Chapter 195: Chapter 195: Holy Light and Devil Fruit Users
"Vice Admiral Wright, you must not be unfamiliar with Chopper's situation, right?"
Doctor Hiriluk, a man who had "died twice," spoke with a carefree smile, undeterred even when facing a Marine Vice Admiral.
"As a Vice Admiral of Marine Headquarters, I imagine you've encountered plenty of extraordinary phenomena."
"That's right."
Wright nodded. "With today's advancements, even lifeless objects like swords and cannons can be made to 'consume' Devil Fruits, let alone a reindeer who was already an animal to begin with."
"This... that's incredible!"
The three listeners, hearing this rare secret even unknown to most Marines, were utterly astonished.
"So, Chopper, never think of yourself as a monster. While it's true that Devil Fruit users aren't all that common, they're not exactly rare either. Compared to some of the more bizarre ones, you're in pretty good company."
"Have you ever seen a man who can transform into a cloud of smoke?"
"Have you seen someone who can render you completely mute, no matter how much you scream?"
"Have you met someone whose hands can sprout iron bars?"
"Or someone who, with a single touch, can make you lose ten years of your age?"
"Wow~~!"
Chopper's large eyes sparkled with wonder. "That's amazing!"
"Exactly. So, don't let your identity trouble you. Focus on learning medicine."
"Doctor Kureha's skills might not be unmatched, but they're certainly rare in this world—make the most of it!"
"Mm-hmm!"
"Vice Admiral Wright, I... have a favor to ask of you."
The action-oriented Kureha, having decided to take Chopper as her apprentice, hurried back to her treehouse to gather materials. She wanted to start with the basics for teaching Chopper, a boy who knew next to nothing about medicine and had even been slightly misled by Hiriluk's eccentricities.
Back in the treehouse, with only three people remaining, Hiriluk hesitated for a moment before speaking up.
"What is it?"
"I want Chopper to join the Marines after he learns medicine from Kureha."
Wright was taken aback. Hiriluk, a man who championed the freedom of the pirate flag, wanted Chopper to join the Marines?
"Why? The Marines have many rules and restrictions. This seems at odds with the free-spirited philosophy you've been teaching."
"Maybe it's because I've died twice now..."
Hiriluk chuckled. "I find myself cherishing life more than ever. Maybe I just don't want my son to suffer at sea? Especially since you're a Marine, Vice Admiral Wright!
"If you were the one chasing him, Chopper wouldn't stand a chance."
"Ah! If I became a pirate, Wright-sensei would hunt me down? That's terrifying!"
Chopper was startled. He remembered fainting in front of Wright at the castle and hadn't even gotten a good look at him. The thought of being hunted was horrifying.
Shaking his head vigorously to dispel the scary image, Chopper looked at Wright pitifully. "Wright-sensei! Please don't kill me!"
"You idiot, you haven't done anything wrong. Why would I kill you?"
Wright was both amused and exasperated. If Chopper joined the Marines, Luffy might never even make it to Sabaody Archipelago.
"I'm very open to the idea of Chopper joining the Marines, but if he's focusing on studying medicine, I know of a place better suited than Marine Headquarters."
"Such a place exists?"
Hiriluk was intrigued. Drum Island was already one of the most renowned medical nations in the Grand Line.
"When Chopper completes his studies, I'll take him there. Compared to joining the Marines, he can help far more people there."
"Then I'll leave it to you, Vice Admiral Wright."
Soon, Kureha returned to Hiriluk's treehouse.
"Come with me, Chopper. I've gathered the materials. You'll stay at my place—I'm not going to come here to teach you."
"Ah... but I don't want to leave the doctor..."
Chopper hid behind Hiriluk, his voice small and reluctant.
"It's okay, Chopper. I'll visit you every day."
Hiriluk glanced at his workbench. "I also have important work to do here... that thirty-year-long project of mine. It's sure to save this country!"
"...Everyone, I have an idea."
Wright hesitated but finally spoke.
Kureha looked at him skeptically. "An idea? Don't tell me you're asking about my secret to staying young?"
"...Definitely not!"
Wright's mouth twitched as he stepped toward Chopper. "Kid, if there's a chance for you to gain healing abilities like mine, would you give it a try?"
"What?!"
Kureha and Hiriluk were both stunned. "You... you can transfer your ability to someone else?!"
That was unheard of! Could Devil Fruit users even do such a thing?
"It depends on him. This is just a possibility," Wright said, glancing at Kureha. "Since Chopper is a Devil Fruit user, I've never tested this on another user before, so I can't guarantee success."
"But it's worth trying," Hiriluk said after a moment of contemplation, his tone serious.
Wright's abilities were undeniably powerful—Hiriluk himself was living proof, feeling better than he ever had.
"I... I want to try!"
Chopper looked up at Wright, the powerful doctor standing before him. In his eyes, anyone who could heal was a doctor.
If he could gain abilities like Wright's and master Kureha's medical techniques, he could surely become the "panacea" he aspired to be.
"Alright, let's give it a shot."
Wright placed his hand on Chopper's head. "Relax... just focus on your inner self."
"Holy Light Infusion—Lightforged Trial!"
A warm, golden radiance enveloped Chopper's small body. He felt as though he were soaking in a warm bath—utterly comforting.
"Hmm?"
With his Observation Haki fully activated, Wright monitored Chopper closely. His expression changed as the golden light around his hands began to ripple.
"Just as I thought... it's not that simple!"
In Wright's perception, everything seemed fine at first, but halfway through the infusion, complications arose.
The Holy Light's energy clashed with Chopper's Devil Fruit abilities, creating a rejection effect.
Regular healing or even injury caused by the Holy Light hadn't shown this kind of rejection before.
But when trying to implant the "seed of light" within a Devil Fruit user, the incompatibility became apparent.
"It's almost as if... the Devil Fruit truly embodies demonic power. But that's impossible!"
"No... it's not exactly counteracting demonic energy. It feels more like... a fundamental incompatibility between two distinct power systems," Wright mused.
As the golden glow gradually faded, Wright withdrew his hand and let out a long breath.
"How did it go?"
Hiriluk saw Chopper collapse, and with Wright's serious expression, he couldn't help but ask anxiously.
"It failed... as expected, it doesn't work on Devil Fruit users."
Kureha looked thoughtful. "Two powers can't coexist within one person... like how one person can't eat two Devil Fruits?"
"...That seems to be the case."
Her speculation was close enough—though there were still some differences.
"Did I... fail, Wright-sensei?"
Chopper had regained consciousness and overheard their conversation. He lowered his head in disappointment.
"No, it's my fault."
"It seems you'll have to work even harder if you want to become the 'panacea' you aspire to be. There are no shortcuts!"

Author's Note: Regarding the royal family of Alabasta, the Nefertari family has governed Alabasta since 800 years ago. King Cobra refers to himself as the "Twelfth King of the Nafiya* Kingdom," not the "Twelfth King of Alabasta." This aligns with the timeline, as Eiichiro Oda mentioned that in the One Piece world, humans can live up to 140 years (with the exception of Kureha). A succession period of over 70 years per king is not surprising. The palace guards also stated that the Alabasta royal palace has a history spanning 4,000 years. Therefore, Alabasta existed for at least 3,000 years before the Nefertari family came to power. It feels similar to the dynasties in our own history.
TL/N: Nafiya/Nafua Kingdom... I have no knowledge of this, nor can I find any reference through simple searching on internet. If you do know, share it!
