Chapter 11: Chapter 11: Shadows of Power
1. A New Goal
Rin sat near the dying campfire, staring at his right hand—the same hand that had copied the Steel Release from the mercenary earlier that day. His skin had returned to normal, but he could still feel the lingering power within him.
"So… temporary Kekkei Genkai last 24 hours. That means if I don't copy a Kekkei Genkai permanently, it fades."
He clenched his fist.
"That's not enough."
If he wanted to stand above this world, he needed to copy powerful bloodlines permanently. But how? His system hadn't revealed any way to do it yet.
"For now, I need to test my limits."
2. A Curious Observer
Rin felt a pair of eyes watching him.
Kakashi.
The jonin sat on a tree branch, his book open, but Rin knew better. Kakashi was watching him. Studying him.
"He's suspicious. He saw me use Steel Release."
Rin met Kakashi's gaze. The silver-haired jonin simply smiled beneath his mask, then turned a page.
"He's not going to ask me about it… not yet."
That was both good and bad.
Good, because Kakashi wasn't exposing him.
Bad, because Kakashi was too smart to ignore it.
Rin exhaled. He needed to tread carefully.
3. A Conversation with Hinata
Hinata sat across from him, her pale eyes reflecting the fire's glow. "R-Rin-kun, today… you used something strange."
Rin blinked. "You noticed?"
She nodded. "Y-you turned your skin into metal. T-that's not something you could do before, r-right?"
He hesitated. Should he tell her?
Hinata wasn't like Naruto—she wouldn't blurt out secrets. But she was too kind, too honest. If he told her a half-truth, she might figure out the rest.
"I have to be careful."
"I learned it from that enemy," Rin finally said. "It's… complicated, but I can mimic techniques."
Hinata's eyes widened. "Mimic… techniques?"
"Yeah. It's not perfect, though."
She nodded slowly. "T-that's… amazing."
Rin didn't miss the slight awe in her voice.
"That's right, Hinata. Watch me. See how strong I can become."
4. The Mission Continues
The next morning, the caravan resumed its journey. The previous night's attack had left everyone tense, but there were no more ambushes.
Rin walked beside the lead cart, lost in thought.
"Steel Release will fade soon. I need another Kekkei Genkai to test the limits of my ability."
He glanced at Hinata. The Byakugan was still his, and since it hadn't faded, that meant some Kekkei Genkai were permanent while others were temporary.
"What's the difference? Is it because I copied it from a true bloodline user?"
If so, that meant to gain stronger Kekkei Genkai permanently, he needed direct contact with people who carried the bloodline.
"That means the Uchiha, the Senju, the Kaguya… and more."
A dangerous idea formed in his mind.
"If I touch an Uchiha… can I steal the Sharingan?"
5. Kakashi's Test
"Alright, Team 7," Kakashi said, snapping his book shut. "Time for some training."
Naruto groaned. "But we're on a mission!"
"And training is part of being a ninja," Kakashi replied lazily. "Consider this a test. If you fail, I might decide you're not ready for C-rank missions yet."
That got Naruto moving.
Rin narrowed his eyes. "A test?"
Kakashi's tests were never simple.
The jonin pulled out three bells. "Same rules as before. Three bells, but only two winners. Come at me with everything you've got."
Hinata looked nervous. Naruto grinned.
Rin?
Rin smirked. "Perfect."
"If I want to test my ability, who better to try it on than Kakashi himself?"
6. The Battle Begins
Naruto, as expected, charged in headfirst. "TAKE THIS! KAGE BUNSHIN NO JUTSU!"
Five clones rushed at Kakashi. The jonin didn't even move—he let Naruto come.
Then, in a blur—three clones were gone.
Hinata activated her Byakugan and took a defensive stance. Rin, meanwhile, vanished into the trees.
"I need to get close. If I can touch Kakashi even once…"
Kakashi's eye flicked toward him. Rin froze.
"Damn. He saw me."
The jonin disappeared—then suddenly, he was behind Rin.
"Too slow."
Rin barely dodged the incoming kunai. He needed a new plan.
"Alright… let's gamble."
He lunged forward and grabbed Kakashi's wrist.
For a brief second—contact.
[New Kekkei Genkai Detected… Scanning...]
Rin's heart skipped a beat.
"What… what does Kakashi have?!"
[Kekkei Genkai Copied: Sharingan (Inactive)]
Rin's eyes widened.
"It worked. I copied the Sharingan."
But before he could process it, Kakashi's knee slammed into his stomach, knocking the air out of him.
He collapsed to the ground, coughing.
Kakashi crouched beside him. "Rin, you're full of surprises. But don't get cocky."
Rin stared up at him, mind racing.
He had the Sharingan now.
Even if it wasn't active yet… it was his.
"One step closer to the ultimate power."
