Chapter 12: Chapter 12
Self-actualization.
It was real. Angels self-actualized. His theory was right. Once he made sure that Charlotte Richards had settled into Heaven nicely, he couldn't wait to tell all his siblings about his discovery. First, he thought he'd tell Remiel all about it. But he didn't get a chance. She was too busy sparring and training. He couldn't fault her for that. She had to live up to her legendary big brother. Maybe he'd see if Zadkiel or Jophiel would listen. If they were too busy, he could always try talking to Gabriel. Of course, then the challenge would to get her to stop talking.
Maybe not.
Maybe he should head back to Earth. Somebody should tell Lucifer that Charlotte had made it to Heaven. Plus, he had to admit, he was missing his human friends a great deal as well. A few more minutes in Heaven couldn't hurt – especially after how long he had longed to return. He started to stroll through one of his favorite fields. As he leisurely walked through the luscious green field and took in the beautiful scenery of the Silver City, a familiar face caught his eye sitting against a mighty oak tree. As the distance between him and the Devil's Twin grew shorter, Amenadiel could see that Michael wasn't so much sitting against the tree in relaxation, but braced against it, as if he were in pain.
Michael had his eyes scrunched closed so tightly that if they were any tighter, he'd tear straight through his eyelids. The bark of the tree he was braced against caused some of his white robe to ride up on his back as he started to slowly slide down to the grassy ground.
"Michael?" Amenadiel leant forward in concern, resting his hands on his own robed thighs, "Are you all right?"
"It burns!" Michael gritted out.
"What's burning?" Amenadiel looked his brother up and down and didn't see a single spark of flame.
"My face," Michael popped his eyes open and panted, "My face is burning, Amenadiel."
"Your face looks fine, Michael," Amenadiel shook his head as he knelt down on one knee to be eye-level with the Archangel.
Michael shook his head, though it looked pained to do so.
"My face is burning," Michael repeated and panted out, "It won't stop… it's been on fire for hours…"
"I don't…" Amenadiel was at a loss as to how he could help his younger brother, "How do I- how do I help, Brother?"
Michael closed his eyes once again and completely slid to the ground, his sandaled feet slid in the grass, stopping a few inches from Amenadiel's own foot.
Before either Michael or Amenadiel could say anything else, Amenadiel received a prayer from Lucifer. Amenadiel instinctively closed his eyes and listened…
"Amenadiel. Brother… I've got a problem…" he heard Lucifer pray.
After Lucifer cut off his prayer (what would Linda need to talk to him about anyway?), Amenadiel opened his eyes.
"I think I might know where the burning is coming from, Michael," Amenadiel said.
"Where?" Michael practically whined.
"Something's going on with Lucifer," Amenadiel replied.
"Lucifer… Of course it's Lucifer," Michael whimpered with a pained eye-roll.
Amenadiel pushed on his own knee to stand up, "I better go and see if I can help."
Michael once again opened his eyes just in time to see his eldest brother give him a nod and turn to walk away before unfurling his large grey wings and disappearing from the Heavenly plane.
Shortly after, very slowly, the burning sensation on his face eased. Once it completely ceased, Michael let out a relieved breath and rolled out on to the grass, his arms spread out on either side of him. What in the Hell was that?! And what did it have to do with Lucifer? He had heard rumors about Lucifer's burned visage. Was that what his Twin felt when he was first tossed into the Lake of Fire in Hell all those eons ago? He swallowed and his Adam's apple bobbed. No need to dwell on that now. Should he visit his Twin? Earth was a cesspool. He hadn't visited the Devil the entire time he had run Hell. Why start now? Certainly not with Earth. He had his Heavenly duties to attend to anyway.
He'd get up to do them…
In a minute.
~*~
Amenadiel gracefully landed on Lucifer's balcony to his penthouse – the rising sun's rays shining over him in almost-like halo. Amenadiel smiled at the thought as he furled his wings and slowly stepped into his brother's home. The smile on his face slowly morphed into an expression of confusion as he looked around.
He was no stranger to seeing strangers littered around Lucifer's penthouse in slumber. It was an entirely different feeling when he recognized said humans. Thankfully, the circumstances seemed vastly different to the usual. Daniel Espinoza was sprawled out on Lucifer's leather couch and was that the laboratory technician lying next to him? What were they doing here if Lucifer couldn't control his Devil Face?
