Hunter x Hunter: War of the Anime Worlds

Chapter 156: Guarding (IV)

The four intruders lunged at Xiang Nan, who was standing in the center.

Still holding the severed head, Xiang Nan let it fall—yet before it hit the floor, he himself vanished.

Bang!

Gathering power in his leg, he lashed out with a side kick at the nearest vampire. The terrifying force sent the creature hurtling into the wall as if struck by the front of a locomotive, shattering masonry and spider‑webbing cracks across the surface.

He whirled, caught another vampire's fist, twisted the arm until it snapped, and flung the body away, smashing the classroom's blackboard.

Behind him, a player armed with something like a European rapier thrust forward. The blade was unusually supple, whipping about like a willow branch; its tip was hard to track in the dim light.

But these assailants clearly knew nothing of a Hunter's combat style or Nen. The moment the swordsman entered Xiang Nan's En, every move and trajectory was laid bare. Without even turning, Xiang Nan simply drove his right foot backward—just as quickly as the sneak attacker had arrived, he was sent flying.

All of this took place in the blink of an eye.

Only now did the head Xiang Nan had struck off finally hit the floor.

The fight was already decided.

The last intruder skidded to a halt in front of Xiang Nan. A single gloved finger—held like the barrel of a gun—was pressed to his forehead, freezing him in place.

The vampire's already pale face drained of the last trace of color. Veins bulged, crimson flooded his pupils, and twin fangs protruded, but the predatory look was giving way to panic and dread.

"Not bad," Xiang Nan said softly, fingertip at the vampire's brow. "Even without using any powers, your raw physical attributes are impressive—clearly not the result of training, but of genetics. You're on a level far beyond ordinary humans in this manga world."

Apart from the decapitated one, the other vampires staggered to their feet, equally shaken by the display. Still, they hadn't entirely lost the will to fight.

"Without Nen to bolster me," Xiang Nan mused, glancing at them, "even with the Riot of the Blood my own muscle alone might not deal with these non‑humans so easily. Their vitality and regeneration give them a chance in a drawn‑out battle." Under blows that would leave normal people crippled or dead, these opponents were rising again—the vampire whose neck he had twisted was already regaining use of his arm.

"So they need fatal injuries—something that destroys the brain?"

"At least they're nowhere near the ridiculous level of Alucard from Hellsing. They regenerate, but it's limited; the speed seems tied to how severe the damage is. Their life force must have an upper limit." Xiang Nan analyzed while watching them.

The vampire before him swallowed hard. An instant later veins bulged on the back of his hand as he tried to slap away the finger touching his forehead; his nails lengthened into dagger‑points for a thrust at Xiang Nan's chest. At the same time he gaped wide, saliva spraying, ready to bite.

Bang!

Although Xiang Nan's eyes weren't even on him, every intention and twitch was crystal‑clear. A brutal punch flattened the vampire's torso, bending it nearly ninety degrees; skull and floor shattered together as the body crashed through the classroom's floorboards, leaving a gaping hole. The head burst like a melon, spraying pulp and crimson. The corpse lay limp, another headless body.

Straightening, Xiang Nan shook out his hand. The system chimed to confirm a kill.

"As expected—you have to destroy them completely."

Baring neat white teeth, he smiled at the three remaining vampires poised to pounce.

"…"

The smile sent chills down their spines. They wheeled, bolting for the closed classroom door.

They were fleeing. Far too strong—this player from the main world was a monster beyond them.

Yet from the moment Xiang Nan had set foot in the building, their fate was sealed. In less than thirty seconds the battle was over.

Standing in the darkened room, Xiang Nan inhaled the faint metallic tang, lit a cigarette, picked up the severed head, and walked to the window. He smashed the boards and panes that blocked the light.

The head belonged to the intruders' captain, the first one Xiang Nan had beheaded. At first the neck had bled profusely, but under some internal force the flesh had begun scabbing over, the flow slowing. Two or three minutes had passed since the body and head were separated, yet the man remained alive. Remarkable.

Cigarette between his lips, Xiang Nan dangled the head outside the window, exposing it to sunlight.

"Boss… spare me, please!" the vampire pleaded, voice quavering.

Sunlight did not turn him to ash as legends suggested, but his genetic power seemed suppressed; blood again seeped from the stump.

Ignoring the plea, Xiang Nan narrowed his eyes. "So the sun only weakens you—it can't kill you."

"S… s …s …" The vampire babbled incoherently. "I'll tell you everything—just don't kill me! I can help you eliminate the other intruders. I can reveal all the information about our world. I can help your Hunter world become the ruler of ours. I'll be your mole… recruit players for you, set up story‑character assassinations—I'm valuable, really!"

"Oh? Let's hear it," Xiang Nan said, exhaling smoke with interest.

Elsewhere.

Carrying his skateboard, Killua strolled leisurely down the street. He wasn't interested in rescuing civilians; to him, the crisis in Zaban City was "boring." Rather than saving people, he preferred to find the culprits and kill them. He'd already taken care of a few.

The first‑round exam was merely an evaluation by examiner Satotz based on player performance; heroics weren't mandatory. So Killua followed the sounds of gunfire to the heart of the chaos—outside a government building. Police corpses lay scattered; the firefight had just ended, guns fallen silent.

"Hmm?"

His appearance drew the attention of two intruders who had just wiped out the police squad. They exchanged glances—this white‑haired boy radiated a chilling killing intent.

They had been about to toss their captain's head and leave a message to tidy up the plot of this world before rejoining their comrades. Then this kid showed up.

Killua said nothing, eyes turning icy as he walked toward one of them. The two players reacted at once; whoever he was, the hostility was unmistakable.

Not far behind Killua, Illumi watched silently, not planning to intervene—at least for now.
