Chapter 593: The Unanswered Phone Call
Upon hearing Luo An mention "besides", Vireness furrowed her brows, rapidly coming up with a thought, and asked:
"Did you find out the identities of those members?"
"Not all of them, but I indeed have discovered the real identities of some people."
Looking at the passport-size photo in the folder, a chill flashed through Luo An's eyes as he said softly:
"For instance, the son of a certain congressman in Washington."
Because phone calls were considered insecure, Luo An didn't mention the name of the congressman or his son.
But Vireness's expression turned grave in an instant as she straightened up and asked:
"Luo An, are you sure?"
Luo An cracked a smile and said:
"If the person in the photo isn't an identical but half-sibling relation,
or if that person used to be thinner... I shouldn't have gotten his identity wrong."
Before Vireness could respond, Luo An added:
"Chief, in fact, if you hadn't called me first, I was about to call you.
I think this case might be more suitable for Mr. Clement to handle."
"I know."
Vireness nodded gravely, pondered for a brief moment, and then said:
"We can't send this information via email, Luo An. Dispatch the most trusted agent you have to personally deliver the folder to the Washington Headquarters."
"Understood."
After discussing a bit more, both hung up the phone. Luo An closed the folder with a smile, pushed the door, walked out of the conference room, and, looking towards Chenier, asked:
"Where are Winslow and Michelle?"
"They've already arrived in Washington D.C.; it should take another 5 minutes or so to reach the FBI Washington Headquarters."
Chenier tapped on the keyboard a few times before hurriedly looking up to answer, then asked somewhat puzzledly:
"Why did they set off so early?"
"Of course, as a precaution."
Luo An chuckled, patting Chenier on the shoulder.
In a place like Washington, there are secrets, yet there are no secrets; many things can't be hidden at all.
Since the day before yesterday when Reesi discovered the identities of a few members through tracking, Luo An realized that this "organization" must have someone behind it to have existed until now.
That being the case, Investigation Team 13, which was investigating this case, would likely be the focus of certain people's attention.
Thus, to prevent the clues from being destroyed and to forestall other incidents, Luo An found Winslow and Reesi early this morning before work hours, letting them take the folder to Washington Headquarters first.
By the time Vireness called later, the two had already reached Washington D.C.
Chenier suddenly understood while Reesi and Mona frowned slightly, as the two were still on their way to the FBI Washington Headquarters, so the risk remained.
Holding a coffee cup and waiting quietly for ten minutes, the office landline suddenly rang.
Ding-ling-ling—
The urgent ringing instantly drew the attention of everyone present; Chenier and Reesi's brows were tightly knitted, and Mona was visibly anxious.
Luo An remained composed and walked over to pick up the phone:
"Who is this?"
"It's me, Winslow."
On the other end of the phone, Winslow was in high spirits. Thinking back to the astonished look on Vireness's face in the office earlier, he chuckled and said:
"Mission accomplished. Michelle and I have delivered the goods."
"Did you deliver it personally to Vireness?"
"That's right."
"Good."
Having received an affirmative answer, Chenier, Reesi, and Mona let out a sigh of relief; Luo An's demeanor unwavered. After briefly praising the two, he then said calmly:
"From now on, you two will stay in the Washington Headquarters' Team 13 office, and even take a temporary rest there tonight."
"What?"
Upon hearing this, Winslow and Michelle on the phone, as well as Mona and Chenier on this end, were all taken aback.
But Winslow and Michelle quickly grasped the underlying meaning in Luo An's words and immediately nodded in agreement:
"Understood."
"OK."
The phone hung up. The color in Reesi's face shifted as she spoke softly:
"Luo An, isn't this a bit too tense?"
What Luo An called "staying in the office of Team 13" meant they shouldn't drive back to New York; the risk was too high.
"Stay put at Headquarters as a precaution; after all, not many people can storm the FBI Washington Headquarters to abduct someone or commit violent acts."
The meaning of these words was not difficult to guess, and Chenier, Reesi, and others understood immediately.
But understanding did not dispel their questions.
Luo An patted Reesi on the shoulder:
"In case of any eventuality, life is the most important thing."
Luo An had briefly put himself in the shoes of the "organization's" boss or leader, and he would have definitely recorded some people's murder videos secretly.
Later, when the "organization" was dismantled by law enforcement, those who had been blackmailed had only two paths to choose from:
Either they would send someone to kill the "organization's" leader during the law enforcement operation, or they would try to stop the law enforcement operation and rescue the "organization's" leader.
Honestly, Luo An thought the second possibility was unlikely.
But Luo An also couldn't be sure that those who were blackmailed were smart.
After all, smart people wouldn't go to such places.
Luo An wasn't afraid of smart people, but he was worried about those senseless guys, because he couldn't predict their thoughts and actions, and who knows if they would attempt a kidnapping en route.
"Alright."
Reesi was silent for a few seconds before asking:
"What do we do next?"
Luo An walked to the whiteboard at the front of the office area, which was covered with the "organization's" bases, member information, nearby maps, photographs, and more.
After pondering for a few seconds, Luo An said:
"First, we wait for news from the FBI Washington Headquarters.
Also, regarding the first serial murder case, how is the investigation on the doll's hair going?"
Reesi and Chenier didn't answer; they turned to look at Mona instinctively. Mona sat back down in her chair, typing on the keyboard, and said:
"Michelle and I have actually discovered some things."
Their eyes lit up, and they quickly moved to Mona's side as Luo An asked:
"Like what?"
"Like Michelle and I found several suspicious individuals."
Mona pulled up photographs of 14 men on her computer screen, saying:
"Gentlemen, these 14 men are all related to that doll.
They are either employees of the doll manufacturing company, managers of the doll distribution channels, or have a history of purchasing those dolls."
"How did you find these people...?"
Reesi looked doubtful, and seeing Mona turn towards her, she quickly waved her hands and said:
"I don't mean to distrust you; I'm just a bit puzzled. So many people have interacted with the doll; why do you suspect them?"
"Two reasons.
First, the profiling records, such as white male, around 40-55 years old; married or with a girlfriend, and well-educated; financially stable, etc."
Mona took a document from Michelle's desk and explained:
"The people we found are a perfect match for this profiling record."
Luo An nodded and then asked:
"What's the second point?"
"The second point is what the Forensic Trace Department found, the hair of that little dog."
Mona said:
"The FBI's internal database doesn't have dog DNA; indeed, we can't find the 'suspect dog', but it's possible to identify the breed of that dog.
The Trace Department, through testing, confirmed that the dog hair found on the victim came from a Labrador.
And amongst the 14 suspects Michelle and I found, each of them has a Labrador at home."
"One coincidence is a coincidence, two coincidences are an accident, but three coincidences are beyond explanation."
Luo An's eyes narrowed slightly; before he could continue, his phone suddenly rang at his waist.
Walking to the side and pressing the answer button, Luo An said:
"It's me, sir."
On the other end of the phone was Vireness, and right as Luo An finished speaking, Vireness spoke coldly:
"Luo An, Mr. Clement has already been informed about this matter. The formal arrest operation starts tomorrow!"
Luo An frowned slightly; he noticed something—why was it tomorrow?
Snap—
Before Luo An could ask, Vireness had already hung up the phone.
Luo An's expression changed slightly, as if he had thought of something, and he dialed Winslow and Michelle's numbers.
The ringing continued without answer.
