Chapter 29: The Reappearing Oasis, Departure
The next morning, Link and the others packed their things and bid farewell to Cobra.
As they were leaving, Vivi stroked the fast-running duck that Igaram had brought back, smiling. "Karoo, remember to exercise regularly, and don't turn into a fat duck, okay?"
"Quack!"
Karoo nodded in a very human-like way, looking at Vivi with reluctance.
Vivi actually wanted to take him with her but dismissed the idea.
Link also didn't let Vivi take Karoo.
Karoo was no Chopper; his intelligence hadn't been fully developed. Unless he ate an Ancient Zoan or a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit, he would have no combat ability.
For the sake of experience, Link would be hunting various strong enemies in the future, and Carina and the others would have to participate. Karoo would only become a burden.
If Karoo were to die, Vivi would surely be heartbroken.
Instead of taking him along, it was better to let him stay in the Alabasta Kingdom and enjoy a comfortable life.
After leaving Alubarna, Link's group didn't head straight for the port city of Nanohana where their ship was docked. They first went to the former oasis city, Erumalu.
Although the World Government's people were on their way, and the Five Elders had agreed with Cobra on how to handle the Crocodile affair to avoid diminishing the prestige of the Seven Warlords, Cobra had not been idle these past few days.
The day after his call with the Five Elders, he gave a national speech, releasing the evidence of Baroque Works buying Dance Powder, clearing the royal family of suspicion. He also invited the World Government to formally intervene in the investigation and promised to give the people an explanation.
Other than Robin and Mr. 1, not even the members of Baroque Works knew that their boss was Crocodile.
However, Baroque Works was indeed one of the major powers in the first half of the Grand Line.
Therefore, the rebel army and the people were half-believing, half-doubting Cobra's words.
The war had temporarily stopped!
Today, Cobra would continue his speech to increase the trust of the rebel army and the people.
And Link was the key!
When it was noon, the king's speech began in Alubarna.
Link's group had also arrived at the deserted, dried-up city.
It wasn't completely deserted; there were a few people there, including a very persistent old man who was constantly digging, trying to find the underground water source.
Vivi grabbed Link's arm and pleaded, "Please, Link!"
"Leave it to me!"
Link smiled and gave Vivi a head-pat, then walked towards the ruined city.
Link clapped his hands together, and a dazzling blue aura erupted from his body. After gathering power for a moment, he suddenly shouted, "Wood Style: Deep Forest Emergence!"
Rumble...
A violent earthquake immediately spread throughout Erumalu.
The people remaining in the dried-up city were instantly thrown to the ground.
An invisible yet divine-like source of life covered the entire city's land in the blink of an eye.
The parched earth, amidst the violent shaking, regained its life, and countless cracks, large and small, appeared.
Saplings grew from the cracks, rapidly expanding like inflated balloons, turning into towering trees dozens, even hundreds of meters tall in just a few seconds.
As some of the trees grew, their branches, like human arms, coiled around the people who had fallen to the ground, preventing them from being crushed by the surging sea of trees.
In just over ten minutes, the sandy ground was revived with life.
The ruined houses were mercilessly destroyed by the towering trees.
When the violent tremors stopped, the dried-up city had disappeared, replaced by a dense forest.
Looking down from a god's perspective, a huge oasis had suddenly appeared in the vast, boundless desert.
"Hah..."
After completely turning Erumalu into an oasis, Link let out a heavy, turbid breath, his face covered in sweat.
The area of this oasis wasn't actually much larger than Whiskey Peak.
For Link, who had turned half of Cactus Island into a forest, the chakra consumption shouldn't have even reached a third.
But turning Erumalu into a forest had nearly depleted Link's chakra.
There was no helping it; the land was different!
The land of Whiskey Peak had not lost its life, so Link's use of Wood Style consumed relatively little chakra.
Erumalu, due to years without rain and repeated attacks by Crocodile's giant sandstorms, had its life force severely depleted, almost half-desertified.
If he didn't restore the life of the land here, Link would only need to consume a small amount of chakra to create a large number of trees, but those trees would quickly wither.
Creating a forest was a small matter; restoring the life of the land was the difficult part.
Fortunately, 20% of Hashirama Senju's chakra was already as vast as the sea.
Coupled with the fact that Erumalu's land hadn't completely desertified, Link managed to do it in one go.
Otherwise, Link might have needed several attempts to completely restore the land's life.
Seeing Link drenched in sweat and extremely weak for the first time, Vivi immediately ran over. Taking out a handkerchief, she wiped his sweat while saying with gratitude and heartache, "You've worked hard, Link."
"It's nothing. I'll be fine after a short rest."
Link took the handkerchief and looked at the equally worried Carina and Nami, smiling. "Let's go. We should leave."
After speaking, Link led the way towards the port city of Nanohana.
Meanwhile, Cobra, who was giving a speech in Alubarna, also revealed the theme of this speech.
He had hired the world-renowned "Impaler" at a high price to use his Logia-type Wood-Wood Fruit ability to restore the life of Erumalu's land and turn the ruined city into an oasis.
Afterward, the royal family would contribute money and effort to transform that oasis back into the Oasis City, Erumalu.
As soon as this news was released, it immediately caused a huge sensation in various cities across the Alabasta Kingdom.
When the rebel army sent people to investigate Erumalu, more and more people came to believe that Cobra was innocent.
Next, they just had to wait for the World Government to intervene in the investigation and completely confirm that Baroque Works had used Dance Powder and instigated the war. Then, this internal conflict would be completely over.
The Five Elders and Cobra had agreed on a way to handle it.
This method was obviously disadvantageous for Cobra.
But the Five Elders would definitely offer compensation, most likely a concession on the Heavenly Tribute for that year.
Link knew nothing about these things.
At this moment, Link's group had already left Sandy Island and was heading for their next stop.
