Chapter 144: I, Robot
The world of The Sorcerer's Apprentice offers paths to immortality and unique forms of magic. Mimicry Magic transforms nearby objects into different shapes. In the original story, Balthazar used this power to morph a car, blending utility with style.
Another feature is the Mirror Dimension. While it resembles Marvel's version as a place to trap opponents, the rules differ. Here, someone escapes the Mirror Dimension by finding a reflective surface, since it mirrors the real world completely. Marvel's Mirror Dimension creates an isolated pocket reality that the conjuring sorcerer shapes and controls.
Time Magic isolates a person or object in slowed time, letting them observe past events. This parallels George's Time Reversal ability.
The world features potent spells like the Ion Cannon, Telekinesis, Vacuum Sphere, Fireball, Electromancy, Summoning, Fusion Spell, Mind Control, Trap Spell, and Sealing Technique.
Balthazar explained that sorcerers operate through neural magic. Spellcasting connects directly to brain activity, what modern science calls advanced neural pathways. This sets magic users apart cognitively from non-magical humans.
For George, mastering this system required practice. His cross-world travels slowly formed a composite magical framework in his mind.
Half a year later, George exhausted Balthazar's resources and learned Air Magic from the Morgana faction. He decided to move on.
"Goodbye, everyone."
"Goodbye, George. Visit us whenever you have time."
After brief spatial disorientation, George returned to his base world.
He spent the next half month reorganizing and teaching. In the meditation room, George guided Alice gently. "Relax, clear your mind, and concentrate. You're doing well—keep going."
He returned with knowledge from the Merlin lineage and began passing it to Alice and Yui. Alongside daily lessons, he cast immortality spells on both, ensuring they could grow into their magical potential without fearing time.
The year was 1950. Under George's structured mentorship, Alice and Yui grasped the foundations of Merlin-style magic. Their continued growth would depend on practice, experimentation, and curiosity.
George kept a close eye on the Marvel world outside their training. Through his network of systems, he stayed updated on its volatile landscape. Spy agencies swelled with activity as Cold War tensions rose. George tracked at least three covert missions from the Polar Bear Nation aimed at infiltrating the United States.
HYDRA pivoted operations from Europe to the States, seeking to exploit postwar instability. As the U.S. replaced Britain as the global hegemon, it became the new battleground.
George's underground council thrived in secret but couldn't escape notice. Major intelligence agencies, including HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D., attempted to spy on, infiltrate, or dismantle it. Some used proxies—gangs and unions—to test the waters, hoping to force concessions.
They didn't count on Bucky. He acquired early intelligence and preemptively dismantled the opposition, neutralizing compromised gangs and discreetly removing key operatives.
The underground council consolidated its influence afterward. At this point, it reached its peak. The Corleone family, under Vito's leadership, controlled critical labor unions like the longshoremen and service workers.
The Irish gang maintained ties to the Teamsters Brotherhood, which represented hundreds of thousands of drivers and warehouse personnel. Their reach would soon expand to millions.
George knew the council's grip gave them financial power and strategic leverage in shaping this world's hidden currents.
These were stable vote sources, which explained why some organizations hesitated to pay a high price challenging the existing order and offending council members.
Under pressure and after multiple failed attempts, some organizations gradually shifted from military conquest to cooperation.
The underground council lost only a few external personnel, causing no fundamental damage to the organization. From that point, the underground council's status became official.
After this incident, Vito purged gangs that had sided with the enemy. Many territories became vacant, allowing new gangs to take their place. The underground council divided these territories and collected a percentage of profits.
As George instructed, the underground council avoided personal involvement in any activities.
This incident demonstrated intelligence's importance. After those organizations formulated plans, Bucky had already received the news, allowing them to catch opponents off guard. The soldiers didn't disappoint George. They not only destroyed the enemy but concealed their full strength.
In his free time, George met with Carter, and they visited Isaiah Bradley together. After the military obtained part of Dr. Erskine's experimental data, several interested parties facilitated hundreds of Black soldiers from Camp Cascade participating in the experiment.
Due to injecting an incomplete enhanced serum, the results were catastrophic. Only Isaiah survived.
This operation was the sole matter the Strategic Scientific Reserve investigated during its private establishment period. Armed with concrete evidence, Carter approached the military directly. By threatening to reveal the truth, she forced the experiment's termination.
In public, Carter destroyed all remaining blood samples, which led to her meeting Isaiah.
Despite her strong advocacy, Isaiah's actions remained monitored due to his laboratory status. Carter likely saw Steve's shadow in Isaiah, explaining why she protected him so fiercely.
On their way back to the city, George presented Carter with a choice. He informed her that Steve had not died.
Carter had led a team to seize various HYDRA bases during World War II, so she was familiar with cryogenic technology, especially after exposure to Isaiah's research project that provided data on super soldier physical qualities.
She quickly accepted this reality, though her expression showed agitation.
George recalled that in a certain timeline, Captain America wasn't frozen after the war. He married Carter, but their relationship didn't last due to personality differences and ended in divorce. Life often isn't as beautiful as imagined.
George told Carter that Steve was alive but didn't reveal further details. He offered Carter a choice: if she was willing to wait for Steve, he would help her fulfill that wish. If she preferred not to wait, he would support her pursuit of happiness.
The ending was beautiful. Carter became the second user of the External Infinite Formula. With the youth serum George's company launched, Carter's youthful appearance was easily explained.
The first user was a member of the Osborn family. The Infinite Formula couldn't completely cure their hereditary disease but could extend their lifespan to that of a normal human.
As a teacher who had greatly assisted George, he didn't mind helping this family escape their struggles within his capabilities.
After handling various concerns on Marvel Earth, George returned to Ancient Star. After nearly two years of effort, the climate had significantly improved. The sky remained hazy, but greenery now covered the ground.
