I Have a Girlfriend in Marvel

Chapter 82: Iron Man: Forever Batman’s Background Prop

One day and night passed. The next morning, Su Ye and Gwen woke up feeling refreshed, greeting the sunlight of a new day. Everything felt perfect and harmonious, even the air seemed sweet.

The five masks they had prepared weren't even needed.

"Good morning!"

"Good morning!"

Their eyes met, and in that moment, they knew—sometimes, all it takes is a glance to rekindle passion.

By noon, Su Ye ordered takeout from a Chinese restaurant—Buddha Jumps Over the Wall—to replenish his strength and energy, taking a moment to recuperate.

This round was a clash of equals; a battle of titans with the outcome still uncertain.

By evening, they called a truce, and Gwen finally had time to talk to Su Ye about everything that had been going on lately.

"I originally planned to work with Dr. Connors in the lab to create something. But we ran into a problem we couldn't solve, so the whole project stalled."

"That day, I went back to school, to the spot where I used to sit and read, hoping to clear my mind. That's when I accidentally got bitten by a spider."

The place Gwen was talking about was the same spot where Su Ye had first seen her sitting.

It was also where Su Ye had been bitten by the super-spider.

"And I'm pretty sure it's the same spider that bit you!" Gwen said confidently.

Months had passed, and yet that spider was still lurking around, biting people again. The whole thing was bizarre.

"That spider won't bite anyone else, will it?"

Su Ye asked suddenly. People bitten by the same spider shared a unique attraction. If someone else got bitten—a beautiful woman, fine. But what if it was a burly man…?

The thought was unbearable.

Gwen shook her head. "I didn't know before, but it shouldn't happen again."

"Why are you so sure?" Su Ye pressed.

Gwen sighed. "I squashed it right after it bit me and tossed it away. Later, I went back to look for its body, but it was gone. If I'd kept it, maybe it could've helped Dr. Connors' research."

Fair enough. Su Ye nodded. It looked like they'd have to wait and see if another Spider-Man—or woman—would emerge. If not, then there was probably nothing to worry about.

But in Gwen's mind, one person suddenly came to mind—Batman.

When she had been with Batman earlier, Gwen had experienced some discomfort. At the time, she thought it was just a side effect of her spider mutation.

But after meeting Su Ye and their "fierce battle" that lasted hours, she realized that strange sensation she had felt earlier might have been caused by Batman.

Could Batman also be connected to the super-spider somehow…?

Gwen silently planted a seed of doubt in her mind but didn't voice it, fearing it might upset Su Ye.

While the two talked, the outside world was in chaos.

An alien descending via rainbow light from Los Angeles to New York and relentlessly pursuing Iron Man across the U.S.? What kind of grudge was this?

Even more absurd was the fact that the alien actually managed to take Iron Man down. There were pictures to prove it—photos of Iron Man lying face down had already made their way into newspapers and online platforms.

Next to these images were comparison shots of Batman, cape spread wide, gliding heroically through the night.

As the news spread, people learned that, once again, Batman had saved Iron Man—just like during the Hammer Industries expo and the Oracle Arena battle.

Iron Man had fallen, and Batman had ended the fight.

It seemed Iron Man was destined to be nothing more than Batman's background prop.

As for the destroyed buildings and the final explosion, no one had much to say. For the sake of victory, some sacrifices were necessary. All the public needed to remember were the superheroes' shining moments.

What delighted New Yorkers even more was that, reportedly, the first to assist Iron Man last night wasn't Batman—it was Spider-Man.

On the night Iron Man got beaten down once again, Spider-Man and Batman had joined forces!

This naturally became a cause for celebration among Spider-Man and Batman fans, especially the shippers with peculiar interests.

The Spider-Man vs. Batman fan-comic saw overnight updates, selling tens of thousands of copies, treasured by fans like prized relics.

It made Su Ye seriously consider confronting that underground publisher.

"You're profiting off my copyright; it's only fair to share a bit, right? I'm not even trying to take advantage—let's split the profit 50-50. If you disagree, I'll tie you to the Bat-Signal and hang you off a rooftop for public viewing."

Compared to Batman's moment in the spotlight, Thor—the God of Thunder, who should have been the star of this arc—ended up in a miserable state.

Thanks to Zhen Yuan Zhai taking the hammer and Su Ye's Spider-Man interference, Thor's climactic scene—where he lifts Mjolnir in a near-death moment, regains his thunderous power, and smashes the Destroyer—never happened.

In fact, Thor was still being treated as a thief, locked up in a storage room at the Shiranui Dojo.

The Destroyer's arrival raised alarms at S.H.I.E.L.D., but it also piqued their curiosity about this man who flew 4,000 kilometers from Los Angeles while being carried by Iron Man without showing any signs of fatigue.

What intrigued them even more was his clear intent to seek out Mjolnir upon arrival.

From Coulson's experience with extraterrestrials, this guy might look human, but the odds of him being an alien were high—especially given his connection to the hammer that only Zhen Yuan Zhai could lift.

The best way to deal with an alien, of course, was to dissect him. Analyzing his anatomy could reveal differences from humans and possibly lead to discoveries beneficial to mankind.

For example, maybe eating his flesh would grant super strength and invincibility, or drinking his blood could make someone perpetually powerful.

If that turned out to be true, they'd have to lock him up, treat him well, fatten him up, and then harvest him…

However, most of the agents assigned to the Mjolnir case alongside Coulson had just been knocked out by the martial artists. With personnel short and unwilling to entrust this task to anyone else, they temporarily locked Thor in the storage room.

Coulson managed to visit Thor but skipped the cliché interrogation questions like, "Are you a mercenary trained in Pakistan, Chechnya, or Afghanistan?" Instead, he went straight to the point.

"You're not from Earth, are you? Where are you from? What's your purpose here? What's that hammer, and who or what is that armored entity? Why did it chase you from Los Angeles to New York?"

At that moment, Coulson was like a curious child, his mind filled with countless questions.

But Thor, sitting across from him, remained silent, as still as a statue.

From Old Bridge Town to Los Angeles, and then to New York, Thor's anticipation of reuniting with his hammer had been immense. But now, his disappointment was equally profound.

The feeling was worse than confidently going on a date during Valentine's Day, only for the girl to leave right after dinner without even staying for a movie.
