Chapter 44: Chapter 44: Casting a Curse
Gandalf didn't know what Kael was going to do, but he chose to trust him. He swung his staff heavily, knocking down the wight possessed by the Witch-king of Angmar.
"Expelliarmus!" Kael's spell followed closely.
The spell hit the wight, knocking off a brooch it wore, which quickly flew to Kael's front. The brooch was tainted with the Witch-king of Angmar's dark magic, filled with ill omens and curses, which was exactly what Kael wanted. He opened the black cloth, revealing the voodoo doll made from Mandrake. He placed the brooch on the doll. The aura carried by the brooch instantly merged with the voodoo doll, and the doll's appearance changed, looking somewhat like the wight possessed by the Witch-king of Angmar.
The Witch-king of Angmar, possessing the wight, felt a faint connection between the doll in Kael's hand and himself. This feeling made him uneasy, and he was about to immediately leave the wight's body.
But the next second, a soul-piercing pain emanated from him, making him unable to help but let out a sharp, ear-splitting scream.
Kael was seen holding a dagger made of a poisonous snake's tooth, fiercely stabbing the voodoo doll's heart. The voodoo doll seemed to come alive, also emitting a piercing shriek and showing a painful, distorted expression.
Everyone was stunned by this scene. Seeing Kael expressionlessly stabbing the doll and the wight's pained expression, the dwarves couldn't help but swallow, looking at him with awe.
When casting a curse, one needs to concentrate fully, with the greatest malice, and supported by vast magic.
Kael's movements didn't stop. After stabbing the heart with the poison-fanged dagger, he moved to the voodoo doll's glabella and stabbed fiercely again.
"Bang!" What Kael didn't expect was that after letting out a tragic scream, the voodoo doll suddenly disintegrated in his hand, turning into a pile of ashes.
Kael was caught off guard by this sudden change. But the final result didn't make his efforts in vain.
The wight possessed by the Witch-king of Angmar let out unwilling and painful roars, then instantly exploded violently, turning into flying ash. The other wights also suddenly seemed to lose their support, their evil power dissipating, and they all fell to the ground, turning into white bones.
Everyone instantly fell silent, looking at Kael with awe.
However, Kael at this moment was not in the mood to pay attention to them. He looked at the voodoo doll that had turned to ash in his hand, feeling a pang of heartache. The voodoo doll, which he had spent so much effort to make, was completely ruined after only being used to curse the Witch-king of Angmar once. This truly made his heart ache!
After all, voodoo dolls were not single-use consumables, but he hadn't expected the Witch-king of Angmar to be so strong that cursing him once would ruin a voodoo doll.
Gandalf walked over. He looked at the ashes in Kael's hand, feeling the lingering curse and dark magic aura on them, and looked at Kael with some concern. "Kael, please don't mind an old man's rambling, but be careful not to immerse yourself too much in this power, as it will make you very susceptible to becoming prey of darkness!"
"I understand, thank you for your reminder." Kael nodded seriously.
At the same time, thousands of miles away in the Dark Land of Mordor, the Witch-king of Angmar, leader of the Nazgûl, suddenly let out a painful shriek. His hollow armor and mask twisted and deformed in agony, his spirit body severely damaged, becoming even dimmer, as if it would dissipate at any moment.
This sudden change startled the other Nazgûl, but they didn't understand what had happened. Just as the Nazgûl were in a panic, a huge, burning eye appeared. The edges of the giant eye were red flames, and its pupil was a bottomless void of darkness. A tall, terrifying, pitch-black figure emerged in the vertical pupil, radiating an incredibly powerful and dark aura.
The Demon Eye's pupil, like a black hole, sucked in the weakened Witch-king of Angmar. When he reappeared, he had regained his powerful form.
"A new wizard has appeared in Middle-earth? Find out his origin; there can be no variables affecting my return!" An ancient Black Speech, as if from an abyss, emanated from the Demon Eye. Every syllable was imbued with unspeakable evil power, full of allure and corruption.
"Yes, my Master!" The Nazgûl bowed down in awe and submission beneath the Demon Eye.
...
The expedition party, meanwhile, was oblivious to the events in the distant darkness. Everyone was collecting the jewels and accessories left behind by the wights and burying their bodies. As Gandalf said, these wights were originally brave warriors who died in battle, only to be defiled by the Witch-king of Angmar's dark magic, thus unable to rest in peace. Their bones should not be left exposed in the wilderness.
Kael, on the other hand, found Gandalf and asked for his help. "Gandalf, can you check if there's anything wrong with me? Why did the Witch-king of Angmar say he marked me?"
Gandalf's expression became solemn upon hearing this. "Don't resist, I'll check you with magic." He then pressed the staff in his hand against Kael's chest, emitting a holy light. Enveloped by the light, Kael felt as if he were soaking in a hot spring, his entire body becoming very comfortable.
However, the next moment, Gandalf put away his staff, his expression somewhat serious. Seeing his expression, Kael felt uneasy and quickly asked, "Gandalf, what's wrong? Is there really something wrong with me?"
Gandalf shook his head and comforted him. "Don't be nervous, it's just a curse. You must have picked it up when you entered the Barrow-downs earlier. It's not harmful, it just makes you more susceptible to the attraction of dark creatures. Hmm, it's like you've become more delicious food."
Kael was not comforted, and he also couldn't figure out when he had contracted the curse. He was clearly very careful back then. "Gandalf, do you have any way to remove this curse from me?" Kael didn't want to carry such a curse, especially in situations like today, with wights swarming out. He didn't want to encounter that again.
Gandalf smiled and nodded. "This curse is difficult for others to solve, but you just happened to meet me." As he spoke, he raised his right hand, and a brilliant ruby-encrusted ring appeared on his finger. The ring shone with a fiery, warm light, as if he were wearing a sun on his hand.
"This is..." The Ring of Fire, Narya. Kael's eyes widened, looking at the ring on Gandalf's hand with admiration. This was the first time he had seen the true form of Narya with his own eyes. It was truly beautiful!
Gandalf gently patted his shoulder with the hand wearing the ring. A sun-like energy swept through Kael's body, easily sweeping away a trace of curse power hidden within him. Kael instantly felt his body clear, as if internal sediment had been removed, and his entire being became light.
"There!" Gandalf withdrew his hand.
"Thank you, Gandalf!" Kael said with great gratitude.
"Glad I could help!" Gandalf shook his head, once again making the ring on his finger disappear. Seeing Kael's gaze unconsciously linger on his hand, he playfully winked at him, shushed him, and whispered, "This is a little secret, remember to keep it for me!"
Kael nodded, a little amused and touched. Gandalf's willingness to openly display the Ring of Fire to him and help him remove the curse was enough to show his trust in him.
