Chapter 278: Balancing Work and Rest
Following their farewell to the Eternal Deity, Wang Yang and the Ancient One returned to Kamar-Taj. Wang Yang had gained significantly from this experience, not only acquiring the power of the universe but also earning its recognition, making him much more robust than before.
"Wang Yang, you must be cautious from now on. Even though you possess the power to alter planets, you should not act recklessly," the Ancient One advised earnestly. Despite Wang Yang's qualitative leap in power, his newfound abilities required careful handling.
"Don't worry, Supreme Sorcerer. I promise I won't act recklessly," Wang Yang assured her with a smile before leaving.
Noticing that Thor had already departed, likely concerned about changes in Asgard and knowing his presence wouldn't be of much help here, Wang Yang entered the library. He needed to digest the Asgardian magic and the knowledge about cosmic power he had acquired.
The Ancient One, watching Wang Yang leave, simply nodded. She returned to her seat and noticed a figure materializing in the air before her.
"Great Eternal Deity? Is there something else you need?" the Ancient One asked, surprised by Eternity's return.
"I remembered something I forgot to mention," Eternity said, his expression serious.
The Ancient One, sensing the importance of his message, responded respectfully, "Please, go ahead, Great Eternal Deity."
Eternity didn't beat around the bush. "Although I don't know your apprentice well, I'm certain he now possesses divine power. You need to be vigilant and ensure he doesn't lose his humanity. For us, born as deities, we lack these human emotions, so it isn't an issue. But for mortals, losing their humanity can turn them into terrifying beings."
The Ancient One understood the gravity of Eternity's words. For deities, lacking human emotions meant they could pursue their goals without hesitation, whether it involved killing or other drastic actions. However, for humans, losing their humanity could transform a good person into a villain.
With Wang Yang's immense power, if he lost his humanity, not even the five deities could quickly stop him. This was why Eternity spoke with such urgency.
"I understand," the Ancient One said solemnly.
Eternity's concern was that if Wang Yang's humanity eroded, he would no longer be considered human. Though gaining divine power might inevitably lead to losing humanity, the Ancient One resolved to monitor Wang Yang closely to prevent him from straying too far.
...
In the following months, Wang Yang immersed himself in studying magic within the library. Knowledge of Asgardian magic and cosmic power required thorough understanding. Fortunately, with his immense power, he no longer needed sleep and could study continuously.
One day, as Wang Yang continued his research, the Ancient One entered the library.
"Wang, is Wang Yang still here studying magic?" she asked, turning to Wong.
Wong, who had been overseeing the library, nodded and pointed to a corner where Wang Yang was still engrossed in his books.
"How long has it been?" the Ancient One asked, her concern growing. Eternity's warning about Wang Yang's potential loss of humanity weighed heavily on her mind.
"About two and a half months," Wong replied after some thought, marveling at Wang Yang's dedication. Most sorcerers couldn't sustain such intense study without eating or sleeping.
The Ancient One, worried that Wang Yang's relentless pursuit of magic might erode his humanity, walked over to him. She found him deeply engrossed in his books.
"Wang Yang," she called softly.
Wang Yang looked up, surprised to see the Ancient One. "Supreme Sorcerer, is something wrong?"
"You've been in the library for two and a half months. Don't you think it's time for a break?" the Ancient One asked her tone firm yet concerned.
"For a sorcerer, two and a half months isn't that long," Wang Yang replied, puzzled by her concern.
"It's not about the time," the Ancient One explained. "Eternity warned me that while you've gained divine power, you risk losing your humanity if you continue like this. You could become a heartless being, no longer the Wang Yang we know."
The Ancient One's words took aback Wang Yang. He hadn't considered the long-term implications of his relentless study. While he felt fine now, he realized that he could lose touch with his humanity over time.
"You might not feel it now, but what about in ten, twenty, or a hundred years? Without breaks and human experiences, you might become a different person," the Ancient One continued. "Even deities understand the importance of maintaining some connection to their origins."
Wang Yang nodded, acknowledging the Ancient One's wisdom. He thought of Doctor Strange in the multiverse, who had become obsessed and lost his humanity. He didn't want to follow the same path.
"You're right, Supreme Sorcerer. I'll make sure to balance work and rest," Wang Yang promised, closing his books and stepping back from his intense study.
The Ancient One smiled, relieved. "Good. Remember, it's important to stay grounded and maintain your humanity."
With that, Wang Yang resolved to take regular breaks and stay connected to the world around him, ensuring that he didn't lose himself in his quest for power.
