Chapter 43: Chapter 43: The Barrow-wights' Attack
"What happened! What happened?!" The huge sound woke everyone in the yurt.
"Stand guard! We have enemies!" Gandalf quickly got up, grabbed his staff, and shouted loudly. The gem at the top of his staff emitted a dazzling white light that illuminated the yurt.
The dwarves also drew their weapons, either daggers, axes, or hammers. Bilbo, suddenly awoken from his sleep, was very flustered. Having never seen such a scene, he quickly imitated the dwarves and drew his own dagger, extremely nervous.
Kael had woken up the moment the magic barrier was attacked. He drew his wand and shouted loudly, "Don't panic, everyone! I have set up a magic barrier outside; the enemies can't get in for now!"
After speaking, he immediately rushed out of the yurt, followed closely by Gandalf and the others.
"It's a wight!" When everyone saw the tall, dark figure not far away, they immediately exclaimed.
And Kael's shock upon seeing the wight was no less than that of the others. He clearly remembered that in his previous knowledge, the expedition team had not encountered a wight here. Why was it different from his memory now? Could it be the butterfly effect of him being a transmigrator?
Seeing the crowd, the wight became even more agitated, turning into a black shadow and rushing towards them again.
"Prepare for battle!" Thorin raised his sword and shouted loudly. The other dwarves also raised their weapons, preparing for a charge.
"Petrificus Totalus!" Without giving the dwarves a chance to act, Kael skillfully cast a Petrificus Totalus on the wight. Then, a dagger shot out from his waist, instantly piercing the wight's head. The dagger, a weapon forged by the last prince of Cardolan to deal with the Witch-king of Angmar, possessed the ability to counter dark forces, so using it against the wight naturally had an immediate effect.
The wight let out an unwilling roar, and a black mist shot up from its body, exploding and dissipating into the sky. Watching the wight fall to the ground and turn into a pile of white bones, the dwarves were silent for a moment, then immediately erupted in cheers. Kael's strength had earned the recognition and respect of the dwarves.
However, Kael's expression remained serious. He waved his hand, signaling for quiet. "Everyone, be careful. The mist has not yet dispersed; there are other wights present!" Upon hearing this, the dwarves instantly fell silent, looking at the increasingly dense mist around them, becoming even more vigilant and alert.
Gandalf frowned as he looked at the mist. He raised the staff in his hand and heavily struck the ground; a powerful force emanated from him, rapidly spreading outwards. Wherever the force reached, the mist retreated, and the mist within a radius of more than ten miles completely dispersed.
As the mist cleared, the things hidden within it were also exposed. However, when everyone saw the exposed wights, they instantly took a sharp breath. The wights were in groups, densely packed, numbering in the hundreds!
Kael's pupils also constricted. So many wights, even more than he saw at the Barrow-downs last time. Was this their entire nest coming out?
The exposed Wight group no longer hid, letting out roars, and frantically rushed towards Kael and the others, moving as fast as lightning. They instantly charged in front of them and heavily struck the magic barrier, creating layers of ripples. Seeing that the Wights had not broken through the magic barrier for a long time, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Kili and Fili, the youngest of the dwarves, even provoked the wights outside the barrier.
But the next moment, the Wights drew their ancient swords, buried with them, and swung them. These ancient swords, imbued with curses and ill omens, hacked at the magic barrier. The Wight-swords possessed the power to break magic, and under the Wights' continuous hacking, cracks appeared in the magic barrier, making it appear precarious.
Just as Kael was about to act, Gandalf stepped forward and patted his shoulder, saying with a smile, "Leave this to me this time; I can't let you do all the work." Kael did not move upon hearing this; he naturally had great trust in Gandalf's strength.
The next second, the magic barrier finally shattered under the attack of the many wights. Gandalf raised his staff high, striking the ground heavily, his voice like thunder: "Evil, retreat!" A holy white magical halo exploded like a tsunami; groups of Wights roared and lunged, but their sharp claws had not even touched the edge of his cloak before they were all sent flying by the erupting power of lightning, instantly losing their resistance. Kael's eyes were filled with shock; when would he be able to possess such power?
But just as he thought the battle would soon end, a shadow of death suddenly enveloped everyone. Evil, dark speech echoed around them, and everyone felt a bone-chilling coldness. Their blood seemed to freeze, their hearts felt as if squeezed by a cold hand, instantly filled with fear and despair, their minds and consciousness impacted by the darkness, gradually becoming insane.
A tall, crown-wearing wight emerged from the darkness, his eyes burning with eerie light, exuding a terrifying aura, as if a shadow of death had walked out of darkness itself. Just when everyone thought they would sink into this despair and madness, a power full of warmth, courage, and hope enveloped them, dispelling the fear and coldness in their hearts. Immediately after, countless lively and agile golden musical notes appeared, circling around everyone. The music played by the notes had a strong infectious power, making everyone involuntarily joyful and resisting the negative emotional impact brought by the Wight. Everyone looked at Kael and found that these dancing musical notes were flying out of his wand.
But at this moment, Kael looked at the wight appearing in the distance as if facing a formidable enemy; he remembered this feeling, and it was even stronger than the last time it gave him this feeling. He immediately shouted to Gandalf: "Gandalf, he is the Witch-king of Angmar! He is possessing the wight!"
Gandalf's expression also became solemn upon hearing this. He raised his wand towards the wight, and his aged and majestic voice, wrapped in wind and thunder, boomed: "Nazgûl, Dark Spirit, this is not your territory! Go back to your spirit world!"
The Witch-king of Angmar, possessing the wight, paused. But then he let out a chilling, harsh dark ancient language like hell: "Wizard, you cannot stop me."
Gandalf, enraged, shot a lightning bolt from his staff, striking the wight. The Wight was blasted into dust by the lightning. But the next second, a fallen wight stood up, opened its eyes burning with flames, and mockingly laughed: "You cannot kill me, Wizard. I am thousands of miles away at this moment. What can you do to me?"
Gandalf said nothing, directly blasting the wight possessed by the Witch-king of Angmar with another lightning bolt. But the result was no surprise; the Witch-king of Angmar appeared again, possessing another wight, and this time he turned his dark gaze towards Kael, revealing a sinister smile and a look of certainty, "Young wizard, I told you I would remember you. You have been marked by me. You can never escape, and you will eventually fall into darkness, becoming my spoils!"
Facing the Witch-king of Angmar's certain gaze, Kael's heart tightened. He was marked? When did this happen? Why didn't he notice?
Kael felt uncomfortable all over. He looked at the Witch-king of Angmar's smug and unbridled appearance, feeling annoyed. He wants to treat him as spoils? Does this mean he's sure of him?
Be careful not to chip your teeth! Kael snorted coldly. He waved his hand, and a small wooden box flew out from his luggage into his hand. He opened it and took out the item wrapped in black cloth inside. Then he immediately shouted to Gandalf: "Gandalf, don't destroy his body yet, first make him lose his resistance!"
