Chapter 2: Battle for New York
I wasn't lying when I said The Thing, the literal man of rocks was standing over the now crushed form of the alien.
"Hey, are you alright?" Ben Grimm asked in his gravelly voice, which unfortunately my sister screamed at. Even if he and his group have been around as the Fantastic Four, he's still kinda scary to look at.
"Yeah! Yeah, thanks man, if you weren't here, then we-"
"Don't mention it, I've gotta go, but get out of here and stay of sight." He said with a slight smile, glad I appreciated him I guess. Man being a stack of pebbles really has to be hard.
"Alright come on, we've gotta get out of here." I say to my sister getting up, ignoring the pain in my ankle as adrenaline was now pumping way to hard to really feel it.
"Are we g-going to be okay?" She asked, voice breaking between hiccups from tears.
"Hey, I've got you and you got me. Together, we'll be fine, alright? Now come on." I say, putting on strong front, hoping she didn't notice sweat rolling down my face, or somehow the pounding drum in my chest right now.
"Y-yeah, okay." She said quietly, to which I promptly start running again with my sister at my side now, I can't run and carry her with a sprained ankle, unfortunately. But before we go, I twist off the gun from the aliens arm, quickly figuring out how it works I'm surprised by the recoil, or rather the lack thereof. Getting down the last two remaining blocks while ignoring the chaos around, we reach the subway to see it caved in up to the stairs the stairs.
"Goddamnit!" I yell before we continued on, but eventually the skies were covered with the Chitauri, and seeing no choice I barrel into the closest building, sister following, which just so happens to be a bank. Reaching the lobby, I see a bunch of fellow survivors, before everyone starts backing up from my direction.
Confused from the looks of terror on their face, I turn to see a Chitauri going to grab my sister, to which I promptly raise my gun and fire off a couple rounds before double tapping for good measure. But then the windows above break as more of those space gooners come in, quickly raising their guns at us, so I throw mine to the side, knowing there wasn't much I could do. I'm not a trained marksman to take all of them out in less than 3 seconds for fucksake.
Though I'm surprised to see them not gunning us down, which if they did I'd use my body to cover Jessie, one of them suddenly reaches down to their hip before promptly grabbing something that looked almost like a lighter, or old whiskey flask used in war, and taps a button causing it to light up.
Before he gets to throw it at us though, a shield flies at the alien, knocking the energy grenade out of his hands, unfortunately for me, it comes right at me, with my sister right next to me.
Letting muscle memory built up over years kick in, I catch it before running straight to the front door, as the beeps from it grows faster and the light flickering more. I get outside and I throw it as high up as I can before ducking back in the building, the shockwave still hits me though as I'm knocked to the floor, blacking out. I catch bits and pieces of my surroundings as my head feels weightless, no pain or wringing, more like my conscious being wrapped in a sound proof cloud, with no clue of what's happening.
Suddenly I'm pulled back to reality as The Captain America looms over me.
"You okay kid?" He asks, hand on my shoulder kneeling, shield in his other hand.
"Y-yeah, dizzy... where's my sister?" I ask, before she's suddenly all I can see.
"You're ok, right? Right, Flash?!" She almost screams in my face, her own filled with terror.
"Of course I'm good! I've taken harder hits." I say lightheartedly, putting on the best grin I could, pushing her back a little, but from of reaction from her, it probably wasn't that great, Cap seemed to appreciate my humor though.
"That was very brave of you kid, we need more people like you in the world. But that was also very dangerous, so let the professionals take over now, we got you." He says with a smile. To which I finally notice the cops around, bringing people out the bank to somewhere probably safe. Then he stands up and starts walking away, though I'm able to hear what he says.
"Tony we've got civilians coming out of the xxx bank, get Banner and the others to keep those aliens out of this street going uptown as we evacuate them." And that's all I hear as his voice fades out into the distance.
"Sir are you able to walk?" A officer suddenly comes up and asks me.
"Yeah, I can." I respond, to which he stretches his hand out, which I take and use his body as leverage to pull myself up.
"Come on squirt, let's get out of here." I say offering her my hand, which she takes as we walk out.
"Hey, so are we going to be safe now?" She asks, warily looking around at the people.
"Yeah, we're ok now. We should hurry up and leave though." I say dragging her along before she suddenly lets go.
"Wait! My snake is gone!" She suddenly says before running off and disappearing into the crowd.
"Wait! Jessie!" I yell after her, now sprinting where she went off too, some cops tried stopping me but years in football shown through as I went past and through them.
"Jessie!" I yell out, moving through crowd back to where we first came from, and escaping the sea of people, I run down the blocks to see her crouched on the ground picking up something, now smiling at me with the hair pin in her hands.
