"Damn those Iwa bastards… They ambushed us. Took us by surprise. If they hadn't outnumbered us, we wouldn't have gone down so easily," one of the captives muttered bitterly.
The dimly lit room reeked of dampness and iron—a jail, yet not an enemy's prison, but their own base's holding cells, now used against them.
Another voice spoke up, laced with frustration. "You're right. And the worst part? We're being held in the very cells meant for our enemies. It's humiliating."
Scattered around them, more captured Konoha shinobi sat in silence, their spirits dimmed. Some leaned against the cold walls, others simply stared at the floor, unwilling to speak. The weight of defeat hung over them like a suffocating fog.
Then—footsteps.
A steady, deliberate rhythm echoed down the stone staircase. In the oppressive quiet of the jail, each step was sharp, distinct.
The prisoners closest to the cell bars strained to see in the dim lighting, their eyes narrowing as a figure emerged from the shadows.
A man clad in a Konoha Jonin vest came into view, his forehead protector covering his left eye, a mane of white, spiky hair unmistakable even in the low light.
Their hearts skipped a beat.
Hatake Kakashi had arrived
One of the prisoners near the cell bars squinted through the dim light and gasped. "Hatake Kakashi? The Copy Ninja?"
The moment his words registered, another captive's eyes widened in realization. "We're saved! Haha, we're actually saved!"
A ripple of excitement spread through the prisoners, murmurs turning into exclamations. "Kakashi's here!" "We're getting out!"
Kakashi remained calm, his lone visible eye scanning the group. "Yes," he confirmed, his voice steady. "I'm Kakashi Hatake."
That simple acknowledgment sent a surge of hope through the captives, and soon, cheers erupted as more of them began shouting in relief.
But Kakashi knew better than to let excitement cloud their judgment. Raising his voice, he commanded, "Quiet! Everyone, listen up."
The room fell into silence, all eyes fixed on him.
"I know you're eager to get out of here, but escaping won't be easy. The base is surrounded by roughly two hundred Iwa-nin. If we want to make it out alive, we'll have to fight our way through."
His words sobered the prisoners instantly. The weight of their situation settled back onto their shoulders.
Then, from the crowd, a man stepped forward—a Special Jonin with a hardened expression. "I'm Tanaka. I'll fight." He paused, his gaze searching. "But… are you alone?"
A brief silence followed.
Kakashi's expression remained unreadable as he answered. "No."
A smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.
"I'm not alone."
Kakashi's visible eye remained steady as he responded, "No, I'm not alone. I have another Special Jonin with me."
He paused, then added, "Before you start to worry, let me make this clear—his strength surpasses even mine. Right now, he's outside, holding off the enemy so I can free you. Once we regroup, we'll all escape together."
Tanaka nodded, absorbing the information. "Understood. We'll fight with you. About thirty of us are still battle-ready. The rest… they're too injured to fight."
Kakashi's gaze darkened slightly. "So you mean we leave them here to die?"
Tanaka quickly shook his head. "No, that's not what I meant. What I'm saying is, if it were just us, we'd have a better chance of getting out. But from what we've seen, the enemy isn't trying to kill us—they've been keeping us alive. That means they likely want to negotiate with Konoha rather than execute us outright."
Kakashi studied him for a moment before giving a slow nod. "I get your point."
He then turned to address everyone in the prison, his voice firm and unwavering. "But our duty isn't just to fight—it's to protect. And that includes protecting ourselves. You'll understand soon enough."
His tone shifted, growing stronger, louder. "Anyone who can fight, follow me. We're getting out of here—and we're taking everyone with us. No one gets left behind."
His last words echoed through the chamber, carrying a weight of certainty.
The tension in the air shifted. Fear didn't disappear, but in its place, something stronger took root—hope.
And with that, the mission to escape truly began.
Kakashi led the thirty battle-ready Konoha shinobi out of the building, their steps quick but cautious.
The moment they stepped outside, they were met with a grim sight.
The ground was littered with corpses—thirty or more Iwa-nin, all dead. Some had kunai or shuriken embedded in their skulls, others had swords driven clean through their chests. Blood pooled across the battlefield, staining the earth a deep red.
And amidst the carnage, standing calmly, was a lone blond boy.
Inoiki Yamanaka.
His posture was relaxed, almost too casual for someone surrounded by so much death. His piercing blue eyes remained unreadable, his expression void of emotion.
Among the fallen was a Jonin from Iwagakure, his uniform soaked in blood, a sword stabbed straight through his chest. Somehow, despite the mortal wound, the man still clung to life—his trembling hand weakly pointing toward Inoiki.
His breath was ragged as he choked out, "Y-You… You're Inoiki Yamanaka… from Konoha, aren't you?"
Inoiki raised an eyebrow. "Oh? You know me? Am I that famous now?"
The Iwa Jonin coughed, blood spilling from his lips. "I… should have recognized you the moment I saw you… controlling weapons… without even touching them…"
That was all he managed to say.
A final breath escaped his lips, his body went slack, and his lifeless hand fell to the ground—his wide, unblinking eyes frozen in shock.
Silence followed.
Inoiki exhaled slowly. He wasn't disturbed by the bloodshed, but there was still a part of him—somewhere deep inside—that knew this would never be normal.
Still, he steeled himself.
This was the reality of a shinobi. A world where death came swiftly, and mercy was a rare thing.
Without hesitation, he turned toward Kakashi, who had just arrived with the freed Konoha nin.
"Stay here with these men and defend the base," Inoiki directed. "I'll handle the Jonin. The Genin and Chunin are up to you."
Kakashi studied him for a moment before nodding. "Understood."
With that, Inoiki turned away—heading straight for the battle with Jonins.
