Chapter 84
"Space-Time Ninjutsu?"Konan turned her head to look at Uchiha Hikari. Seeing the two suddenly disappear, she immediately suspected it was due to the technique Uchiha Kaito possessed that allowed him to swap places with a dog.
Their disappearance from the village entrance most likely meant Kaito had taken them away.
However...
One thing puzzled her—why had Nagato's controlled Pain, the Deva Path, also vanished without any physical contact?
"No," Hikari frowned in response, then raised her finger to point at the ground. "There's no dog."
She was quite familiar with Kaito's Flying Thunder Dog technique, and this situation definitely indicated some other unexpected change.
"No?"
Konan's frown deepened. The two exchanged glances before turning their attention back to Amegakure's gate.
Somehow, an absurd thought suddenly rose in their minds...
That so-called Secret Realm... Could it actually be real?
The moment the thought formed, both of them felt a chill run down their spines, their faces paling with fright. They quickly suppressed the idea, terrified of ending up just as bizarre as the others.
Whoosh—
Two of Nagato's Puppets descended from the sky, passing right by the two women without so much as a greeting before shouting in unison toward the gate:
"Secret Realm!"
Then, they vanished right before their eyes.
This time, Hikari and Konan were frozen in place for a solid three seconds, completely unable to process what they had just witnessed.
A few minutes later, Konan pursed her lips, clenched her fists tightly, and stammered hesitantly.
"Should we... try it?"
"You go first!"
Hikari's voice was unusually flustered, as if she feared Konan had somehow peeked into her own embarrassing thoughts. Her reaction startled Konan in turn.
Konan glanced at the onlooking villagers, gritted her teeth, and beneath her mask, her expression seemed to solidify into one of grave determination—though with a hint of timidity.
"T-together!"
At this moment, Hikari began to understand why two mentally afflicted individuals might feel no psychological burden when together.
Simply put, having someone else by your side made it easier to endure the strange looks from others when acting out.
Even if it was embarrassing, at least they'd be embarrassed together.
She had to admit, the psychological burden was indeed lighter this way.
Hikari and Konan turned their heads away, avoiding each other's gaze. After a brief internal struggle, they both whispered in unison:
"Secret Realm!" x2
Then, under the bewildered stares of the villagers, they stepped through the gate.
They walked back and forth over a dozen times, forcing themselves to ignore the confused and startled looks from the crowd, resisting the urge to turn and flee...
But eventually, the villagers couldn't take it anymore.
"Lady Angel, are you... facing some kind of difficulty?"
An elderly woman in the crowd seemed particularly familiar with Konan's voice. Even with her disguise, the woman had no trouble recognizing the Angel.
"N-no, not me!" Konan replied with a hint of panic. A closer observer might have noticed that her toe-curling was far more frequent than Hikari's.
Despite her efforts to hide it, the villagers' expressions made it clear they didn't believe her. In the end, Konan had no choice but to summon the authority of the Angel, sternly ordering the crowd to disperse and spare her further humiliation.
The villagers obeyed, scattering from the gate—some returning home, others going back to work. The dispersing crowd gave Uchiha Hikari a bit more courage.
"Did we... not shout loud enough?"
She sounded uncertain.
Because whether it was Kaito and Pain or the other two orange-haired guys, the moment they entered, their shouts of "Secret Realm" were so loud it was almost dizzying.
"Should we try again...?"
"Okay, one last time."
Konan nodded, craning her neck to glance at the departing villagers. After confirming they weren't hiding and secretly watching, she finally let out a long sigh of relief.
"SECRET REALM!!!" x2
This time, the two shouted so loudly they startled the birds in the forest and even caught the attention of two returning Akatsuki members.
"Konan?"
"What are you doing?"
Kakuzu and Sasori stood behind them, their sudden voices nearly making the two women unleash Paper Style and Amaterasu in fright.
Under her mask, Hikari's face was twisted into a grimace, her eyes tightly shut, and her fists clenched so hard they trembled.
Faced with the strangers' questioning, she even held her breath, afraid a single exhale might reveal her identity.
She even began considering whether to silence them permanently.
"Nothing. Just showing the new recruit around," Konan replied calmly, pretending nothing had happened.
"But you were clearly shouting something about a 'Secret Realm.'"
Sasori's muffled voice from within his puppet, Hiruko, instantly made both women whip their heads around, their eyes blazing with murderous intent that sent a chill down Sasori's spine.
"I must have misheard."
For some reason, Sasori felt that digging deeper would genuinely get him killed. Leaving those words behind, he quickly maneuvered Hiruko through the gate, not bothering to wait for Kakuzu.
"Wait."
But then Konan suddenly called out, stopping Sasori after a few steps and Kakuzu, who had been about to leave.
"You two, come here."
Click—
Uchiha Hikari had already drawn her kunai, appearing instantly in front of the hunchbacked puppet.
"Step back."
Kakuzu: ?
Sasori: ??
Ten minutes later...
Two Akatsuki members stood "voluntarily" at the entrance of Amegakure, shouting "Secret Realm, open!" while serving their punishment.
Even so, Konan and Hikari, standing by the doorframe, still couldn't figure out how those two had vanished right under their noses.
"Did we miss some detail?"
Konan turned to Hikari, suspicion in her eyes as she wondered if something had gone wrong. Her mind replayed the earlier events over and over.
If all else failed...
She'd have to find Nagato and ask where the hell Pain had gone.
"I remember it correctly..." Uchiha Hikari murmured to herself, her hands continuously inspecting the worn-out gate.
She even mimicked Kaito's earlier actions, running her hands through the air between the gate panels.
Unaware that she now appeared just as eccentric to outsiders.
"Secret Realm! Open!"
Kakuzu shouted again, then casually added, "What exactly is happening here?"
"Secret Realm, open."
"Is this some kind of special Ninjutsu?"
Sasori's voice followed Kakuzu's, his emotionless tone betraying a hint of curiosity.
He genuinely wanted to understand what was going on.
And what exactly "Secret Realm" meant.
Konan and Hikari fell silent at their questions. Just as they were about to respond, a familiar voice reached their ears.
"Kaito, try this immortal herb! What does it do?"
Pain had somehow emerged from a villager's house, clutching what looked like roadside weeds, calling Kaito's name with excitement.
"Wait, I haven't finished eating the sunflowers I just picked."
Kaito's voice rang out. He appeared with a backpack filled with colorful weeds and wildflowers of unknown origin, two sunflowers chewing on his shoulders.
The boy had also emerged from a villager's home.
As he walked with lively steps, he kept pulling weeds and wildflowers from his bag to feed the sunflowers on his shoulders.
Seeing this, Konan and Hikari's faces turned darker than a pot's bottom.
Kakuzu's eyelids twitched violently. After a long pause, he turned to Konan.
"Leader..."
"What is this?"
