Chapter 166: Chapter 168
"What do you mean, 'clean up the mess'? It's exactly what it sounds like, Orochimaru. You've desecrated the dead and insulted the legacy of the Hokage. Now, I will put an end to this."
Hiruzen Sarutobi maintained his hand seals as he charged toward Orochimaru and the reanimated Hokage with a speed that belied his old age.
At this moment, Hiruzen felt like he had returned to his prime—back when his resolve was unshakable, and his heart burned with devotion to Konoha. He imagined the villagers outside, those who were cursing and condemning him, suddenly rallying behind him. In his mind, they stopped hurling insults and began cheering for their Hokage.
Of course, this was nothing more than his delusion.
The reality was far more brutal. The villagers, many of whom had lost loved ones during the Nine-Tails Rebellion, were unmoved by Hiruzen's apparent self-sacrifice. To them, this was not the redemption of a hero but the desperate final act of a man seeking to silence his critics.
Meanwhile, in the crowd outside the barrier, the cheers weren't for Hiruzen Sarutobi but for the First and Second Hokage, who had been reanimated and now faced him.
"No! Stop him!" Orochimaru's composed façade cracked as panic set in. He could see that Hiruzen was no longer holding back. The situation was becoming uncontrollable, and Orochimaru realized the danger too late.
At Orochimaru's command, the reanimated Hashirama Senju and Tobirama Senju moved to intercept Hiruzen, launching themselves at him with relentless precision.
Thus began the climactic battle between Konoha's past and its decaying present.
While chaos unfolded in the arena, Sasuke Uchiha faced off against Gaara, who was losing control of his Tailed Beast. Sakura, Aburame Shino, and the summoned ninja dog Pakkun had left to track Jiraiya, hoping for reinforcements. They soon found him with Tsunade, Naruto, Gekko Hayate, Shizune, and Chinatsu, riding on the back of a giant toad.
Hyuga Neji and Nara Shikamaru remained behind to fend off pursuing Sound Ninja, buying time for their allies.
Sakura ran to Naruto as soon as she saw him, tears streaming down her face. "Naruto! You have to help! Sasuke's in danger!"
Naruto blinked in confusion. "What happened to Sasuke?"
Jiraiya frowned. "What's going on in Konoha right now?"
Pakkun spoke up, his gruff voice calm yet urgent. "Orochimaru infiltrated Konoha disguised as the Fourth Kazekage and launched an attack with Sand Ninja. Kakashi uncovered the plan, and Sunagakure has since withdrawn, but Sasuke still went after the red-haired Sand Ninja kid. Kakashi believes that kid is a Jinchuriki and warned he might go berserk. Sasuke's in over his head."
"And Neji and Shikamaru?" Jiraiya asked.
"They're covering Sakura and Shino's retreat, but they're heavily outnumbered by the Sound Ninja. They're in a critical situation. We need reinforcements immediately."
Hearing this, Tsunade's expression darkened. "What about Kirito?" she asked, her voice laced with tension.
Karin, Pakura, Shizune, and Chinatsu turned toward Pakkun, worry evident on their faces.
Pakkun shook his head. "We haven't seen Kirito anywhere. If he's in the village, he hasn't shown himself yet."
Relief washed over the group. If Kirito hadn't joined the fray, the situation might still be manageable.
Jiraiya sighed, his face lined with concern. "If Kirito hasn't interfered, there's a chance this battle will remain between Orochimaru and Hiruzen. For now, we must focus on handling the immediate threats."
He quickly divided the group. "I'll go save Neji and Shikamaru. Tsunade, you're the next Hokage. Head to the Chunin Exam arena with Hayate, Shizune, and the others to stabilize the situation. Naruto, follow Pakkun to retrieve Sasuke before it's too late."
The group dispersed, each heading toward their respective objectives.
By the time Tsunade arrived, the battle inside the Four Purple Flame Formation had reached its climax.
Hiruzen Sarutobi was using shadow clones to seal away the reanimated Hashirama and Tobirama. Meanwhile, his real body engaged Orochimaru directly. Despite his determination, Hiruzen was grievously wounded by Orochimaru's Kusanagi blade, which pierced him from behind. This left him unable to fully extract Orochimaru's soul, and the two were locked in a desperate tug-of-war.
Outside the barrier, the crowd, still under the influence of Kyoka Suigetsu, cheered for the reanimated Hokage, unaware of Hiruzen's struggle.
When Tsunade arrived, her commanding voice shattered the tension. "Grandfather! Second Grandfather!"
Hearing her voice, the reanimated Hokage briefly regained their consciousness. Their bodies, already deteriorating, began to crumble as their souls were drawn into the Shinigami's grasp.
Hashirama smiled faintly, his voice soft. "Tsunade... you've grown so much. I didn't expect to see you again."
Tobirama nodded solemnly. "Konoha is in your hands now."
With those final words, the two Hokage vanished, their souls sealed within the Shinigami.
Tsunade wiped her tears and surveyed the scene. Her eyes narrowed at the scattered photographs of Konoha's elders and their disgraceful deeds. "What happened here?" she demanded.
Kakashi approached and quickly explained everything—from Kirito's evidence exposing Orochimaru's plan to the current state of the battle.
As they spoke, Hiruzen Sarutobi prepared for one final act. He glared at Orochimaru and growled, "Orochimaru, I may not be able to take your life today, but I'll ensure you pay a heavy price. For someone obsessed with ninjutsu, there's no greater punishment than this—I'll take all your techniques away!"
"What?" Orochimaru's eyes widened in shock. "No, you can't!"
With the last of his strength, Hiruzen commanded the Shinigami to sever Orochimaru's soul. The spectral figure obeyed, slicing through Orochimaru's arms and rendering him unable to perform ninjutsu.
As Orochimaru howled in anguish, Kirito suddenly appeared. His voice dripped with amusement. "Oh my, what a touching master-student relationship. Such a dramatic end."
Hiruzen Sarutobi's eyes widened in disbelief. As his body slumped to the ground, his lifeless gaze remained fixed on Kirito, his expression frozen in shock and fury.
