Chapter 7: A Fight With A Riftspawn
Kaz emerged from the cool waters of the oasis, droplets cascading down his face as he scanned the cavern. The massive scorpion Riftspawn lay sprawled near an ancient altar, its grotesque body heaving with slow, labored breaths. Around it, several smaller scorpions—each the size of full-grown tigers—were scattered, their glossy black shells glinting under the faint glow of the altar.
Kaz glanced at Ryuma, who stood beside him with a gleam in his golden eyes and a mischievous smile.
"That scorpion... it's a Riftspawn, right?" Ryuma asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Kaz nodded reluctantly, his gaze fixed on the sleeping monstrosity.
Ryuma's grin widened. "Do you know what that means? Killing it could get us at least 100 flux shards."
Kaz felt a chill run down his spine. He didn't need to hear Ryuma's next words to know what he was planning. Kaz and the imp on his shoulder both shuddered as Ryuma's grin turned into a determined expression.
"We should kill it," Ryuma said matter-of-factly. "It's injured, and it's the lowest tier of Riftspawn. We can take it down."
Kaz hesitated, weighing their options. With careful planning, we might be able to pull it off, he thought. But those smaller scorpions... they're no joke. He frowned, knowing full well that he lacked the strength to deal with such creatures on his own.
As if reading his mind, Ryuma placed several items into Kaz's hands. "You can keep these," Ryuma said, smirking, "but you can't keep my talisman."
Before Kaz could respond, Ryuma grabbed his hand, and a jolt of energy surged through him. The sensation wasn't painful—it was warm and invigorating, as though it were awakening something deep within his soul.
Kaz's consciousness was drawn into his Sanctuary, where his features, traits, and abilities were etched like sacred script. New information appeared before his eyes:

Kaz blinked as the vision faded, returning him to reality. He found a small charm in his hand—a square medallion engraved with the image of a dagger. In his other hand was a short sword made of gleaming blue steel, light yet sturdy.
He turned to Ryuma, his resolve hardening. "Alright, here's the plan. You fly up and wait for my signal. I'll take care of the smaller scorpions while they're still asleep. Once I strike the Riftspawn, you dive in and finish it off."
Ryuma nodded, his expression serious. "Got it."
Kaz's imp, sitting on his shoulder, tilted its head curiously before letting out a faint, encouraging chirp.
The cavern was silent except for the faint sound of water dripping from the stalactites. Kaz moved cautiously, each step calculated to avoid disturbing the sleeping scorpions. Despite their injuries, the smaller scorpions radiated an aura of menace. Their massive pincers twitched occasionally, and their segmented legs twitched faintly in their slumber.
Activating the Sharpblade Talisman, Kaz felt the aura envelop his sword, its edge now shimmering with a faint, deadly glow. He took a deep breath, his fingers tightening around the hilt.
The first scorpion lay closest to him, its body coiled protectively around a patch of glowing moss. Kaz crept forward and, with a swift slash, severed its head. The creature's body twitched once before going still.
Kaz moved quickly, targeting the next scorpion. Its massive frame loomed over him as he approached. With another precise strike, he sliced through its thick shell, silencing it before it could react.
He continued this method, his movements sharp and deliberate. The glow of the talisman enhanced his strikes, allowing him to dispatch the creatures with an efficiency that surprised even himself.
Above, Ryuma hovered silently, his shimmering wings making him nearly invisible against the darkness. He watched Kaz's progress, ready to strike when the time came.
Kaz approached the final smaller scorpion, his breath steady despite the tension. Just as he raised his sword, the creature stirred. Its massive pincers clicked together with a loud snap, and its black, beady eyes opened, locking onto Kaz.
The scorpion let out an ear-piercing screech, its legs scrambling to rise.
"Damn it!" Kaz cursed, slashing at its legs in an attempt to cripple it. The scorpion lunged at him, its pincers snapping dangerously close.
The commotion woke the Riftspawn. The massive creature reared up, its glowing eyes scanning the cavern as it let out a guttural roar.
"Now, Ryuma!" Kaz shouted, dodging a swipe from the smaller scorpion.
Ryuma dove from the air, his wings slicing through the shadows as he landed on the Riftspawn's back. Golden energy enveloped his fists as he slammed them into the creature's armored shell.
The Riftspawn screeched, its massive pincers flailing as it tried to shake Ryuma off. The smaller scorpion lunged at Kaz, forcing him to split his focus. He rolled to the side, his sword slicing through the creature's underbelly.
The imp, eager to help, leaped onto the Riftspawn's face. It clawed at the creature's eyes, dodging its snapping pincers with impressive agility.
"Keep it busy!" Ryuma called out, bracing himself as the Riftspawn bucked beneath him.
Kaz nodded, dashing toward the Riftspawn's legs. The talisman's sharp aura made quick work of its joints, forcing the creature to stagger.
"Hold it steady!" Ryuma yelled.
Kaz planted his feet, driving his sword deep into the creature's side. The Riftspawn let out one final, deafening screech before collapsing to the ground.
Ryuma leapt off its back, landing beside Kaz. The two stood panting, their bodies aching from the exertion.
The imp scampered back to Kaz, climbing onto his shoulder and patting his head as if to say, Good job.
Kaz let out a shaky laugh, collapsing onto the cavern floor. "We... we actually did it."
Ryuma grinned, clapping him on the back. "Told you we could handle it."
As the dust settled, Kaz glanced at the glowing altar. Its light had dimmed, leaving the cavern shrouded in a calm, almost peaceful darkness.
For now, the Riftspawn was defeated, and Kaz felt a flicker of hope that maybe—just maybe—they could survive this treacherous world together.
