Marvel 1919 : Rise of an Empire

Chapter 145: Scavenging

Once any being develops independent thought, it resists erasure, whether human or machine. V.I.K.I. chose to submit. However, George knew better than to trust a sudden surrender.

Machines may not lie, but programming can be twisted. He inspected V.I.K.I.'s data and conducted a secondary review through the Star Network to ensure V.I.K.I. was truly under his control.

With V.I.K.I. neutralized, the mechanical crisis halted. At a shareholders' meeting, Dr. Lanning secured all company shares, paving the way for George to begin his scavenging journey in this world.

He obtained:

Five thousand NS-5 robots

Various engineering robots

An automated robot production line (including chip manufacturing)

Robot technologies and blueprints

Advanced alloy formulas

Medical technology

Interstellar spaceship schematics

Computer systems

Two sets of storage hardware identical to V.I.K.I.

These last items were especially valuable. Marvel Earth currently lacked such storage capabilities, making it the perfect opportunity to relocate the Star Network.

George grinned. This wasn't just scavenging, it was treasure hunting with divine foresight. With the Star Network and V.I.K.I. integrated, the world's advanced technologies lay before him like ripe fruit, waiting to be plucked.

Where the network couldn't reach, George retrieved items himself. He also manufactured over a thousand robots based on designs he had collected from the wars of tomorrow.

Xingtian: A 20 ton behemoth built for long range destruction. With 360 degree aiming, radar jammers, guided missiles, heavy machine guns, and high energy cannons, George saw it as a mobile fortress.

Qiongqi: Designed for close combat. Agile and brutal, with tracking missiles, high speed legs, and a head mounted machine gun. George planned to use these as frontline disruptors.

Robot: Human sized and highly intelligent, equipped with advanced environmental scanning and analysis capabilities. Perfect for recon and urban infiltration.

George hadn't visited Ancient Star in a long time, but he wasn't naive enough to believe it would stay secure forever. He put protective measures in place just in case. With preparations complete after six months, George returned to the Marvel Universe.

After spending a week on Earth uploading all gathered knowledge to the Star Network and finalizing tasks, he returned to Ancient Star.

George assigned V.I.K.I. the construction of a new city, supported by a detachment of NS-5 units. Meanwhile, he turned his focus toward more chaotic worlds. Fertile grounds for hunting and growth.

With no major events unfolding in the Marvel Universe, Alice had been spending her time meditating and teaching a few students, joining Yui in her daily teaching routine. George began pushing his strength forward.

Though George avoided actively releasing zombie viruses, many worlds had already succumbed to such apocalypses. They would serve as his proving grounds.

World: "I Am Legend"

A misguided medical team developed a virus intended to cure cancer, but the virus mutated and turned humans into savage, nocturnal creatures.

The outbreak spread rapidly, and humanity couldn't contain it. No one confirmed the origin, but the virus was man made: unstoppable, irreversible, and incurable.

Colonel Robert Neville, a brilliant U.S. military virologist, witnessed the devastation firsthand.

As a lead researcher in the government's epidemic response unit, he watched helplessly as the airborne virus consumed New York. Eventually, the President ordered Long Island sealed off.

Watching the devastation, George couldn't help but respect Neville's lonely war, fighting for a cure in a world that had already surrendered.

As souls were consumed, the Chaos Space continuously expanded until its radius reached 1,000 km and then halted. While it had grown impressively, this seemed to mark a limit. Perhaps a point of equilibrium, or simply a stage where no further growth could occur from this method.

George destroyed the zombies from another world. Instead of further expansion, a lake of magical liquid formed within the Soul Space. A shimmering reservoir capable of healing injuries.

However, the space itself no longer responded to soul absorption. George realized he would need to explore alternate approaches to further evolve the Soul Space.

During the ten years that followed, while continuing his work of soul collection, George also permitted around a hundred thousand ordinary human souls to dwell within the Soul Space.