Dare he look into the Devil's bedroom? Silently, he crossed the lounge area to peer into Lucifer's bedroom. What an unexpected but pleasant surprise. He couldn't help but smile at the scene. Chloe's daughter was sandwiched between Chloe and Lucifer in his bed. Chloe's head rested above her daughter's on the pillow with Lucifer's resting on Trixie's other side – the two of them framing the young girl. The two adults were still asleep – Lucifer's mouth was slightly agape and Chloe wore a dreamy smile. The child was awake. She sleepily waved at Amenadiel and put her finger to her lips in the universal sign to stay quiet as she subtly looked to her left and right at the still slumbering Lucifer and Chloe. Amenadiel nodded in understanding.
Additionally, it appeared that Lucifer's issue of his Devil Face being stuck in place was gone – as his jet black, majestically-styled hair was back. Amenadiel thought he'd never seen his little brother more at peace in sleep than with Chloe and Trixie by his side.
Amenadiel sent a questioning look to the only other awake occupant in the room as he pointed at his brother and Chloe and then back at Dan and Ella. Hopefully the young girl would understand his silent question.
Trixie nodded and put up one finger before she slowly got out of the bed without disturbing either sleeping party with the skill only a child possesses. With Trixie out of the bed, Chloe subconsciously scooted closer to Lucifer and rested her arm on his chest as she snuggled into his side with an even bigger smile.
"Hi, Amenadiel," Trixie whispered, "What are you doing here?"
"Hi, Trixie," Amenadiel whispered back, "Lucifer called me… what are you all doing here?"
"We escaped a demonic kidnapping," Trixie announced in a stage whisper.
"Demonic?" Amenadiel furrowed his brow. He quickly looked around the room as if the danger was still present. Was Maze still going through whatever it was she had been going through lately? How long had he been gone? He wasn't sure how long in Earth time it had taken for him to get Charlotte settled in the Silver City.
"Yeah," Trixie continued to stage whisper, oblivious to Amenadiel's thoughts, "Some demons named Dromos and Squee are working for this evil priest guy and they tried to take Lucifer back to Hell, but we didn't let them!"
Amenadiel's eyes almost bugged out of his head.
Just what the hell had happened in his absence?!
"Trixie, I think your imagination might be getting the better of you," Amenadiel shook his head. How could the child know of Dromos and Squee? Just what had his brother been telling her?
Trixie just returned an un-amused expression in response to the extremely patronizing remark. Why did adults always do that to her? She guessed it was just proof that Angels were no different than human adults when it came to patronizing kids.
"A-Amenadiel? Is that you?" Dan's sleepy voice caused said Angel to turn around to see Dan sitting up on the couch facing his direction and rubbing at his eyes.
Amenadiel replied with an acknowledging nod of his head.
"What? What's going on?" Ella popped up from the couch once her pillow (aka Dan) stood up and started to walk over to Amenadiel and Trixie.
The slight commotion was enough to raise the Devil and his cuddling partner from their slumber. Chloe raised her head and started to slip out of the bed before Lucifer could fully fathom that she had even been asleep on him. He joined the growing group in the center of his lounge area as Ella had now joined them.
"Brother! You actually came," Lucifer greeted his brother.
"Lucifer, perhaps we should talk privately for a moment?" Amenadiel nodded his head toward the balcony but Lucifer made no move to move.
"Why are you wearing a dress?" Trixie looked up at Amenadiel.
Lucifer snickered.
"Because he likes it, Child," Lucifer replied to Trixie before turning his attention to his brother, "There's no need to speak privately, Amenadiel. They all know about me. Just look at my face."
"Lucifer, your face is back to normal!" Chloe beamed in delayed realization as she grabbed Lucifer's arm in excitement.
"It is?!" Lucifer quickly rubbed at his face only to feel smooth skin where it had been far too leathery for far too long, "It is!"
Lucifer laughed in relief.
"Lucifer, do you want to tell me just what is going on?" Amenadiel got straight back to the point, his patience growing thin.
"Do you want the short version or the long version?" Lucifer returned.
"No, seriously, dude. Why are you wearing a dress?" Dan couldn't help but interject.
"It's a robe," Amenadiel reflexively replied.
"Oh! Is that what you guys wear up in Heaven?" Ella excitedly asked as she poked at his sleeveless shoulder in awe.
Amenadiel was at a loss for words. Ella continued to poke at his attire. Did Lucifer have a Celestial Coming Out Party while he was gone?
Chloe took pity on him, "Lucifer, why don't you bring your brother up to speed on what's going on. I should really see if my phone is done charging and put out a BOLO on Kinley and put in a report about everything that happened last night… well, almost everything."
