Journey to the West: Treasure Vase of the Great Dao

Chapter 89: Becoming the King of the Mountain

At this moment, he looked around and realized he was in the midst of mountains.

The trees were lush and dense, and there were plenty of animals living among them, everything competing to grow, creating a scene brimming with vitality.

The peaks vied in beauty, towering and majestic, with mountain flowers blooming everywhere and clear springs flowing over rocks.

"This really is a nice place, though I don't know which part of the Earth Realm it is, it's much better than that base plate I found before," the Great Sage Huangfeng talked to himself.

Just then, a magnificent tiger suddenly leaped out in front of him, pouncing towards him.

The Great Sage Huangfeng immediately became furious, "You beast dare lay a hand on me."

He had managed to escape his cage with great difficulty, feeling quite pleased with himself, but unexpectedly ran into Lu Yu, who had beaten him until he fled in panic. Now seeing a beast that hadn't even assumed human form daring to attack him, he was instantly filled with rage.

Without taking up a weapon, he pressed down with his hand, pinning the tiger's head, rendering it immobile; with a light toss, he threw the tiger far away. The tiger tumbled across the ground, rolling several times before stopping.

When the tiger's vision cleared, it discovered that the Great Sage Huangfeng had already leaped in front of it, steel trident in hand, ready to end its life.

"Great King, spare my life!" At that moment, the tiger suddenly spoke in human tongue, raising its paws above its head and shouting loudly.

"I hadn't realized you were another demon that had gained sentience. What gave you the courage to lay a hand on me?" the Great Sage Huangfeng said with a sinister smile.

The tiger suddenly stood up from the ground, shedding its disguise and revealing a tiger demon with a tiger's face and a human's body; it had just been masquerading as an ordinary tiger until then.

"I thought you were a demon that hadn't achieved human form, turns out you're good at playing dress-up," said the Great Sage Huangfeng with a laugh.

"The Great King doesn't know, I have only recently achieved human form. It's much more convenient to scout and capture humans in my beast form, so I've kept my disguise. I saw the Great King standing here distracted, which is why I harbored malicious intent.

I hope Lord Wang is magnanimous and will spare me, for I am willing to serve diligently before and after you, as your vanguard," said the tiger demon.

This tiger demon was a wild demon, and although it was wild and hard to tame, it had naturally developed a cunning mind in the brush. After initiating the attack, it realized the Great Sage Huangfeng was no ordinary individual and had already contemplated attaching itself to him.

Upon hearing this, the Great Sage Huangfeng was moved; he had just escaped from his prison and had not expected to encounter an adversary so soon, nearly dying by his hands. Now, with the tiger demon wishing to submit to him, it was exactly what he desired.

He had also toyed with the idea of becoming king of the mountain, giving orders and living the good life. Moreover, this tiger demon was clearly a native demon of this area, which would save him the trouble of being a stranger in a strange place. If he were to carelessly provoke a master like the one he encountered before, it would be unwelcome.

The Great Sage Huangfeng himself had transformed from a mouse, never being particularly brave. Previously, he had been able to strut around freely after shaking off his shackles but then ran into Lu Yu and was almost killed by him. Thus, he had resolved to be extra careful and cautious.

"I'll ask you, which part of the Earth Realm is this, and are there any formidable demons around?" the Great Sage Huangfeng asked the tiger demon.

"To report to the Great King, this area is known as Huang Fengling, and there are numerous demons nearby. But there aren't many formidable ones. Within a hundred miles, there is a snake demon who has claimed a mountain as its king; it's quite a figure," the tiger demon reported all that it knew.

"How strong is this snake demon?"

"It's about the same as me, except it's skilled in using poison. In our several encounters, it has relied on the deadly poison in its hands to triumph. If it were to meet the Great King, I'm afraid you could kill it with just a glance," the Tiger demon said, filled with flattery.

That damned snake demon had humiliated him time and again, and the Tiger demon had long harbored resentment in his heart. Now that he had the support of the Great Sage Huangfeng, he naturally hoped to wash away his past shame.

The Great Sage Huangfeng pondered for a moment and secretly thought: Huang Fengling, truly fitting for the name of the Great Sage Huangfeng, is a godsend. It should rightfully be mine.

"Lead the way, and I'll meet this snake demon," the Great Sage Huangfeng said with his hands clasped behind his back, striding boldly, sunlight reflecting dazzlingly off his golden battle armor, exuding the air of a great leader. It was only a pity that his rat-like face and the demeanor of a little demon somewhat ruined the atmosphere.

The Tiger demon agreed excitedly and hurriedly led the way. He was a thoughtful demon, clearing obstacles with his tail for the Great Sage Huangfeng while leading the way.

This action indeed pleased the Great Sage Huangfeng, who found the Tiger demon more and more agreeable.

In no time at all, the two arrived at the entrance of a cave dwelling. Seeing the words "Huang Fengling Wind Caves" at the entrance of the cave, the Great Sage Huangfeng burst into laughter, saying, "Indeed, it is a godsend. This perfectly honors my name."

"It's often said that Cave Heaven and Blessed Earth are resided by those with virtue. This cave dwelling, at first glance, seems prepared for the Great King," the Tiger demon said with a sycophantic smile, lifting the Great Sage Huangfeng's spirits and dispelling the despondent mood caused by his defeat by Lu Yu.

Their conversation woke up a little demon guarding the cave, who ran into the cave shouting as soon as he saw the fierce face of the Tiger demon: "Great King, disaster has struck! That Tiger demon has come to challenge us again, and there's a sneaky-lookin' fellow with him."

"What a fool who doesn't know life from death. I spared him once, and ungrateful at that, he dares to provoke me again," a chilly voice came from inside the cave.

Then, a man in a green robe emerged from the cave, his long green hair and slender eyes gleaming coldly, while his pale cheeks bore fine scales, giving him a terrifying look.

He walked out of the cave with a treasured sword in his hand and immediately saw the Tiger demon and the Great Sage Huangfeng following behind him.

"You spineless rat, you escaped with your life the last time, and yet you dare to come back. Do you think I run a Hall of Kindness?" the green-robed man said fiercely with his cold voice.

"You snake demon, don't be arrogant. If it weren't for your deceitful use of poison, how could I have lost to you? Now that my Great King has personally come, surrender quickly, lest you be left with no place to be buried," the Tiger demon, backed by the Great Sage Huangfeng, said audaciously, infuriating the green-robed demon to thunderous rage.

"Humph! I don't know where you've found this sneaky-looking demon, thinking you've found a backer. You truly overestimate yourself. Let the Great King show you just how formidable I am," the green-robed demon said through clenched teeth.

The mood of the Great Sage Huangfeng was very bad at this moment; he naturally detested snake demons on instinct, especially this one in green robe, reminding him involuntarily of that man in the green robe, further souring his mood.

Hearing the green-robed demon's words, he immediately became furious and said, "Enough talk, come meet your death before the Great King!"

With few words yet deeply insulting, the green-robed demon could no longer hold back and charged with his sword drawn.