Not slowing down though, I start getting close as suddenly a leviathan barrels through the building above her, knocking it down towards her. My body at this point is aching, an unknown amount of time now operating at max efficiency, adrenaline constantly pumping from the fight or flight response, but I didn't slow down, I pick her up, even as my ankle tries to stop me, and keep going. Even as the shadows around seem to grow bigger, I keep going, reaching for what was almost like the end of the tunnel, the only space where shadows didn't loom over, and I dive for it. I let my body tank the concrete floor for my sister, as my head knocks against the floor, causing me to black out again.
The next thing I know, there's a rumbling, as I suddenly feel like a weight was released my legs.
"Oh my god! Fla- Citizen!" The one and only, Spectacular Spider-Man exclaims, till I suddenly feel myself propped up on something.
"Don't worry, I'll get you two to safet-"
"*cough*cough*" I suddenly interrupt him, spitting up blood, as I get the chance to take in my surroundings, and feel a pain in my side going to my core.
"Shit." I simply state, seeing the part of rebar going into my side.
"Hey! It'll be alright! Just stay with me!" Peter says, going to try and pick me up, to which I stop him.
"Hey, I thought you were the*cough*cough* the science nerd. You and I both know I've got minutes at best Peter." i told him as I feel blood, slowly but surely seeping into my lungs.
"Peter? Hehe, who's Peter? I don't"
"Hey drop the act man, it was probably the most obvious shit ever.*cough*cough" I cut him off, to which he suddenly slumps to his knees, and pulls his mask off. His face was filled grief and regret.
"Hey man, maybe if I web the wound, It'll"
"It's internal! Pete, just, let me say what I gotta say." I cut him off again, with some more coughs, at this point Jessie stirred awake, taking in the area, and then my wound.
"Wait! Wait! No! You're fine right?! Please be fine! Please be fine! Please!... It's my fault. It's-"
"Hey! stop it! Just,*cough* stop. I would die for you ten times over squirt, if it meant you lived, alright?" I say to her, though it does nothing to stop the tears rolling freely from her face, staining my shirt now.
"Listen Pete, I need a favor, man to man, best friend asking here, alright?" I ask him, to which he looks up at me again.
"Yeah, I'm listening." He answers sullenly.
"Take Jessie, and get her to safety."
"No! I'm not leaving you!" She responds between sobs, clinging to my chest harder.
"You said we'd get through this together! That together we'd be safe!... Here take my clip! You said it can heal, right?!" She says, backing up at the end to now offer me her hair clip, the one she want back for. The memories flash through my head, when my dad hit her for the first, and only time, I'd gotten her the clip to make her feel better, and hope asclepius would appreciate the gesture. She's never gone without the snake hair clip since.
"I'm sorry squirt, but I don't think asclepius is smiling on us today." I say with a chuckle, before breaking in a coughing fit, more blood than before coming out now.
"Ok listen. Peter, I need you to get her out of here, ok? And as for a final piece of advice, if you and MJ ever break up, do not get close to the snow bunny. Save yourself the heartache. And also consider wearing armor, at least around your head and neck, so Mr.Tentacles can't pull a professor baldy." I finish saying with chuckle, though I could tell he didn't understand much, he didn't question me, only biting his lip in frustration seemingly.
"As for you squirt." I start, turning to her, suppressing the cough rising as best as I could.
"Stay in school, get a good degree, but work for only Stark or Reed, or even open your own company, I know you've got it in you. And any boyfriends you get have to meet Peter, he'll judge them for me, alright?" I manage to get out straight before coughing a lot, and she only nodded, trying but failing to wipe her tears away.
"You guys gotta get out of here, whatever was distracting those aliens before is gone." I state, noticing the increased Chitauri presence.
"No! No! NO! LET ME GO!" Jessie screams out, trying to get out of Peter's one handed grasp as he slides on the mask with the other.
"Agh, uh, last thing, these things, even though alien, aren't actually alive, Pete. Take out the mothership, and they all shut down, but that also means you can go all out." I bring up, hoping that might speed up the ending of this whole Battle for New York, and giving Peter a way to vent, if his shaking fist was any indicator of mental state right now.
Watching him swing off gave me and odd sense of peace, even as I'm here dying, I at least know that Jessie will be safe.
"Whatever god brought me to this world, if it was Stan Lee or some other other entity, I thank you for this second chance at life, but couldn't you have given me a power at least?" I ask myself more than anyone really, closing my ears and slouching back, but then I find myself, floating?
"Ah, but you should be grateful to him." I hear a women suddenly, caressing my head, and though I'm floating and can see nothing, it seemed like my soul had an instinctual reaction to whoever this was.
"For yet I, even Death, can't claim you, but that'll change eventually." She said, giggling at the end, before I suddenly gasp, finding myself in a building, a group around me.
"And here is our revolutionary work of integrating machine with man, for those missing limbs, either through birth, war, or surgery, here at Oscorp we-"
...'Oscorp?' I question myself, before my surroundings seem to fade away at the one thought invading my head.
"Return by-"