"Come on, guys," Chloe motioned with her head for everyone to give the brothers a few minutes of privacy.
Dan and Ella gave an acknowledging nod to Amenadiel before making themselves scarce to another part of the penthouse. Trixie didn't make any move to walk away but one look from Chloe and she reluctantly followed her mother, giving the brothers some time to talk.
"What's going on, Lucifer?" Amenadiel asked once everyone else was out of earshot.
"Well, I explained in my prayer," Lucifer started, "My Devil Face was stuck and I needed your help. I thought maybe one of these books might give us some insight on how to get my face back to normal and with your affinity for research, being the book nerd that you are, I thought you'd be able to find the necessary information much sooner than me, but thankfully that's moot now."
"No, Luci, I meant what's going on with everyone knowing you're actually the Devil?" Amenadiel figured that much from Lucifer's prayer. What he didn't understand was all of their friends' presence if he had had no control over his Devil Face.
"Yes, well, that's another long story actually," Lucifer replied.
"I'm listening," Amenadiel said.
"Right, well, after Cain killed Charlotte," Lucifer started, "I really appreciate you giving her a first-class ticket to the Silver City, by the way."
Amenadiel gave Lucifer a smile and a nod at that.
Lucifer stopped for a breath before continuing.
"Naturally, there was an investigation into her murder… one thing led to another and the Detective and I ended up in a trap. There was a showdown that ended with my wings getting chock full of a hail of bullets. I got the Detective out of harm's way and then Cain and I fought. He's now downstairs in Hell thanks to me. Miss Lopez and Daniel somehow ended up there only to get front row tickets to the return of my Devil Face. I had control over it then. Remarkably, they both stuck around. Fast forward to a Game Night, the Detective looked beautiful. The night was going rather swimmingly before it ground to a halt ending with us all being kidnapped by an insane priest who somehow employed Dromos and Squee. Don't get me started on the fact that my demons are possessing people again. That's a whole other thing."
Amenadiel's eyes slowly grew larger as Lucifer's story went on.
"Whilst we were in the priest's evil lair that with its labyrinth of doors and holding cells could give Hell a run for its money, I felt this strange rippling feeling run through me and the next thing I know, the Urchin is pointing out that my Devil Face is on full display and I couldn't revert back to my normal visage. The Detective's offspring knew about me already, by the way. Even I didn't know she knew. Anyways, we all managed to escape, mostly unscathed – namely the Detective finding out I'm truly the Devil. Miss Lopez had mentioned something about some coin she discovered connected to our latest case that most likely is in this crazy priest's possession and I thought we all should retire to my penthouse to rest and to keep everyone out of harm's way from said priest while I researched the best I could on how he was using this coin to keep my Devil Face in place. I couldn't find anything, so naturally I thought of you to help. So, I prayed to you. I wasn't getting anywhere with the research so the Detective convinced me to get some sleep… and then you arrived."
Lucifer finally finished, "And now you're caught up. Detailed enough for you, Brother?"
"Wow," Amenadiel breathed.
"Now that I'm back to my Devilish good looks, I think if you're up for it, you could still try to find information on this alleged coin so we can stop this Father. He's a killer and he still needs to be punished," Lucifer started over to his now mostly-empty bookshelves. He turned to see Amenadiel still standing in the same spot, "I really would appreciate your help, Brother… If you're up to it."
Amenadiel slowly walked up to Lucifer and picked up one of the discarded books near the Devil's feet.
"So, what's this coin look like?" Amenadiel set the book down at the desk that only seemed to get any use from him.
Lucifer opened his mouth to reply but Ella answered, coming up behind Amenadiel enthusiastically with Dan trailing behind her.
"It was a small dark grey coin. It fit in the palm of my hand. One side had what I think was a pentagram emblazoned on it. There was a horn-headed figure in the middle of it. The other side had a sword in the center of what looked like an eclipsed sun."
"You were eavesdropping on our entire conversation, weren't you, Miss Lopez?" Lucifer knew.
"Maybe," Ella looked sheepish.
"You said it was a two-sided coin?" Amenadiel ignored Lucifer's comment. Better to get the needed information.
"All coins are two-sided," Lucifer unhelpfully pointed out.
"That's not why I'm asking, Lucifer," Amenadiel rolled his eyes, "This coin that this priest has in his possession is powerful. If it's the coin I think it is… it even affected Michael up in Heaven."
"How do you mean?" Lucifer furrowed his brow at the same time Ella fangirled about another name drop of an Archangel.
