Chapter 92
"That's the same thing!!"
Sasuke cried out defiantly, his neck stiff with emotion. In front of Kaito, he had shed his usual tough facade, reverting to the crybaby he once was.
"I'm not stupid!"
"Don't think I don't understand anything."
Perhaps feeling embarrassed by his current state, Sasuke added fiercely, as if to prove he had seen through everything.
"Sigh..." Kaito exhaled deeply, then placed a hand on his shoulder.
Fair enough.
His earlier words had indeed been odd, so it was natural for Sasuke to misunderstand.
"They're not dead... they're just accompanying us in a different way."
"Never mind, I'll take you to see for yourself."
Sasuke: ???
The first sentence made Sasuke clench his fists. He wasn't a three-year-old anymore—how could Kaito expect him to buy such childish comfort?
But before his emotions could fully settle, Kaito's second sentence hit him like a thunderbolt.
He whipped his head around, staring at Kaito in disbelief. "What do you mean by that?"
Sasuke's tone was deadly serious.
Because he suspected Kaito, overwhelmed by grief, might be planning to take him to the Pure Land to see their parents—and his beloved older brother.
"What are you thinking?"
Kaito promptly rewarded him with a karate chop to the head—his little brother's favorite—eliciting a yelp as Sasuke clutched his skull. When he looked up again, his eyes were blazing with the 2.5-Tomoe Sharingan, fury practically radiating from them.
But before Sasuke could escalate, Kaito grabbed him and vanished from the spot. The next second, the brothers materialized within the borders of Amegakure.
"You... you—you!"
"How can your Dog Clone do this!?"
The moment they landed, his idiot brother's shocked exclamation rang out again.
The bizarre architecture surrounding them instantly told Sasuke they were no longer in Konoha.
Which raised the question...
Why was Kaito's Dog Clone so different from the Beast Clone he'd learned about from Inuzuka Kiba?
"Where exactly is your focus?"
Hearing "Dog Clone," Kaito's eye twitched violently, his Three-Tomoe Sharingan nearly activating on the spot. If this brat weren't his brother, he'd have pulled out a kunai and stabbed a hole right through him.
"Tch, fine, keep your secrets... like I care."
Sasuke tilted his head in feigned indifference, though his mind was already scheming how to get Kaito to teach him this powerful Ninjutsu.
Kaito almost felt bad seeing through Sasuke's transparent plotting.
"By the way... if you see anything unusual later, don't scream, don't panic, and most importantly—don't tell anyone you're from the Uchiha clan. Got it?"Kaito really wanted to tell Sasuke directly about the Secret Realm, but it was clear that the clever boy might not believe his words. So he decided to first let the kid broaden his horizons.
As for why he gave him that warning...
Mainly, he was worried Sasuke might scream and embarrass him later.
But this warning sounded extremely bizarre to Sasuke, even carrying a hint of horror story vibes, making him shiver in fear, his body stiffening slightly.
"If... if someone calls my name from behind..."
"Am I not supposed to turn around either?"
Sasuke's little face was full of worry, and as his eyes darted around, the place seemed increasingly eerie and terrifying to him.
And so very cold!
His mind flashed with horrifying images—like the eighteen levels of hell or the underworld...
In short.
The people appearing on either side of the street no longer seemed human in his eyes.
This unfamiliar village, in Sasuke's mind, had already become a haunted place.
Kaito led Sasuke toward the village entrance, the boy never once letting go of his hem the entire way, acting jumpy and constantly looking around with his head lowered.
Whenever a villager glanced their way, Sasuke would panic and duck his head, seemingly terrified of making eye contact with anyone from Amegakure.
"Kaito, how much longer...?"
"If you're scared, I can take you back!"
His suddenly socially anxious little brother drew many strange looks, especially since the two were twins—their presence on the street turned heads without fail.
"No! I... I just really need to use the bathroom."
Sasuke pretended to be calm, not wanting Kaito to realize he was scared, all while trying to reassure himself internally...
It's fine, it's fine...
The Pure Land isn't that scary. As long as I can see Mom and Dad again, it'll be okay.
Just as Sasuke was comforting himself, he suddenly spotted a bizarre figure at the corner.
The man wore a black cloak with red clouds, but his body was covered in dense, thread-like black tendrils, and five masks floated around his neck.
Kakuzu, who had been repairing his heart at the corner, noticed the two kids in the distance and recalled the new recruits the leader had mentioned recently. Instantly, he grinned, all five masks displaying "friendly" smiles.
To Sasuke, those smiles made him think this was the Pure Land—or worse, one of the terrifying underworld enforcers from Kaito's stories.
Terrified, he plastered himself against Kaito's back, squeezing his eyes shut and screaming uncontrollably.
"AHHH!!!"
"M-Monster!!"
Kakuzu: ?
Kaito: ...
Sasuke's reaction left both of them speechless. Kakuzu tugged at his arm, then pointed a finger at himself, then at the screaming brat in the distance.
"How rude."
Being suddenly disrespected like this didn't sit well with Kakuzu, especially in front of a new recruit.
So, he decided to say something to salvage his dignity.
"Hmph. Your lack of manners reminds me of a worthy opponent from the past. Back then, he was just as disrespectful as you, brat."
By now, Kakuzu had resumed his human form and spoke in a haughty tone, ready to regale the two kids with tales of the old days.
"The God of Shinobi—Hashirama Senju. Ever heard of him?"
Kaito: ...
To Kaito, Kakuzu's boasting was downright unbearable.
Did he not get beaten badly enough by Tsunade and Jiraiya last time? Why is he still bragging here?
However, one thing Kaito could be sure of was that this centenarian didn't seem to have discovered his true identity yet. Otherwise, they would've started fighting immediately.
Sasuke's reaction was the complete opposite of Kaito's. Upon hearing the name "Hashirama Senju," he was so shocked that he leaned back in a tactical retreat, his mouth slightly agape with disbelief written all over his face.
Hiss—
So the underworld enforcers were this terrifying???
Even the First Hokage, who had reached the Pure Land, couldn't match them?
Was this the Black Impermanence? Or the White Impermanence?
Why did it seem different from what Kaito had described??
"Hmph!" Kakuzu, seeing the two brats frozen in place, could barely suppress the smirk on his lips. He crossed his arms and tilted his head slightly, his eyes flashing with reminiscence and regret.
"That battle—"
"Bastard, I wasn't finished talking!! You two disrespectful brats!!"
Before he could even begin, Kaito grabbed Sasuke and teleported away, giving the man no chance to show off.
Meanwhile, Sasuke became even more convinced that this place was truly the resting ground of the deceased.
Otherwise, Kaito wouldn't have fled in terror at the sight of an underworld enforcer.
The thought made Sasuke tremble even harder.
