Chapter 83
When Kaito heard Pain's words, his first thought was whether his previous influence on Nagato had been too strong, worsening the man's condition.
He even shot a questioning glance in Hikari's direction, as if asking what had happened while he was away.
But Hikari's only response was to lower her head and hurry into the village without a word. Even Konan kept a cold expression—neither of them wanted to waste another second talking to these two lunatics.
Yet, the moment they stepped through Amegakure's gate, the shabby gate in Kaito's vision suddenly flickered. In the blink of an eye, an ancient bronze gate shimmered into existence before his eyes.
"Holy shit!"
"There really is a mystic realm?!"
Konan: …
Uchiha Hikari: …
This time, Kaito couldn't hold back—a curse slipped out, prompting the two women who had just taken a few steps to quicken their pace even further.
Their brisk walk turned into a full-on jog.
"Yes." As the first discoverer, Pain puffed up with pride, his gaze sweeping over the mystic realm gate before them. The entire mystic realm gate stood fifty meters tall, its material resembling bronze yet faintly shimmering with an eerie glow on the surface.
Just from the appearance of this material, Nagato felt this mystic realm gate must be incredibly valuable.
Pain raised his hand, gently stroking the gate a few times before painstakingly scraping off some fragments from the metal surface, saying with utmost seriousness:
"The village's funding shortage might finally have a solution."
"Wait, what???"
Hearing this, Kaito was utterly baffled. He now suspected the figure before him wasn't the Deva Path of Pain but rather the money-obsessed Kakuzu.
"That's not the point at all!"
Kaito took a deep breath and pointed excitedly at the gate. "This is a mystic realm!!"
Meanwhile, Pain, who was still feeling the gate's frame, had already pulled out a black rod and was scraping it against the surface, producing a grating sound before replying indifferently:
"And?"
Taking another deep breath, Kaito suddenly realized that people from the Shinobi World couldn't comprehend the significance of this. He promptly pulled out the key from his backpack.
"Since it's a mystic realm..."
"Of course, the treasures inside..."
While patiently explaining the treasures within mystic realms, he searched the gate for a keyhole.
Elsewhere, on a rooftop observing these two patients, Konan and Hikari's expressions grew increasingly complex.
From their perspective, Pain was scraping a black rod against the old wooden gate of Amegakure, while Uchiha Kaito stood at the entrance, hands groping at thin air as if there were an invisible wall before him.
In short.
Neither of them was behaving like a normal person would.
After a long silence, Konan was the first to speak.
"You two..."
"When are you leaving Amegakure?"
Her voice was icy and urgent. Seeing Nagato's condition worsening by the day filled her with regret.
Had she known someone would turn Nagato into this state...
She would never have allowed this problematic Uchiha to join the Akatsuki Organization.
Now she could only hope this so-called 'Sect Ancestor' would take his junior away and stop corrupting their village's people.
"Anytime."
Uchiha Hikari's face darkened further as she spoke to Konan with little confidence. She thought the combination of these two was disastrous.
At least.
Before meeting Pain, Kaito had still resembled a normal person.
"But asking me probably won't help."
Hikari sighed heavily, pointing toward the pair. "Do you really think in this situation..."
"They'd separate?"
Konan looked back at the two, remained silent for a while, then exhaled deeply, roughly running her hands through her hair.
To make matters worse...
A crowd of villagers had already gathered to watch the spectacle at the gate.
"Let's just call them back..."
The Angel now feared that if this divine fool kept embarrassing himself at the village entrance, it might completely ruin the dignity they'd built over years.
"You... you go."
The prideful Uchiha Hikari couldn't bring herself to retrieve them before so many onlookers, avoiding Konan's gaze as she spoke.
"Mystic realm!"
Kaito's booming voice rang out jarringly at the gate. Seeing the key inserted into the nonexistent door, he turned and shouted again:
"Amegakure!"Upon shouting these words, the entrance to the Secret Realm before him instantly twisted and vanished, revealing the dilapidated gate of Amegakure once more.
"A world between reality and illusion?"
"Interesting!"
Pain had also figured out the correct way to use it and stood to the side, repeating the process several times. The two of them were having a blast.
Even when they noticed villagers whispering about them, neither felt the slightest bit awkward.
"Let's go in and take a look."
Having grasped the mechanics of the Secret Realm, he immediately pushed open the gate and prepared to step inside.
Beyond the Mystic Realm gate stretched an endless primeval forest, with the occasional roar of beasts echoing in the distance. Faced with this unknown world, the two at the entrance were momentarily overwhelmed with excitement.
But just as Kaito was about to step through, Pain suddenly grabbed him. "Wait."
"Charging in recklessly... could be dangerous."
After Kaito's half-hour-long explanation, Nagato had learned that the Secret Realm contained all sorts of miraculous herbs—not only immensely beneficial for enhancing strength but even capable of reviving the dead.
Of course, where such treasures existed, there were bound to be ferocious beasts as well, and Nagato was deeply wary of them.
"I'll call for some backup."
"That makes sense. Better to be safe."
Konan & Hikari: "..."
The two of them, who had somehow already arrived behind the pair, were already uncomfortable under the villagers' scrutiny. Now, hearing these two discussing something dangerous just to enter a village...
Hikari really hadn't wanted to come, but Konan had insisted on dragging her along, claiming it was because "one person couldn't possibly handle two patients."
In Hikari's opinion...
Konan just wanted her to share the embarrassment.
Now, standing behind Kaito and Pain, the two had disguised themselves, even wearing masks over their faces.
"Huh? Why are you two back?"
Kaito turned and noticed the pair behind him. Without waiting for Hikari to speak, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her to stand before the gate.
"See this gate?"
He pointed at the worn-out entrance, but before he could continue, a swift chop landed on his head.
Hikari glanced at the villagers whispering and pointing in their direction, her face paling slightly. She subtly shifted her stance, shielding Kaito, then whispered urgently,
"Right now! Immediately! Come with me!"
Worried her tone might have been too harsh, she forced herself to switch to the specific wavelength she used to communicate with this brat.
"Be good... listen to your ancestor."
At this moment, it wasn't just Uchiha Hikari who was suffering—Konan, standing before Pain, was equally exasperated.
Kaito rubbed his head and exchanged a glance with Pain. Then, in perfect unison, they spoke:
"Then you two say 'Secret Realm.'"
Hikari and Konan remained silent, only clenching their fists, their expressions beneath the masks twisted in agony.
Seeing that they still didn't believe them, Kaito took a few steps forward. Sensing that other Puppets would arrive soon, Pain followed him through the gate.
"Enough! What the hell are you two—?"
Konan began to scold them, but halfway through her sentence, she watched as the two vanished right before the gate.
The sight nearly made their eyes pop out of their sockets, leaving them questioning reality.
What just happened???
Where did they go??
