Chapter 13: The Sword
After Minato left, Yue remained alone at the training ground, honing his mastery of the three Wind Release jutsu. He practiced until it was time for lunch, but Minato still hadn't returned. Rather than waiting, Yue simply headed home by himself.
After all, he had never made Kushina wait for him to start a meal. If he was late, he knew she would worry.
By the time Minato returned to the training ground, Yue was already gone. However, he noticed a wooden plank left in a conspicuous spot—it was a message from Yue, informing him that he had gone home.
"This kid is really thoughtful…"
Although Yue's personality was a bit cold, he was very independent, sparing them much worry. This reassured Minato.
With that thought, Minato hurried home as well.
"I'm back."
As usual, Yue placed the Longquan Sword in its designated spot, washed his hands, tidied his clothes, then climbed onto a stool, waiting for the meal to begin.
"Where's Little Sunshine?"
Kushina set the dishes on the table and asked upon seeing only Yue return.
"He went to Mount Myoboku. Not sure if he'll be back for lunch."
"How was training today, Yue? Summoning Jutsu should be easy for you, right?"
"I failed."
"Failed? Why?"
Kushina was confused. Minato had a great relationship with Mount Myoboku, and the Summoning Jutsu wasn't particularly difficult. Given Yue's talent, there shouldn't have been any problems.
"I couldn't leave my name on the contract scroll. I don't know why."
"I see… No wonder Little Sunshine went to Mount Myoboku. He's probably looking for the reason. Don't be discouraged, Yue."
"Mm."
Their conversation was simple, as usual—Kushina asked, and Yue answered.
Sometimes, Kushina would ask him to share something happy that happened during the day, but Yue never found anything particularly joyful. He was interested in learning new jutsu, but his parents always dismissed his requests, saying he was too young…
"Sorry, I'm a bit late."
Minato appeared in the living room using the Flying Thunder God Technique. Luckily, both Kushina and Yue were already used to his sudden arrivals, so neither reacted much.
"So, what's the reason, Little Sunshine?"
"The Great Toad Sage said that Yue isn't compatible." Minato hesitated slightly as he answered, likely afraid of discouraging Yue.
"It's fine, Father. Who is this 'Great Sage' you're talking about?"
Hearing Minato mention a sage piqued Yue's interest. Anything related to gods or immortals fascinated him.
"The Great Sage is the founder of Mount Myoboku. According to legend, it has lived for thousands of years and can even predict the future."
Yue didn't believe that at all. People also claimed Peng Zu lived for 800 years.
The people of the ninja world had no concept of proper historical records—everything was passed down by word of mouth. For example, Uchiha Madara, who co-founded Konoha with Senju Hashirama—there was barely any documentation about him. The only thing Yue could find was that he was labeled a villain…
As for the so-called ability to foresee the future, Yue had encountered plenty of frauds claiming the same thing before.
However, if what Minato said was true, and the Great Sage really did create Mount Myoboku, then it must have some merit—after all, it was powerful enough to construct an independent space.
"Yue, I'll definitely find you a powerful summoning contract in the future."
Seeing Yue deep in thought, Minato assumed he was upset and quickly reassured him.
"It's really fine, Father. But can you give me some sword techniques? I feel like I've already mastered the basics and don't need to keep repeating them."
Ever since Yue received the Longquan Sword, he had been practicing basic sword movements—drawing, swinging, thrusting, slashing, and sheathing. But now, he felt ready to move on to actual techniques.
"After lunch, I'll copy some Konoha-style sword techniques for you. Be careful not to hurt yourself."
"Got it."
After the meal, Yue didn't rush out. He waited for Minato to finish copying the scroll, then accepted it with a polite thank you before dragging the Longquan Sword to the training ground.
The sword was quite heavy, but Yue's current strength allowed him to wield it single-handedly with ease. However, it was so long that, when upright, it reached his chin—carrying it normally would look awkward, so he figured dragging it along the ground looked better.
Upon reaching his destination, Yue unrolled the scroll and read through it carefully. After pondering for a bit, he found the techniques not too difficult and immediately began training.
Konoha-style sword techniques fell under Konoha's general taijutsu category. Any ninja who completed a few C-rank missions could exchange contribution points to learn them. They were basic techniques, commonly available.
However, they were still quite practical—decent in combat, easy to learn, and effective.
Thus, Yue continued practicing, improving his proficiency and understanding of the techniques.
After more than two hours of non-stop training, Yue finally halted—not to rest, but because he was staring blankly at his sword.
"What just happened? Did my chakra… attach to the blade?"
Perhaps due to exhaustion, his chakra control had momentarily slipped. As he swung his sword, a trace of chakra leaked from his palm.
But instead of dissipating into the air as usual, Yue keenly noticed that the chakra seemed to flow through his hand and into the sword.
He recalled reading about a type of metal that could conduct chakra—some wealthy ninjas even crafted weapons from it to enhance their combat ability.
Thinking of this, Yue paused his training and focused on the Longquan Sword, wanting to test if it was one of those rare chakra-conducting weapons.
He gathered chakra in his right hand, but nothing happened.
Then, he tried channeling it directly into the hilt—still no reaction.
"Am I using the wrong method, or was it just an illusion?"
Closing his eyes, Yue carefully recalled the sensation from earlier. He didn't believe it was a hallucination—his method must be incorrect. He concentrated, trying to replicate his previous state.
"This Konoha-style sword technique doesn't rely purely on physical strength. It requires chakra to unleash its full power. And my chakra…"
At that moment, Yue remembered his chakra attributes. Minato had once tested him—he possessed four chakra natures, with Wind Release being the strongest, likely due to his frequent practice of cutting leaves with chakra.
"Did I unconsciously convert my chakra to Wind Release just now?"
With that realization, Yue immediately tested his theory. He transformed all his chakra into Wind Release and concentrated it in his right hand.
Then, something amazing happened.
A visible air current swirled around the Longquan Sword, and Yue could feel a dense layer of chakra enveloping the entire blade.
Scanning the area, he found a tree with a trunk about the same width as his sword. Raising the Longquan Sword, he gave it a light swing.
The result… Yue felt as if he was slicing through tofu.
Previously, even with full force, he could only achieve similar results. But now, he had cut through the tree effortlessly with a mere flick of his wrist.
"Looks like I owe Gukei-senpai a favor now…"
