Chapter 5: Middle School Syndrome

Takashi stretched out a hand to Kazuomi, who was still sitting on the floor like a guy questioning his life choices. The impact had knocked him flat, and for a second, he looked more dazed than actually hurt. Meanwhile, the one responsible, some guy with an air of practiced indifference, was also sprawled out, propping himself up on one elbow as he dusted off his uniform with sharp, efficient movements.

Students streamed around them, barely paying attention, too caught up in their own conversations and destinations. The occasional glance was thrown their way, but as far as anyone else was concerned, this was just another minor hallway incident in the middle of an otherwise unremarkable school day.

Kazuomi grabbed Takashi's hand, pulling himself up with a sigh. He rolled his shoulder, wincing slightly. "Yeah… nothing broken. I think."

Takashi, on the other hand, was already shifting his focus to the guy who had caused the mess. The student in question was back on his feet now, adjusting his collar with a look that was more irritation than concern. His dark eyes barely flickered in their direction before he let out a quiet, dismissive scoff.

"Hmph. Just watch your steps," he muttered, voice low and edged with boredom.

And with that, he turned on his heel and strode off, disappearing into the shifting crowd like some brooding comic rival who had better things to do than acknowledge mere mortals.

Takashi raised a brow. "Well, that was dramatic."

Kazuomi exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah, that's just how he is."

Takashi was about to let it go when something caught his eye—a faint glint against the dull hallway floor. Bending down, he picked up a small, silver locket. A delicate chain dangled from his fingers, and attached to it was a tiny, intricately detailed magical girl charm. The bright pink enamel stood out absurdly against the muted silver, an almost comical contrast to its previous owner's broody, too-cool-for-this-world vibe.

He turned the charm over between his fingers, studying the tiny details. "A magical girl charm? Huh. Not what I expected."

Then, for a brief moment, something clicked in his mind—a distant memory from his past life. The kind he'd rather not remember.

Ah, shit.

A cough escaped him, more out of reflex than anything, as he quickly masked whatever embarrassment threatened to surface.

Kazuomi smirked, folding his arms. "Oh, I'm not even surprised."

Takashi shot him a look. "You aren't?"

Kazuomi tilted his head, watching the crowd where the guy had vanished. "Dude, do you seriously not know him? That's Taki Minase. He's been rocking that middle-school-grade magic obsession for years. Guy probably dreams in spell chants."

Takashi flicked the charm, watching it spin lazily. "Oh? That rare, huh?"

"Yeah, and he doesn't even try to hide it. It's like… his whole thing."

"I kinda respect the dedication."

Kazuomi shook his head. "Man, you'd get along with some weird people."

"First of all, rude." Takashi tossed the locket lightly in the air before catching it. "Second, do we return this?"

He didn't actually care about the locket, but he also didn't want to be accused of stealing a magical girl charm. That just wasn't the kind of reputation he needed floating around.

Kazuomi shrugged. "Sure, if you can even get a hold of him. Guy's got main character energy, always lost in his own world."

Takashi glanced at the locket again, its chain slipping between his fingers like fine-threaded silk. Something about the name Minase nagged at him, an itch in the back of his mind that refused to settle.

"Where's he usually lurking?" he asked.

"Library sometimes. Rooftop, maybe. Otherwise, he just kinda… exists." Kazuomi stuffed his hands into his pockets, giving the locket one last glance before shaking his head. "Honestly? He probably won't even notice it's gone."

Takashi pocketed it. "Cool. I'll give it back when I run into him. No rush."

The thought lingered for a moment longer than it should have, but Takashi shook it off.

If it was important, he'd figure it out later.

For now, he just wanted to go home. After everything today, he needed a long rest. His body wasn't sore, but his mind felt stretched thin, too much to process, too many things piling up.

With a sigh, he adjusted his bag over his shoulder and started walking.