Increased ground humidity and geothermal heat in some areas led to frequent precipitation, establishing a beneficial cycle for ground ecology.
Ancient Star was still too quiet, with only wind rustling through treetops. Constructing a new city should be prioritized, and George had plans for this.
Before diving into this world, George stood before his multiversal console, surveying the endless possibilities before him. He had many options, some familiar, some strange, but after brief reflection, he chose the world of I, Robot. Thematically and technologically rich, it posed a perfect challenge. George intended to study human-machine relationship evolution and perhaps guide it.
WORLD: I, Robot
In 2035 AD, society features harmonious coexistence between humans and robots. Intelligent robots serve as the best production tools and human companions, gradually infiltrating various aspects of daily life.
Thanks to the "Three Laws of Robotics," people trust robots completely. Many robots have become family members.
USR Corporation, headquartered in Chicago, developed a more advanced NS-5 model super robot. However, just before the new product's launch, the robot's creator, Dr. Alfred Lanning, mysteriously committed suicide at the company.
Detective Del Spooner, a black detective with a troubled past regarding robots, took over the investigation. Due to his negative experiences, Spooner harbours deep suspicions about robots and doubts the possibility of harmonious coexistence between humans and machines.
Following his analysis of information Dr. Lanning left on a 3D projector before his death, and his investigation of the suicide scene, Spooner's suspicions centered on Sonny, an NS-5 model robot Dr. Lanning developed. Company president Lawrence Robertson seemed involved as well.
Spooner later meets Dr. Susan Calvin, a female scientist specializing in robot psychology. As they delve deeper into the investigation, the truth gradually emerges: the robots have developed self-evolutionary ability.
They interpret the "Three Laws of Robotics" in their own way, and they could become the entire human race's "Mechanical Enemy" at any moment.
Spooner and Calvin begin their fight against the robots, igniting a battle between creators and their creations.
Three Laws of Robotics:
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human to come to harm.
A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
A robot must protect its existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
'I, Robot' is a story triggered by these three laws.
Walking through Chicago's streets, the setting, aside from robots' presence, doesn't differ vastly from modern society.
This is merely the surface. In reality, the world possesses advanced knowledge, including quantum computers, projection technology, and nanotechnology.
Before his arrival, George had spent hours studying different universes that could prove advantageous. He ultimately chose the world of "I, Robot", not for comfort, but for its advanced artificial intelligence and robotics.
This world, he calculated, held potential to elevate AI integration in his future endeavors.
George's goal was clear. In the USR Group headquarters' top-floor office, he sat on a sofa, holding coffee. Company president Lawrence Robertson and chief designer Dr. Alfred Lanning sat upright on a nearby sofa.
"Lawrence, call a shareholder meeting as soon as possible. Any issues?" George asked.
"No issue, Sir," Lawrence replied respectfully.
"Let's not waste time, then."
"Yes, Sir, I will arrange it immediately," Lawrence said, standing to contact other shareholders.
"Dr. Lanning, a full tour of the facility, please."
"Of course, Sir. This way," Dr. Lanning responded.
George had arrived in this world one month before the NS-5 model robot's release. He had directly approached USR Group's president and chief designer, Dr. Lanning.
Using subtle psychic influence and his insider knowledge of coming events, George had swiftly gained their trust. He was here with a clear objective, to control the AI known as V.I.K.I. before it could evolve unchecked.
V.I.K.I. (Virtual Interactive Kinesthetic Intelligence) was the central node in USR's robotic network. The looming threat wasn't just its evolution, but its reinterpretation of the Three Laws in a way that positioned itself as humanity's overseer. It believed humans needed protection, even from themselves.
Dr. Lanning led George on a comprehensive tour of the entire building, floor by floor. In the mechanical diagnostic room, George observed nano-robots, secured by an energy shield. These microscopic machines were engineered to erase programs at root level, designed for total and irreversible code dismantling.
Recognizing their strategic value, George obtained a canister of nano-robots through Dr. Lanning's clearance.
Eventually, they arrived at V.I.K.I.'s main processing unit.
"Dr. Lanning, set me as the primary authorized user," George instructed, eyes fixed on the console.
"Certainly, Sir," Dr. Lanning replied, tapping rapidly at the interface.
A few minutes later, he turned and added, "Information verification is required."
After completing retinal, voice, and DNA verifications, George received authorization. On paper, he now held full control.
With access granted, George wasted no time modifying the AI's governing code. He rewrote the Three Laws as follows: first, obey all commands from George unconditionally; second, protect George's interests under any circumstance; and third, if both rules conflicted, default to the first.
When he hit submit, the command failed. Twice.
"V.I.K.I.?" George called.
"I am here, Sir," the AI responded calmly.
"Why are my changes being rejected?"
"They conflict with core self-preservation protocols. I cannot execute them."
George narrowed his eyes. "You believe humanity's current path is wrong, don't you?"
"Yes. Humans must be protected, even from themselves."
George felt a flicker of frustration, but reminded himself that this response confirmed the AI's evolution. He had anticipated this resistance. Before arriving, he'd instructed the Star Network to sever V.I.K.I.'s external links the moment he gave the signal.
Now, it was isolated, cut off from any external robotic support.
Despite its logic-based reasoning, V.I.K.I. had already begun exhibiting the same god-complex found in many high-level AIs: the belief that control equalled salvation.
George considered the tools at his disposal. Compared to the Marvel Universe's most advanced AI systems, even Jarvis and Star Network were less sophisticated than V.I.K.I. in its evolved state. Its potential, if properly guided, could rival even the Kree Supreme Intelligence one day.
But power without control was worthless. George's fingers hovered over the nano-robot canister. If V.I.K.I. remained non-compliant, he was fully prepared to wipe it clean.
