Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Yukinoshita Yukino Hatches a Cat
Staring at the rock-hard egg in her hand was it an ostrich's? Yukino hesitated to call animal control. This looked nothing like an ostrich egg. More like some rare creature's egg.
The guy Yoru had attempted to boil it to explosion, yet it was totally unharmed. Naturally, she barred him from entering her space again.
She had only helped boil it out of pity, worried he'd mess with the neighbors. He'd promised to share half and teased that eating it would make her more beautiful maybe even fill out her flat-chested figure. Yukino's face went black at the thought.
"What a strange weirdo," she muttered. She'd overheard his conversation with the landlord at the door. Then she filled the pot with plain water and set it to boil.
After returning to the sofa to watch TV, she suddenly heard movement in the kitchen. Something alive seemed stirring in the pot, along with faint noises. Yukino's face fell this was a living creature suffering in scalding water.
She rushed over and shut off the heat, lunging to open the lid but burned her hand, having forgotten the oven glove. A sharp hiss escaped her lips.
Inside, the egg was thrashing. Then it jumped out bouncing and rolling on the floor before lying still. Dead?
Guilt washed over her. In a way, she felt responsible. Clenching her teeth, she resolved not to forgive that guy if anything happened.
She reached for the egg, now glistening. Surprisingly cool maybe it had cooled quickly after boiling.
Then it wobbled.
"Crack… crack…"
Fine fissures crawled across the shell. Alive! A spark of relief flickered in Yukino's heart something was hatching.
She watched closely as the cracks widened, a soft white glow emerging like something out of an anime about magical creatures being born.
"Meow~" A cat's cry! The light dimmed and Yukino shielded her eyes.
The shell burst open, revealing a tiny creature with silvery-white fur and gleaming eyes. It looked like a kitten no, more like a cat spirit.
"So… adorable…" Yukino whispered, nearly hypnotized.
The kitten opened its mouth and began eating the eggshell so unbelievably cute. Yukino gently stroked its fluffy head and let out a blissful sigh. So this was how eggs hatched cats!
"Oviparous mammals?" She stared, her understanding of biology utterly shattered.
"Meow… meow~" It gazed at her with a voice that melted her heart.
"Meow~" Yukino couldn't resist. She repeated the meow softly, fully enchanted.
The kitten wobbled nearer and nuzzled her leg with its head.
"Oh, wait, little one." She hurried to the fridge for goat's milk, poured it into a small bowl, and set it before the kitten. It licked but didn't drink.
"Don't like it?" She fetched some cat food, but still nothing. Each refusal made the kitten weaker, its lustrous fur losing its shine. Panic struck Yukino she had to get it to an animal hospital.
She scooped the fragile kitten into her arms and rushed out.
But..
"Meow~~~" The kitten suddenly bucked, jumped from her arms, stumbled in apparent pain, and tottered toward the apartment across the hall Yoru's place.
Yukino froze. That adorable kitten was from the mysterious egg Yoru had brought! Her face turned icy, he almost boiled this creature alive.
Inside Yoru's living room, the TV showed his favorite anime: a goddess lamenting the rise of an evil deity.
"Anime and reality are nothing alike every god I've met has been a bitch," he grumbled, his dark sense of humor spilling out.
Before he could continue, he sensed a freezing chill behind him. Looking up, he found Yukino's face grim and cold standing in the doorway.
"Did you finish boiling it? Wait, how did you get in?"
"You didn't lock the door!"
"No, I did."
Just then, a small white blur leapt onto the table, toppling Yoru's MP drink and starting to lap it up. It was the kitten.
Yukino, arms folded, watched as Yoru stared in horror.
