Chapter 91
People always idealize those in their memories, especially the deceased, who become more flawless with time.
Sasuke was no exception.
But now, seeing Uchiha Kaito in the flesh and hearing that this guy had been running around the village using his face to rack up debts...
Sasuke's blood boiled instantly, his fair complexion flushing crimson as his pulse raced.
His two-tomoe Sharingan activated in an instant.
Zzt—
A faint crackle of electricity sounded, followed by the metallic ring of Sasuke unsheathing his blades. Gripping two ninja swords, he completely forgot about vengeful spirits or earthbound apparitions.
Right now...
All he wanted was to teach this guy a lesson!!
Rage overwhelmed every other emotion in his heart, so much so that he subconsciously ignored the Chakra fluctuations he observed around Kaito with his Sharingan.
Sasuke charged forward, one sword leading and the other trailing, propelled by Lightning Release. In an instant, he was right in front of Kaito.
However, he only intended to rough Kaito up, not obliterate his soul. So, he refrained from channeling Chakra into his attack, even striking with the blunt side of his blades.
Clink—
Facing his foolish younger brother's assault, Kaito merely raised two fingers, effortlessly catching the blade between them.
The crisp metallic clang left Sasuke dumbfounded, his expression frozen in shock.
When the first strike failed, Sasuke swung his other sword at Kaito's scalp.
This time, he used the sharp edge.
"U! Chi! Ha! Kai! To!!"
"You bastard—you're not dead?!"
Even someone as dense as Sasuke could tell in that moment of contact...
He felt Kaito's tangible presence.
And the unmistakable flow of Chakra within him.
Kaito rolled his eyes and flicked his fingers, the force of the motion sending the still-stunned Sasuke flying backward.
"When did I ever say I was dead?"
"You... you...!"
Sasuke quickly scrambled to his feet after hitting the ground, pointing a trembling finger at Kaito in the distance, his face contorted with fury.
He glanced at the faint shadow beneath Kaito's feet, then replayed his earlier words in his mind, suddenly feeling like a complete fool.
A clown played for a fool by someone.
Sasuke recalled how he had wept at Kaito's funeral, the embarrassing confessions he'd made at the graveside, and the humiliating outburst he'd just had...
Now, he was ready to explode.
"I... you...!"
Trembling with rage, Sasuke's finger quivered as he pointed at Kaito, his mouth opening and closing without forming a single coherent sentence. In the end, he could only throw his arms wide, adopting that iconic 'Saiyan' power stance, and let out a primal scream at the sky.
"Ahhh—!"
The shame of being deceived and the emotions he'd suppressed erupted all at once. The two tomoe in Sasuke's pupils spun wildly, arcs of electricity crackling around him, nearly matching the intensity of that day beneath the power lines.
The sparks sizzled, killing several sunflowers in the yard.
The next moment, a third tomoe appeared in his left eye, though his right eye, despite its rapid spinning, failed to manifest the third tomoe.
Thud—The moment his eyes opened, Sasuke only felt darkness before his vision, then fell backward with a dull thud.
This completely threw off Kaito, who had just been about to say something.
"What is this?"
"Two and a half tomoe?"
Kaito clicked his tongue, wiped his hands on his unconscious little brother a few times, then dragged the boy up and carried him into the room.
Still, for a six-year-old to awaken the Sharingan to this extent was already much stronger than in the original story.
As for why it hadn't fully developed into the Three Tomoe, Kaito guessed it was probably due to physical limitations.
Late at night, the unconscious Sasuke had a dream.
He dreamed that Uchiha Kaito had come back to life and was standing in their home…
Huh??
In his sleep, Sasuke suddenly frowned as if sensing something, then abruptly sat up in bed.
Looking down at the blanket covering him, he let out a long sigh of relief.
"Thank goodness…"
"It was just a dream."
Upon waking, Sasuke naturally assumed the day's events had all been a dream.
Their clan possessed such immense power—how could they all have died in battle outside the village?
Yet, as he calmed down, Sasuke also felt a pang of regret, because Kaito still hadn't actually come back to life and appeared at home.
"Yo, you're awake?"
From the corner of the room, Kaito—holding a black-and-white memorial photo—grinned at Sasuke and raised a hand in greeting.
This nearly scared the boy into passing out again.
"Ah—!"
At the sight of Kaito in the corner, Sasuke scrambled backward on all fours, shouting things like "Ghost!" and "Don't kill me!" in panic until his back hit the wall.
"My foolish little brother…"
Kaito had been waiting for this moment. Earlier, while carrying Sasuke inside, he had suddenly noticed a photo lying face-down on the living room table.
It was his memorial portrait.
Seeing his own memorial photo out of nowhere left Kaito with extremely mixed emotions. The more he thought about how news of his death had spread throughout Konoha—and in such a humiliating way—the angrier he became.
Damn it.
Did none of these Konoha idiots even question it???
A genius of the Uchiha clan dying under a telephone pole or something…
No matter how you spun it, that was just absurd!
So Kaito crouched in the corner, pondering how the village's morons had bought it, while also preparing a little "surprise" for his brother when he woke up.
Though, judging by Sasuke's reaction, the scare might have been a bit too much.
After screaming for a while, Sasuke—under the moonlight streaming through the window—finally noticed Kaito's shadow and realized the truth: his brother wasn't dead.
He was actually quite clever.
For instance, he had never forgotten the method Kaito taught him at age three for distinguishing humans from ghosts.
"What the hell is going on?!"
"Why did Father say you were dead??"
Kaito: "…"
Even though he had already guessed at Fugaku's shady scheme, hearing Sasuke's words still left Kaito speechless.
"Did he not tell you… I was just leaving the village on a secret mission for a month or two?"
Sasuke, who had a thousand things to say, found all his words stuck in his throat upon hearing Kaito's explanation.
The two brothers stared at each other in silence for a long moment.
"So…"
"The Uchiha clan's casualty list posted under the Hokage Building was fake too?"
Through Kaito's fake death, Sasuke immediately connected it to the Uchiha clan's supposed annihilation. He stared straight at Kaito, originally intending to confront him about the whole fake death stunt, but now all he wanted was to find out whether his family and clan were still alive.
"Hmm..." Kaito pondered for a moment upon hearing this, his expression turning complicated as he thought of Uchiha Itachi.
"You could say that... everyone has gone to another world."
"Waaah—"
Sasuke's tears had already welled up in his eyes when he saw Kaito hesitating. Now, upon hearing "another world," he couldn't hold back and burst into tears again.
This left Kaito at a complete loss.
"Hey... no! Don't cry yet..."
