Chapter 74: Chapter 74
Zixu dragged Hyuga Chinano's shadow clone and the little black snake he had led astray to join the village construction effort. Recently, he had essentially allowed the shadow clone to move freely in the outside world. The clone's mental state had noticeably improved, which manifested in his increased motivation to catch fish.
When Zixu awakened the power of the Uo Uo no Mi (Fish-Fish Fruit), he realized that while he could wield multiple Devil Fruits, this one suited him best.
As mentioned before, the power of the Silence Fruit was somewhat limited when used by Zixu's original body. At best, he could utilize 70% to 80% of its potential. However, after awakening the Uo Uo no Mi, the sense of rejection became even stronger.
If Devil Fruits had personalities, the Uo Uo no Mi was the landlord, while the others were mere tenants. Before the landlord arrived, Zixu could barely manage to house the other fruits. But once the landlord took residence, there was no room left. The best solution was to transfer the Silence Fruit's power to his clone, ensuring it could operate at full capacity.
"Looks like I can't just eat any Devil Fruit I come across. Hmm... I could give them to Aburame Hatsuizumi and the others or use them as rewards for my organization. Even if I do consume one, it has to be the right fit..." Zixu mused as he used lightning to power an excavator—one of Orochimaru's creations—to fill in a slope.
"The biggest issue is that transforming into a dragon form drains an immense amount of energy. Devil Fruits consume so much stamina... How much energy does Kaido even have? I'm still far behind him..." Zixu recalled the dream where a bound yet unyielding figure continued swinging his massive kanabo, sighing at the sheer difference in endurance.
"Oi, oi, oi! You're slacking again!" The Silence Clone had snuck off to do menial tasks at a sluggish pace—purely an excuse to slack off.
Zixu leaped off the excavator, his fist gradually turning black with Haki, before smashing it down onto the clone's head. The clone instantly dispersed into white smoke.
However, the Silence Fruit's power did not stay within Zixu's body for long before the Uo Uo no Mi rejected it once again, forcing the Silence Fruit's abilities into another newly-formed shadow clone.
Zixu smirked at the reformed clone and clapped him on the shoulder. "You can't just laze around all day. Since you don't have much to do, go gather some intel. Consider it a test. If you do well, there will be more important missions for you in the future. If not… well, you can enjoy the 996 lifestyle. Consider it a privilege."
With that, Zixu walked off. His biggest concern now was the Edo Tensei (Impure World Reincarnation). Since he couldn't find answers here, he decided to visit Ryuchi Cave.
"What kind of intel do you want?" the Silence Clone asked sullenly, looking at Zixu with the expression of a resentful ghost, practically radiating negative energy.
"Hmm… How about gathering information on Konoha? Our village is relatively close to it. Find out who the current Hokage is, and if possible, investigate the Hyuga Clan's activities..." Zixu's grin turned sinister. "But of course, that depends on whether you can even infiltrate Konoha. I have faith in you. Failure is just another opportunity in disguise. Be grateful."
The clone, visibly irritated, waved his hand dismissively before storming off, preparing for his infiltration mission.
After dispatching a few ordinary shadow clones to assist with village matters, Zixu went to check on the training progress of Aburame Hatsuizumi and the others before heading to Ryuchi Cave.
Aburame Hatsuizumi was advancing rapidly. She was diligent, speaking little but working hard. Her progress in ninjutsu followed Zixu's guidance faithfully. Though her Suiryuudan no Jutsu (Water Dragon Bullet Technique) lacked the fluidity of Zixu's own, and her hand seals were still a bit slow, she had significantly improved.
For now, she had temporarily halted her ninjutsu training to focus on refining insects. Everyone had their own strengths, and her talent in insect refinement was extraordinary. Following Zixu's theories and adding her own adjustments, she successfully refined the previously unattainable Tenpeng Mushi (Sky Roc Insect).
The small spring-autumn cicada perched lazily on her shoulder, basking in the sunlight.
She was already considering how to refine her next creation, the Moonlight Worm.
Meanwhile, Karin had mastered her new technique—Gatling Nagare Kyoushin (Gatling Wave Sprint)—but the long training sessions had drained her chakra reserves. She now sat atop a stone, panting, her face flushed from exhaustion.
"Hah... I'm completely... drained... no chakra left..." Karin wiped the sweat from her forehead. Though simple in execution, the technique consumed an enormous amount of chakra.
Zixu walked over, tossed a few towels to the three of them, and sat down. Seeing Karin in such a miserable state, he couldn't help but chuckle.
"You don't have to push yourself this hard. I don't want you collapsing from chakra exhaustion."
Zixu half-joked, but Karin responded with a determined expression and an unexpectedly firm voice:
"Of course I do. I finally have a place where I'm accepted—where I'm not treated like a tool. I have to give it my all. Don't worry, I won't drag you down." She wiped her glasses and smiled brightly.
At some point, Neji had approached and overheard the conversation, contemplating her words.
Zixu waved him over. Neji had been wandering around the village the past few days, but no one knew what he was up to.
"Chinano should focus on techniques suited to her, but as a Hyuga, mastering the Byakugan is crucial. Rather than focusing on ninjutsu, developing the Byakugan's potential should be the priority. And as for her other eye..." Neji trailed off, his gaze serious.
In his view, the Byakugan, one of the Three Great Dojutsu, surely possessed hidden depths comparable to the Sharingan. He wanted to uncover those secrets, and now that Zixu was involved, he hoped to use him to investigate. Additionally, Chinano's other eye intrigued him.
Hatsuizumi, having restored her insect to its chakra form, pulled Chinano closer, curiosity gleaming in her eyes. "I'm curious about Chinano's other eye too. It wasn't clear when we were in Konoha, but now that we're in our own territory, you can tell us. That's not a Sharingan, is it? It sure looks like one."
Karin, now intrigued, leaned in. "Wait, what?! A Hyuga awakening something other than the Byakugan? Spill it!"
Everyone shifted into full spectator mode. Chinano, now the center of attention, sighed helplessly. If they wanted to know, she would explain what she understood about her eye.
Laughter and warmth filled the air beneath the bright blue sky, creating a rare, harmonious atmosphere.
Meanwhile, the Silence Clone quietly shouldered his bag and walked out of the village, his gaze firm.
His destination: Konoha.
There was no way in hell he was accepting the 996 lifestyle.
