Chapter 298
I have been working on some stuff. From now on, there will be no days without chapters till the end of the novel, that's my promise.
In the grand scheme of things, the strength of these individuals isn't particularly impressive when viewed on a global scale.
At the very least, they are incapable of standing against all the world's mafia.
"Ahem, alright."
Seeing his colleagues' spirits slightly dampened by Morin's disparaging remarks, Kurapika quickly stepped forward to take over the conversation.
"Morin, aside from looking for Baise, is there anything else you came here for?"
"Well, mainly I wanted to see you and check how you're doing." Morin scrutinized Kurapika from head to toe, pausing particularly at his right hand before smiling and saying, "It seems like you've been doing pretty well lately."
Hmm, the chains on his right hand are gone, indicating he has abandoned the abilities developed to combat the Phantom Troupe, replacing them with powers aimed at the V5.
Morin glanced at the bulging area behind Kurapika, which no longer concealed his original wooden swords. It seemed he had replaced his twin swords with similar weapons.
That makes sense, as Kurapika originally wielded twin swords.
Developing Nen abilities and then suddenly switching to chains, driven by his obsession with capturing the Phantom Troupe, would inevitably require an adaptation period and retraining. In hindsight, it wasn't the wisest decision.
However, now facing an even larger adversary like the V5, Kurapika hasn't let hatred blind him.
Instead, the enormity of the target has calmed him, allowing him to develop abilities and weapons more suited to himself. This is undoubtedly a good thing for Kurapika.
"You too."
Hearing this familiar greeting, Kurapika was momentarily transported back to the Hunter Exam days, a warm, reminiscent smile appearing on his face.
Unfortunately, time has passed, and those days are irretrievable, and he is no longer the person he once was.
"Shall we have a chat?"
Kurapika extended an invitation to Morin.
"Let's chat, then?"
Morin looked at Kurapika's outstretched hand, smiled, and nodded in agreement.
Not long after, in the room next door designated for meetings, Kurapika and Morin sat on opposite sides of the table, facing each other.
Aside from the two of them, there was no one else in the room. This was a conversation meant just for them.
"Is that so? You've also encountered Leorio, Gon, and Killua?" Kurapika's face lit up with a wider smile upon hearing news of his old friends from Morin.
"Ever since coming to Yorknew City, I haven't been in touch with them... that's my fault."
"You've been too busy with your own pursuits."
Morin lit a cigar from Kukuroo Mountain, a gift from Maha, and said, "But Gon has found clues left by his father, and the three of them are working hard to raise money for that."
"They're also busy earning money and haven't reached out to you, possibly because they trust you to handle any trouble on your end."
"And judging by the results, that's exactly what happened."
Morin took a puff of the cigar and smiled. "I didn't expect to see you again as the head of a family."
"You're getting closer to your goal now, aren't you?"
"The V5..."
Hearing Morin's words, Kurapika took a deep breath. "You really do know something, Morin. Can you tell me what really happened back then?"
"Of course. When the blame for the Kurta Clan's massacre was pinned on us, I definitely had to do something."
Morin shrugged. "We accept everything, but no one can take anything from us."
"If we did it, we did it. If not, we won't take the blame for it."
"The usual way of doing things in Meteor City..."
Kurapika nodded. "It's certainly a straightforward value system."
"By the way, the diamond you gave to Baise was very much to her liking," he said with a smile.
"For someone you love, no gift is too much in my opinion, because nothing compares to Baise."
Morin's casual tone was filled with affection, and his words were a testament to his deep feelings.
With plenty of money at his disposal, money was just a number to him. He could spend a thousand Gings on anything he wanted without batting an eye.
Yes, the romance of the wealthy is something beyond our understanding. Kurapika had nothing much to say about it, as he didn't have much money and couldn't relate.
"So, Morin..."
---
His eyes suddenly turned serious and heavy. "Can you tell me what really happened back then?! Why did the V5 target our Kurta Clan?!
We lived peacefully in a secluded area, never bothering anyone outside.
