
"Since you've come in, leaving won't be easy."
"Best cooperate with us. Help us eliminate other intruders—you, as a main‑world player, protect your resources and drive out enemies. Win‑win, no?"
He grinned, revealing vampire fangs.
Snap.
Before his words had died away— a large hand seized his hair, lifting his head from his neck.
At some point his throat had been cut clean through, head completely severed.
"You seem mistaken… that samurai and I are not the same kind."
Xiang Nan stood behind the vampire, smiling softly—back‑handedly dissing Orban.
Their captain's head dangled in Xiang Nan's grip, blood gushing from the stump.
The remaining intruders' pupils dilated, a chill seizing their hearts.
What—
What speed was that?!
So fast they hadn't even seen it happen…