"I think Michael felt your face," Amenadiel said as he noticed Chloe and Trixie slowly make their way over to rejoin the group.
"You might want to rephrase that or elaborate," Lucifer deadpanned.
"I think Michael was feeling how your Devil Face felt when you first landed in Hell," Amenadiel elaborated. His eyes darted to Trixie, afraid to go into too much detail in front of the young girl, "He spoke of it burning."
"Michael felt the burn?" Lucifer was not expecting that.
Amenadiel nodded grimly.
"Good!" Lucifer burst out, "It's about bloody time he knew what I went through given that he was the one that physically cast me out and our face was the last thing I saw before I Fell."
"Why would your other brother feel the effects of your other face?" Chloe brought up a good point, "Does he feel it all the time?"
"No, this is the first he's ever spoken of it," Amenadiel quickly answered, "I think the only reason Michael felt anything this time was from the coin's influence."
"But why would he feel it?" Ella agreed with Chloe, "Do you have some sort of special connection to Michael over your other siblings?"
"In a way…" Lucifer answered evasively, "He's my Twin."
"You've got a twin?" Dan choked. Based on all the other humans' expressions, they all had a similar reaction to that piece of information.
"Yes and our face is the only redeeming quality about him, honestly," Lucifer said.
"You have a twin and you never thought you'd mention that?" Chloe shook her head.
"I didn't think it'd ever come up," Lucifer shrugged, "It's not like he'd come down from the Silver City and try to take over my life, right?"
Chloe rolled her eyes.
"So, this coin thing that Father Kinley has is so powerful it can affect both Lucifer and Michael?" Ella got back to the issue at hand.
"How do we fight something like that?" Dan looked concerned.
"It seems you're already familiar with this coin," Lucifer turned to his brother, "I thought it rang a faint bell, but obviously it wasn't what I thought it was… What is it? And how did it get to Earth?"
"I don't believe it has a name," Amenadiel began. He headed back over to the bookshelf and perused the titles that were still left on the shelves. Apparently he didn't find what he was looking for and turned his attention to the discarded books on the floor.
Everyone's eyes were on Amenadiel as he let out 'Hmmms' and muttered under his breath until he found what he was looking for from one of the books Lucifer had discarded the night previously.
He stepped back to the group while holding out one of the books opened to his discovery.
"I had heard rumors that Father had made a special talisman that would control the Demiurge if both of you had become too… volatile… as a sort of failsafe," Amenadiel tapped one of the pages, "This is it."
"I guess I should count myself lucky He didn't decide to use it during my Fall, eh?" Lucifer commented as he took the book from his brother's hands.
"Was that in one of the books you threw away last night?" Dan asked.
"No need to waste time pointing fingers, Daniel," Lucifer commented and looked down at the open book.
"To be honest, I believe Father might have created the coin after you were exiled to Hell," Amenadiel said, "Thankfully it doesn't seem to be at its full capacity – especially with a mortal commanding it. Otherwise, I would fear the consequences would be disastrous."
"So, this talisman-coin thing is like their kryptonite?" Chloe asked as she stepped closer to Lucifer to peer over his shoulder at the page Lucifer was reading.
"What's kryptonite?" Amenadiel furrowed his brow.
"You know so many books, but you've never picked up a comic book?" Lucifer raised a brow. He turned to Chloe, "Yes, if what Amenadiel has said is true, I guess this thing would act as a weakness. Though I would've preferred it if it hadn't lumped me together with Michael."
"As to how it ended up on Earth?" Amenadiel lifted one shoulder in a half a shrug, "I have no idea… I assume it ended up here the same way that God Johnson's belt buckle did."
"Wait… God Johnson from our investigation last year God Johnson?" Chloe looked back and forth at the brothers. She laughed uneasily, "That wasn't really your Dad, right?"
"No, he tapped into our Father's power accidentally by way of his belt buckle," Lucifer told her, "That's a whole other story really."
"Just how many Celestial things happened without us knowing?" Ella asked.
Amenadiel looked up like he was trying to count, but Lucifer patted his shoulder to stop him and looked to the forensic scientist, "Best we not get too in-depth about that right now, Miss Lopez. We should focus on our current problem."
Lucifer turned his attention back to the book to see what he could read on the subject.
"Well, I think the first thing we need to do is find out where the bad guy is and take away his power with this coin so he can't hurt Lucifer anymore," Trixie spoke up.