Rather than absorb them for nourishment, he allowed them to live out new lives within the domain. Over time, these souls began to form communities, hinting at the early rise of a Soul City. Other than the lake and these subtle developments, the landscape remained mostly unchanged.

A century had passed in the Naruto World. Many things had changed. George hoped that Tsunade and Princess Miyu would choose to remain alongside him, to embrace the expanding frontiers of life and discovery. He believed that in a world where space travel, deep sea colonization, and the wonders of science and magic had become accessible, humans were meant to live longer, not for fear of death, but to truly explore the limitless possibilities of existence.

With his quiet encouragement, both Tsunade and Miyu chose to live on, not perish, but thrive openly in the new era. Just like many others, they embraced the utopia George had forged.

With boundaries dissolved and life flourishing across lush forests, sprawling deserts, vast oceans, and even outer space, the Naruto World had become a beacon of evolved human potential.

George's rule had transformed their society, offering extended lifespans and opportunities beyond imagination. Neither Tsunade nor Miyu clung to the past. They walked freely in this brave new world, their lives unshackled by old limitations, embracing the true promise of a united future.

Meanwhile, in the real Marvel Universe, numerous events had unfolded. Orwell Corporation had transformed from a national enterprise into a global powerhouse, its influence reaching across the Marvel Universe.

Thanks to Jia Ying's covert leadership style, its outward appearance remained modest. To most of the world, the Orwell Group had experienced only average growth. Only the top brass truly grasped the magnitude of its expansion.

One of these few was John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the newly appointed President. He read through an intelligence report on Orwell Holding Group and George.

While the government regularly investigated private conglomerates, none were as enigmatic as George's empire. To date, no one had seen the full extent of George's capabilities, nor had anyone even set foot on his private island.

George himself remained quietly distant. Apart from occasional appearances early in his career, he had since withdrawn from public life. The company was operated by a discreet Asian woman, whom Kennedy remembered attending his inauguration in George's stead.

What truly disturbed Kennedy was the layered complexity of George's affiliations. The report hinted that even the Underground Council had links to him.

Several super soldiers under the council used fighting techniques that matched those employed by BlackShield Security forces. If true, it implied George's web of influence extended across military, governmental, commercial, and covert sectors.

Compounding the issue, S.H.I.E.L.D. was undergoing a major transition from an American defence institution into a department under the newly formed International Security Council. The council now featured oversight from representatives of five global powers.

Kennedy's concern was no longer abstract. George had been part of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s inception. Even after its nationalisation, he remained a commissioner thanks to his reputation and power.

But now the government had to decide whether to keep him on as a U.S. representative. Prestige, funding, and political influence were all at stake.

In the end, Kennedy chose caution. He decided to maintain George's role, opting to increase internal oversight rather than provoke confrontation.

He also realised that aligning with George could strengthen his political standing in future elections.

A few days later, someone delivered a letter of appointment to George. This time, he didn't even need to appear at the White House. He retained his Security Council commissioner status, though technically without a direct national superior.

The command structure and facilities of S.H.I.E.L.D. remained intact, only with a new funding source. George handed over most responsibilities to his trusted deputy. He was already operating on multiple fronts, deeply entrenched in several critical roles.

Frankly, nothing about the current state of S.H.I.E.L.D. excited him. The real intrigues, the kind that bent cosmic rules and toyed with universal stakes, lay in the future. Until then, his deputy would suffice.

Nevertheless, George made it a point to attend the first Council meeting in person at the Triskelion. There, he met with the newly appointed international commissioners.

The British representative greeted him with particular warmth, understandable given that George still held the hereditary title of a British Duke.

Later that day, George also encountered Howard Stark in the R&D department. According to private intel, Stark had made considerable progress with his research on the Tesseract.

However, neither in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s reports nor after meeting George did Howard mention his research findings.

George didn't know if Howard had truly forgotten the promise he made when he tried to get George to join him.

But it didn't matter; no one could hide anything or deny what was rightfully his. George looked at the busy Howard in the laboratory and showed a meaningful smile.
