Lost In Chaos

Chapter 8: Shining Altar

Kaz staggered to his feet, blood dripping from his lip as he walked over to Ryuma, who was lying prone on the ground. Extending a shaky hand, Kaz helped him up and returned the talisman. But before either could regain composure, a massive force slammed into them from the side.

Kaz's body was flung through the air, colliding with the altar in a bone-rattling impact. Gasping for breath, he blinked through the haze of pain to see the Riftspawn scorpion rising once again. Its massive, segmented body was battered and cracked, but its glowing eyes burned with feral determination.

"Damn it!" Kaz cursed, forcing himself to sit up. His muscles screamed in protest, his vision swimming as blood trickled down his temple. Looking over to Ryuma, he saw the boy lying motionless, the imp sprawled beside him. Neither stirred.

Panic surged in Kaz's chest. "What the hell am I supposed to do?" he muttered, his voice trembling. "I have no power. My trait is useless. I don't even have a lineage!"

The scorpion let out a guttural hiss, its massive pincers clicking menacingly as it stalked closer. Kaz scrambled backward, but the creature struck him with one of its limbs, sending him skidding across the cavern floor. His back slammed against the altar, the impact forcing a cry of pain from his lips.

As he struggled to rise, blood dripped from his lip and onto the altar's smooth, cold surface. Kaz's hands trembled as he clutched at the stone, his thoughts frantic. "I need help," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "Please... someone. Just a little help."

The moment the drop of blood touched the altar, the air in the cavern shifted. A low hum resonated through the space, growing in intensity. Suddenly, a burst of radiant light shot upward from the altar, illuminating the entire chamber in brilliant hues.

Kaz shielded his eyes, his heart racing as he looked up at the swirling array of lights. Each color seemed to represent a divine essence, their presence overwhelming and otherworldly.

But something was wrong.

One by one, the lights began to fade, their vibrant colors extinguishing as though they were being snuffed out.

"No," Kaz whispered, his voice cracking. "Wait... no, please! I still have a brother at home. I can't leave him alone. I won't be able to pay his bills if I die here! Please don't leave me!"

Tears streamed down his face as he watched the last of the lights vanish, leaving only darkness. But just as despair threatened to consume him, a single light remained—a brilliant purple hue that pulsed with an almost sentient energy.

The purple light grew brighter, filling the cavern with an ethereal glow. Kaz stared in awe as the light surrounded the scorpion. The creature thrashed wildly, its claws snapping at the air, but the light only tightened its grip.

The scorpion let out an ear-splitting screech as its body began to compress under the immense pressure. Its exoskeleton cracked and splintered, and the glow in its eyes dimmed. Finally, with a resounding crack, the Riftspawn was crushed, its lifeless body collapsing in a heap.

Kaz fell to his knees, his chest heaving as he stared at the remains of the creature. The purple light lingered for a moment longer before dissipating, leaving the cavern shrouded in an eerie silence.

Summoning what little strength he had left, Kaz stumbled over to Ryuma. He hoisted the unconscious boy onto his shoulder, tucking the imp back into his shirt. Every movement sent fresh waves of pain through his battered body, but he gritted his teeth and pressed on.

The cold waters of the underground lake greeted him as he jumped in, the chill soothing his injuries. He swam across, his breaths ragged and uneven, before finally pulling himself onto the rocky shore.

Kaz gently laid Ryuma and the imp on the ground, checking to make sure they were still breathing. Satisfied that they were alive, he allowed himself to collapse beside them. The weight of exhaustion overtook him, and he slipped into unconsciousness.

Kaz awoke in darkness.

The oppressive blackness surrounded him, swallowing all sound and sensation. His heart pounded as he looked around, his breath quickening.

And then he saw it.

A massive, glowing eye appeared before him, its violet hue mirroring the light from the altar. The eye was impossibly large, its gaze piercing and unrelenting. Kaz felt as though it were staring into the very core of his being.

A single word echoed in the void, surrounding him in all directions:

"Interesting."

The word resonated through Kaz's soul, carrying a weight that left him trembling. Before he could process what was happening, the darkness swirled around him, pulling him into a dreamscape of vivid, fragmented memories.

Kaz found himself standing in a desolate wasteland, the sky a churning mass of dark clouds. Ruins stretched as far as the eye could see, their once-grand structures reduced to rubble.

Figures moved in the distance—shadowy silhouettes locked in a chaotic battle. Kaz watched as monstrous beings clashed with radiant figures, their powers shaking the very earth.

Amid the chaos, Kaz spotted a lone figure standing atop a crumbling tower. It was impossible to make out their features, but their presence radiated an overwhelming sense of authority and dread.

The figure raised their hand, and the sky split apart, releasing a torrent of energy that engulfed the battlefield. Kaz shielded his eyes, the blinding light forcing him to turn away.

When he looked back, the wasteland was gone. He was back in the void, the massive eye still watching him.

The word echoed once more, its tone laced with curiosity and amusement:

"Interesting."

And then, everything went black.

Kaz jolted awake, gasping for air. His body ached, and his mind was a whirlwind of confusion. He sat up, looking around to find Ryuma and the imp still unconscious beside him.

The cavern was silent, the altar's glow now faint and subdued. But something had changed.

Kaz touched his chest, feeling a strange warmth emanating from within. Whatever had happened, he knew he was no longer the same.

For better or worse, the events of the altar had marked him—and he had a feeling his journey was only just beginning.
