Chapter 88: The Great Sage Huangfeng
Lu Yu cast one final glance at the disappearing Wanshou Mountain, then summoned the Auspicious Clouds beneath his feet and flew eastward. He felt it was better to inform the Monkey about this news sooner rather than later.
However, as he flew on his way, a violent wind blocked his path.
This was no ordinary Great Wind, but a howling storm carrying swirling sand. Lu Yu was certain that when he first came to this place it was a pristine landscape, yet now it was transformed into a barren desert under the force of this wind.
While Lu Yu paused to observe, a Demon emerged from the maelstrom.
This Demon looked ferocious, clad in Golden Armor with a yellow brocade robe over it, and a dazzling pheasant feather tucked into his helmet. He had the face of a rat, covered with yellow fur.
"Haha, heaven truly favors me! Just as I was thinking of how I finally escaped my confinement and needed someone to break my fast on, a Cultivator delivers himself to my door. This is fate!" the Demon laughed loudly.
Being a man-eater, the Demon naturally knew that a Cultivator's flesh, untainted by the grains of the mortal realm, was exceptionally delicate and that its Spiritual Energy was so compelling it could significantly enhance a Demon's Mana. Confident in his vast Divine Skills, the Demon didn't take common Cultivators seriously, hence his audacious declaration.
Lu Yu's brows furrowed. This place was not a node on the Journey to the West, so why was there such a fierce Demon here? Thus, he asked, "What Demon are you, to speak so wildly in this place?"
"I am the Great Sage Huangfeng. Meeting me today is your fate; you should become my meal. Stop struggling, and accept your death gracefully," the Demon, who had no name of his own, boasted. Since escaping Mount Ling, he had been imprisoned by Lingji Bodhisattva and never had a chance to make a name for himself.
Hearing Lu Yu's question now sparked an idea, and he made up the name Great Sage Huangfeng on the spot.
Once he uttered this name, he was overwhelmingly pleased with himself, making the Cultivator before him suddenly appear much more agreeable. He thought to himself that he would make his death quick to spare him unnecessary suffering.
"Great Sage Huangfeng, pssh, even a mere rat dares to bluff and claim to be a great saint," Lu Yu scoffed.
As soon as the Demon announced its name, Lu Yu knew—wasn't this the Rat Essence from Huang Fengling? Why was it causing trouble here? He then realized that unlike the fictional tale, this real world did not necessarily follow the same patterns, and perhaps this Demon had not yet reached Huang Fengling.
"Who exactly are you? Announce your name at once!" The Great Sage Huangfeng, startled by Lu Yu's words, quickly scanned his surroundings to ensure there were no Buddhists in ambush before he relaxed and asked Lu Yu to identify himself. After all, there were not many who knew he had escaped.
"Who I am is none of your business. If you want to fight, then fight, and quit your blathering!" Lu Yu provocatively responded.
At these words, the Great Sage Huangfeng felt deeply insulted. Fuming with rage, he hopped about and shouted angrily, "You brazen yellow-haired brat! How dare you provoke this Great King! I swear I'll flay and dismember you!"
No sooner had the words left his mouth than the Great Sage Huangfeng came at Lu Yu with a steel trident. Lu Yu, unruffled, dodged the attack, pulled out a brick, and smacked it straight onto his head.
The brick was no ordinary weapon and thus caught the Great Sage Huangfeng entirely by surprise. Before he could react, his head took a solid hit from the brick, leaving him seeing stars and feeling dizzy. Experience more tales on My Virtual Library Empire
Looking at the detestable human in front of him, now appearing as three figures, he quickly shook his head to clear it from the dizziness.
Lu Yu certainly wouldn't miss such an opportunity, so when the Great Sage Huangfeng finally recovered from his dizziness, what greeted him was an endless onslaught of Lu Yu's sword light.
Wrapped in the sword light, the Great Sage Huangfeng could do nothing but awkwardly wield his steel trident, parrying frantically from left to right, and was quickly put at a disadvantage.
Lu Yu, with the upper hand, showed no mercy. His Sword of State chopped faster and faster, and before long, the Great Sage Huangfeng's body was marred with several fresh wounds from which crimson blood slowly oozed.
"Ah! Villain, I will tear you to a thousand pieces!" The Great Sage Huangfeng bellowed miserably to the sky. Had it not been for his strong physique, honed by secretly consuming sacred oil at Mount Ling, he would have been chopped into pieces by Lu Yu's sword long ago. Even so, under the relentless attack, he became riddled with wounds.
With a loud roar, using all of his mana, he fended off Lu Yu's sword light and flashed a dozen feet away in an instant, his small eyes filled with hateful glare, staring intently at Lu Yu.
He then performed his signature divine skill, took a deep breath, and blew towards Lu Yu. Suddenly, a fierce wind sprung out of nowhere, mixed with sand, and looked extremely terrifying.
Seeing that the Great Sage Huangfeng had unleashed his signature move, Lu Yu dared not be careless. He quickly summoned the Treasure Vase, letting down the light of merit to protect himself.
The storm struck, with the ferocious wind carrying sand that battered Lu Yu, but it was all blocked by the light of the Treasure Vase, not hurting him in the slightest.
Lu Yu was not to be outdone and used his divine skills. The sky, previously obscured by the sand, suddenly filled with dark clouds. Out of nowhere, a great wind came without sand but with moisture instead, and soon a torrential rain fell, washing all the flying sand out of the sky.
Lightning streaked through the dark clouds. Seeing his wind unable to affect Lu Yu, the Great Sage Huangfeng already thought of retreating. Now that his sand had been neutralized by Lu Yu's ability to summon wind and rain, he lost his will to fight and turned to flee.
Suddenly, thunder struck from the sky, which seemed to be a signal. In an instant, countless more followed, and the place was instantly transformed into a sea of thunder.
The blue thunder swept across the land, and after a long time, it finally faded away. As the dust settled, the Great Sage Huangfeng lay motionless on the ground, his fur charred black by the electricity.
"Dead?" muttered Lu Yu to himself, puzzled because if the Great Sage Huangfeng died here, then what would happen to the trouble at Huang Fengling in the Journey to the West.
However, when he walked over to the body of the Great Sage Huangfeng, he found that it wasn't really a body at all but just a piece of charred fur, the actual Great Sage Huangfeng had already escaped.
Lu Yu picked up the fur and examined it closely, muttering to himself, "Judging by its appearance, this must be the demon's own fur, turned into a magical treasure specifically for taking his place in death. What a coward, to refine his own fur into such an item."
Only this fur from his own body could bear his scent, so as to deceive others. Otherwise, the Great Sage Huangfeng would now be dead at the hands of Lu Yu.
Meanwhile, a thousand miles away from this spot, the Great Sage Huangfeng slowly revealed himself, murmuring fearfully, "That was too close—what kind of master did I encounter there? I nearly lost my life."