"We will figure out what we need to do next, Monkey," Chloe circled her finger to the adults in the room and then pointed at Trixie, "You are heading to my mom's as soon as possible until this all blows over."
"Aw, Mom," Trixie groaned.
"No arguing, young lady," Chloe folded her arms, "This is dangerous and I'll feel a lot better knowing you're safe."
Trixie looked to her dad as if he would argue to her point but she only found him nodding along in agreement with her mom. She then looked up at Lucifer. Surely he wouldn't brush her to the sidelines.
"I'm afraid I have to agree with your mother, Urchin," Lucifer knew what Trixie was going to ask before she could even open up her mouth. He hadn't even looked up from the book, "This whole ordeal is no place for a small human."
"But you said that the safest place for us was here," Trixie argued.
"I said my place might be the safest place for everyone last night because I doubted that Kinley would want to enter the Lion's den," Lucifer countered, looking up from the book, "Who knows what he might try in the light of day."
"But I'm involved. He kidnapped me too. Wouldn't taking me to stay with Nana put her in danger?" Trixie contended.
Chloe huffed as she folded her arms. Her daughter was too clever sometimes.
"If we could limit the amount of humans in the know about Divinity, it would be appreciated," Amenadiel lifted a finger to interject, agreeing with Trixie.
"What about Maze?" Ella suggested.
"What about her?" Dan wasn't following.
"Why don't we get Maze to look after Trixie?" Ella elaborated.
"She's off on a bounty," Lucifer waved off the suggestion. Trixie grinned. The adults' plan to exclude her from this adventure was starting to crumble.
"But I could call her and bring her up to speed," Lucifer continued and Trixie's grin dropped off her face.
"You couldn't ask for better protection than Mazikeen," Amenadiel looked to Chloe who looked like she was weighing all the options.
Chloe looked to her daughter who was giving her mother her best puppy dog look built to guilt her into getting her way.
Chloe let out a conceding sigh.
"Call Maze and see if she can watch Trixie," Chloe gave in with a look to Lucifer as Trixie fist-pumped the air in triumph. Having Maze watch her was better than being taken out of the game completely.
"BUT…" Chloe wasn't finished, "If Maze isn't able to watch you 'til we stop this Kinley, you'll still be nowhere near the action. Got it?"
"Got it," Trixie begrudgingly nodded.
"If Maze isn't amenable to watch the Urchin, I'm sure the good doctor would be willing or maybe tag-team with Maze," Lucifer suggested and looked to Amenadiel, "And you wouldn't have to worry about another human finding out about the Celestial world."
"Wait a minute, Linda knows about you?" Chloe wasn't expecting that, "I'm really the last to find out, aren't I?"
"I'll see if I can catch Mazikeen up on what's going on and see if she can watch the child," Lucifer went in search of his phone as he handed the book off to Dan, pointedly not answering the Detective. He wasn't sure if she was hurt or not by the fact that she was the last in their circle of friends to find out he is truly the Devil.
"How are we gonna find Kinley anyway?" Ella asked, "I mean there's no guarantee that the BOLO you put out on him will work quickly, if at all."
"We might not have to worry about the BOLO," Dan said as he tapped the page of the book Lucifer handed him, "It says here we might be able to use the coin as a lo-jack."
"That solves one problem," Ella said, "But what do we do when we find him? What if Kinley still has those demon lackeys with him? Won't they try to make Lucifer go back to Hell? I shudder to think how they'd even try accomplishing that."
"In short of dying, I'm not going anywhere, Miss Lopez," Lucifer walked back into the room, raising his phone in the air and waving it, "Maze is on her way."
He looked to Trixie, "Looks like you're on the bench, Urchin."
"What if the bad guy tries to use the coin on Lucifer again before we can get to him? What else can the coin do?" Trixie pulled the book down from her father's hands to try and get a better look.
"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it, Beatrice," Lucifer said as Dan shut the book on his thumb, keeping the information away from his daughter's view. Trixie looked up at Lucifer. He must be really serious. He rarely called her by her full first name.
"I just want to help," Trixie looked up at all the adults in the room. She tried her best to keep the whine out of her voice.
"I know you do, Monkey, but the best thing you can do to help is by staying safe," Chloe crouched down to Trixie's level and rubbed her daughter's arms in reassurance.
"Can I at least try to help with the research until Maze gets here?" Trixie bargained. Chloe looked up at Dan, exchanging looks. Dan wordlessly held out the book to Trixie. She took the book from her father and hopped up into the seat at Lucifer's desk to get to work.