Yet, even so, the V5 refused to leave us a piece of land to survive on. Did they really have to exterminate us completely?!"
Kurapika grew more agitated as he spoke, his chest heaving with emotion. This was something he had never been able to understand.
Almost every restless night, Kurapika found himself pondering this question. Why did the Kurta Clan become a target for the V5, leading to such a devastating outcome?!
"I really can't figure out what about our Kurta Clan would be of interest to the V5.
If it's the so-called Scarlet Eyes, one of the world's seven most beautiful sights, the V5 wouldn't deem it worthwhile to send forces to annihilate our entire clan just for our eyes."
At this moment, Kurapika's eyes turned a crimson red. "They already possess many of the world's seven beauties; there's no need to covet our clan's."
"And wiping us out entirely, eradicating us from the source, surely wasn't just for the Scarlet Eyes!!" Kurapika stated firmly, "They must have another motive!!"
Kurapika's analytical ability was indeed impressive. Even when discussing the V5, his mortal enemies, he managed to restrain himself and speak calmly, offering his perspective and a fairly accurate guess at the truth.
Not letting hatred blind him and being able to make sound judgments was something Morin greatly admired.
"You're right. The V5 doesn't care much for the Scarlet Eyes. After all, these so-called world beauties are of no use to them."
Morin's words, though somewhat dismissive of the Scarlet Eyes, still caused Kurapika's heart to race. He straightened up slightly, waiting for Morin's answer.
"For the V5, the only thing they care about is maintaining their ruling interests. In a world where Nen exists, power is the foundation of their rule," Morin explained slowly under Kurapika's serious and eager gaze.
"The V5's pursuit of strength never stops, whether it's more Nen users or more Nen abilities. As long as it can enhance their power, no price is too high."
"So, what truly attracted the V5 to the Kurta Clan wasn't the beautiful Scarlet Eyes, but something that could enhance their strength. In this regard, you should know better than I do."
At this point, Morin paused, watching as Kurapika's expression grew darker and more troubled.
"The reason for enhancing strength…" Kurapika clearly had a realization. "For a nation's power, beyond economic and military might, it's the number of Nen users."
"And what Nen users rely on is nothing but Nen ability. The Kurta Clan's extraordinary aptitude in Nen…"
Kurapika supported his face with one hand, his body trembling. He almost understood why the V5 targeted the Kurta Clan.
"An old saying from my homeland goes: 'A man without sin who holds a treasure is guilty.'"
Morin continued softly, "Even if the V5 doesn't value your Scarlet Eyes, the bloodline that allows for the development of two types of Nen abilities is something they desperately need."
"You knew all along, Morin?" Kurapika asked quietly, his head lowered.
"Naturally. To uncover the truth, I had to determine if your Kurta Clan possessed any extraordinary traits that would interest the V5.
In the Scarlet Eyes state, converting Nen types to Specialist and developing a second Nen ability is a dream for many Nen users."
"It's not just ordinary Nen users who are envious; even the V5 would be very interested. If they could unlock the secret of the Kurta Clan's bloodline to develop a second Nen ability, even with just a ten percent chance, they would take action."
"Even I'm a bit intrigued," Morin chuckled lightly.
Kurapika fell silent once more. Everything Morin said was true, and that's precisely why it pierced Kurapika's heart so deeply.
"So, our bloodline is the true culprit behind our clan's downfall?!" Kurapika murmured, his emotions in turmoil.
"The true culprit? Not quite," Morin shook his head gently. "This is the bloodline bestowed upon you by the heavens, not something you can control. I believe the elders of your Kurta Clan would rather forgo such a bloodline if it meant their descendants could live normal lives under the sun."
"This isn't something you can choose or control; you can only accept it passively. The fault isn't yours."
After Morin finished speaking, Kurapika could no longer hold back. He suddenly stood up and said, "I'm sorry for my rudeness."
With his head lowered, Kurapika's expression was hidden, making it impossible to read his emotions.
However, the fluctuation in his voice revealed his current inner turmoil. He bowed slightly to Morin and then exited through the door.
