Chapter 90
Kaito sat on the stone table in the yard, one foot propped on the bench, legs crossed, casually eating half a popsicle.
He was wearing clothes identical to Sasuke's.
He had rummaged through the house for his own clothes, but it seemed his mother had packed them away, so he had taken his little brother's instead.
Honestly, once he put on Sasuke's outfit...
Unless you looked closely, no one could tell the difference between the two brothers.
The popsicle was one he had just bought outside.
Dressed almost exactly like Sasuke and wearing the same stoic expression, he had been mistaken for Sasuke by several people on the street.
"Honestly, you guys..."
"Why did you pack away all my things too?""I couldn't even take a nap when I got back."
Kaito still radiated faint resentment as he spoke of the matter. He glanced at Sasuke, who seemed dazed from the surprise, then continued with disdain.
"You didn't even wash your bedding—it reeks of drool."
"And what's more..."
"Why is there no food left at home?"
"Kaito...?"
Hearing the guy ramble on, Sasuke suddenly felt an inexplicable chill run down his spine.
He truly wanted to see Kaito again.
But...
Having just learned that his entire clan had perished in battle outside, before he could even return home to grieve, he pushed open the door to find his brother—who had supposedly died not long ago—sitting in the courtyard, grumbling resentfully about household matters.
One moment complaining there was no food, the next lamenting there wasn't even a single piece of clothing...
The sight was eerily reminiscent of the earthbound spirits people spoke of, formed from excessive lingering attachments.
In such a scenario, it never crossed Sasuke's mind that Kaito had returned from the dead. Instead, he assumed Kaito had become some kind of earthbound spirit due to unresolved grievances.
Recalling the horror stories Kaito used to tell...
It was said that when family members turned into spirits due to resentment, nine times out of ten they would haunt you for life, and in severe cases, even take lives.
Remembering those terrifying tales, the child's face instantly turned deathly pale.
"You..." Sasuke quickly took a step back, beads of sweat the size of peas dripping from his chin as he raised a trembling hand, tightly shut his eyes, and shouted with a mix of fear and panic.
"Kaito! I know there's more to your death!"
"But you can't come back to harm your own little brother!!"
As he spoke, he remembered seeing the Uchiha clan's death notices at the Hokage building earlier that day. Overwhelmed by grief rising from the depths of his heart, he suddenly burst into loud sobs.
"I... I'm already miserable enough as it is!!"
Uchiha Kaito: ?
The ice pop in Kaito's mouth froze along with his expression.
He had initially thought Sasuke was standing there dumbfounded from joy, unable to speak. But hearing Sasuke talk about death and dying left him utterly bewildered.
Wait a minute??
What is this kid talking about?
When did I die!?
Kaito had come to see his little brother mainly to explain the Uchiha clan's fake deaths and escape plan, as well as to shed light on what Itachi had done.
Whether Sasuke believed him or not.
At the very least, it would serve as a preemptive warning, preventing Itachi's eventual appearance from driving the kid completely insane.
But...
It was true that in Sasuke's eyes, their parents were dead. However, Kaito had clearly instructed their father to explain things to Sasuke before leaving...
How did he end up dead?
And what's this about "more to your death"? That can't be right, can it?
Sitting on the stone table, Kaito's mind raced at lightning speed, so absorbed in thought that he didn't even notice his ice pop melting.
Sasuke continued to cry, his grief over the loss of his entire clan and Kaito's supposed death erupting in this moment of anguish.
"You died... Mom and Dad died too..."
"The whole clan is gone."
"Why! Why is everyone dying one after another? Just a few days ago we were all eating together at home!"
"A few days ago, the streets outside our compound were still so lively..."
Sasuke was heartbroken and utterly confused.
Everyone's deaths seemed to have happened without any warning. Having barely come to terms with Kaito's death, now facing this new tragedy—it would be too much for any child to bear, let alone an adult.
Kaito sat quietly on the stone table, listening to Sasuke's cries without interruption.
Until...
After the brat had cried for over ten minutes, his emotions finally began to settle slightly."Wuwu... I know you must be very resentful about dying so miserably under a power pole. You must feel it's such an unfair way to go..."
"Huh? Wh-what?"
Kaito really wanted to be a good listener, but when he heard the details of his own death, his expression completely cracked as he stared blankly.
Sasuke genuinely believed Kaito was a deeply resentful spirit and ignored his reaction, continuing to speak to himself.
"It's okay..."
"If you have any unfulfilled wishes, I'll find a way to help you complete them."
Sasuke wiped his tears with his sleeve, his voice choked with sobs.
He really couldn't bear to part with this annoying guy, but he'd heard that the dead could only rest peacefully after fulfilling their unfinished business...
Kaito let out a sinister chuckle. When he lifted his face, the setting sun cast deep shadows across his features, creating an instantly eerie atmosphere.
"You still have your piggy banks hidden, right?"
"?"
At these words, Sasuke's head snapped up, his eyes filled with confusion, bewilderment, and a hint of anger.
This familiar feeling momentarily made Sasuke forget his tears.
If the Kaito standing before him wasn't already dead, Sasuke swore he would have drawn the two ninja swords at his waist and given this annoying bastard a good beating.
What a jerk!
Even after death, he's still after my allowance?!
At that moment, the perfect older brother image in Sasuke's memory shattered, replaced by the annoying guy who constantly teased him and occasionally smashed his piggy banks.
"You... you're just as annoying dead as you were alive."
Sasuke gritted his teeth, spat out these words disdainfully, then turned and walked back into the house.
What could he do?
Kaito had once taught him that the dead should be respected.
"This kid... is truly hopeless."
Kaito scratched his head as he watched his still-clueless little brother, stroking his chin as he wondered if he might have taken away most of the boy's limited intelligence when they were born.
About three minutes later, Sasuke returned carrying a cardboard box containing three cat-shaped piggy banks - red, yellow, and pink.
He originally had seven in different colors, but Kaito had smashed one, he'd taken one to the cemetery, and after covering household expenses during his time alone, these three were all that remained.
Though Sasuke's face remained expressionless, a pained look flashed in his eyes when he glanced at the piggy banks.
He threw the box at Kaito's feet, then quickly retreated five steps, warily observing his "long-dead" brother.
He seemed to be watching for any signs of the guy suddenly transforming into some blue-faced, fanged demon.
To be honest, Sasuke still felt a bit scared.
After all, in Kaito's stories, there were far too many terrifying creatures - demons that ate human hearts and livers, zombies that turned you with one bite...
Including demons specifically targeting blood relatives.
Crash—
The sound of breaking piggy banks rang out as Kaito smashed all three in quick succession. After letting out a satisfied shout, he casually mentioned to Sasuke:
"Oh, right. This afternoon at Tanzaku Alley I bought an ice pop, ten octopus balls, three bottles of orange soda..."
Kaito proceeded to list his afternoon purchases, going through over thirty items before finishing.
This completely derailed Sasuke's fearful mood.
"?"
Sasuke was confused. He couldn't understand why a dead Kaito would be out shopping.
And...
Can dead people really walk around buying snacks?"I won't take the money from the piggy bank. Use it tomorrow to settle the accounts—I used your name to buy things on credit today."
"Uchiha Kaito!!!"
