Naruto : My system is weird

Chapter 89

Konoha Village, Hokage's Office. The Third Hokage clenched his pipe between his teeth, lips twitching as he paced back and forth across his office.

His entire demeanor radiated unusual agitation.

On his desk lay the intelligence report delivered by the ANBU, detailing every aspect of yesterday's joint assault on Amegakure by several villages.

From the resurrection of the stone statue in the Land of Fire, which repelled the Raikage, Kazekage, and Tsuchikage with just a few moves, to the sudden appearance of golden lightning on the battlefield that single-handedly defeated the shinobi of multiple villages...

It all made the Third increasingly uneasy about the future of the Shinobi World.

Rumors were spreading that the glowing statue was a powerful summon of Konoha, and with the recent deaths of several shinobi near the Land of Fire's borders, the other villages had grown even more resentful toward the Leaf.

Of course,

They weren't too fond of Kumogakure either.

Konoha might have acted questionably, but Kumo's actions—unleashing large-scale Lightning Release ninjutsu and even using the Akatsuki Organization's name to attack Sunagakure, Iwagakure, Kirigakure, and others—

Were downright inhuman.

The situation in the Shinobi World was deteriorating rapidly, with tensions between villages resembling a powder keg ready to explode at the slightest spark.

Adding to the Third's worries was the fact that Danzo's unit had been wiped out—along with the entire Uchiha clan.

"Kakashi, has Danzo still not returned?"

"No." Kakashi shook his head, sighing regretfully before speaking in a complicated tone. "The scene was... horrific. The entire thirty-mile radius was scorched by lightning strikes."

"There were no leads left to follow."

"I see..."

The Third's gaze grew clouded as he muttered under his breath. Suddenly, he recalled the night Shisui had come to him.

The long-missing Shisui had not only exposed Danzo's atrocities but also revealed the man's scheme to ensure the Uchiha clan's annihilation on the battlefield.

The Third had been furious. If not for the village's weakened state, he would have suited up and dragged Danzo back for judgment right then.

But Shisui had merely left with a final request—to look after Uchiha Sasuke—before vanishing from the village again...

The Third clasped his hands behind his back and slowly walked to the balcony, staring at the faces carved into the Hokage Monument, lost in thought.

After a long silence, he finally spoke.

"War..."

"Is war coming again?"

This battle had cost Konoha dozens of elite jonin, the entire Uchiha clan, and...

His old friend, Shimura Danzo, along with his Root operatives.

Losing half their combat strength wouldn't even be an exaggeration.

Perhaps the Fourth Raikage had foreseen this. The so-called siege on Amegakure might have been nothing more than a ploy to weaken Konoha.

"Kakashi, announce the village's casualty list."

The Third let out a long sigh and gestured toward the battle report on his desk, signaling Kakashi to take it away.

"Yes."

For a fleeting moment, Kakashi's mind flashed to his younger days with Obito. Knowing the Uchiha clan had perished under Lightning Release left a bitter taste in his mouth.

It felt like...

The last remnants of his friend were now gone.

But then again...

Was Uchiha Kaito even still alive?

The question surfaced in Kakashi's mind, but as he stepped out the door, he dismissed it as wishful thinking.

If Fugaku and Mikoto had gone to the battlefield, there was no way their son wouldn't have followed.

He must have died there too. After all, no matter how you look at it, a six-year-old child couldn't possibly have survived such a powerful Lightning Release.

That afternoon.

The Hokage Building announced the news of the war casualties, drawing all the villagers to gather below the building. Regardless of whether the fallen had any connection to them, as fellow villagers, everyone felt sorrow to some extent.

Among the crowd was a small figure dressed in Uchiha clan attire.

"No... impossible..."

"Big Brother Shisui promised me..."

Upon seeing the news that the entire Uchiha clan had perished in battle, Sasuke felt as if struck by lightning. His mind went blank, and his entire body trembled uncontrollably.

He stood beneath the Hokage Building for a long time, his gaze never leaving the list of fallen Uchiha members, his thoughts in complete disarray.

Earlier, when he had seen Big Brother Shisui and witnessed the Root ninja attempting to electrocute their clansmen beneath the power lines, Sasuke had felt that Kaito's death couldn't have been an accident.

It was clearly the work of the Root ninja.

But now...

Before he could even uncover the truth behind Kaito's death, the targets of his vengeance—his clansmen and family—were all gone.

For six-year-old Sasuke, it felt as if the sky had collapsed.

"Sasuke, you... aren't going home yet?"

Suddenly, Uzumaki Naruto's voice came from a distance. Passing by the Hokage Building today, he had seen Sasuke standing there, lost in thought all afternoon.

After hearing from other villagers about the Uchiha clan's demise, Naruto had watched Sasuke from around the corner for hours.

He wanted to step forward and offer some comfort, but Sasuke's state left him at a loss for words.

With his brother having died not long ago, and now his entire clan and family gone in battle...

Naruto thought it might be best to let Sasuke be alone for now, so he simply crouched in the corner, watching him.

As the sky darkened and the streetlights flickered on, Naruto couldn't help but call out to the boy.

He didn't want Sasuke to starve standing at the entrance.

Sasuke turned slightly, his gaze unfocused. Without even acknowledging Naruto, he staggered toward home in a daze.

The entire way, he kept recalling the happy times he had shared with his family.

By the time he reached his doorstep, he didn't even remember how he had gotten there...

Creak—

Pushing open the gate, Sasuke mechanically repeated the motion of closing it behind him, then dragged his exhausted body slowly through the courtyard.

But just as he crossed the yard and stepped into the house, he thought he saw Kaito sitting on the stone table, eating a popsicle.

"My foolish little brother..."

"Why did you come home empty-handed?"

Sasuke: ???
