Chapter 196: Chapter 196: The Fourth Generation Lightforged Beacon
Wright dialed a Den Den Mushi and provided Vice Admiral Tsuru with a detailed report of recent events. Naturally, the matter involving Wapol remained undisclosed.
Even with Tsuru's remarkable intellect, she couldn't have foreseen such a series of events unfolding. After all, Hiriluk had turned his mere two weeks of life expectancy into something nearly infinite.
Bidding farewell to Kureha, Hiriluk, and Chopper, Wright transformed into a streak of golden light and disappeared, leaving the trio in stunned silence.
At the Lightforged Beacon in Alabasta, Wright's figure emerged amidst the flash of golden light. The guards stationed nearby quickly approached.
"Vice Admiral Wright!"
"You've done well. Take me to King Cobra."
"Yes, sir! Please follow me!"
It was evident the guards had received orders from King Cobra to await Wright's arrival.
In the Alabasta reception hall, Wright was once again reunited with King Cobra and Princess Vivi.
"Vice Admiral Wright, did everything go smoothly?" Cobra inquired, noticing that Wright's demeanor seemed relaxed—a promising sign. His voice carried a tinge of optimism.
"It was a close call. Fortunately, we made it… just by a few seconds," Wright replied with a wry smile. Leaning forward, he massaged his temples. "Using Alabasta as a waypoint was the fastest option."
Cobra and Vivi exchanged a knowing glance. Wright had mentioned before that he was on a rescue mission. Without the Alabasta beacon saving him considerable time, even he would've been powerless to change the outcome.
"The Grand Line is far too vast," Wright lamented, spreading his hands helplessly. "Just the other day, I received a message from Dr. Vegapunk. The newest fourth-generation Lightforged Beacons are currently undergoing testing."
"If successful, these beacons could allow regular individuals—not just me—to utilize their capabilities! With stable operations, the next step would be large-scale implementation."
Cobra was left speechless, staring at Wright in astonishment.
"Really? Vice Admiral Wright!" Vivi exclaimed, unable to contain her excitement. "Does that mean we could explore the entire kingdom in a single day?"
"Such teleportation must come at a high cost," Cobra interjected thoughtfully. "Even if it becomes feasible, its greatest potential lies in connecting islands, enabling rapid responses to emergencies. If ordinary citizens can use it, this invention would significantly impact global development."
Cobra's expression grew serious. "However, Vice Admiral Wright, undertaking such an initiative…"
He gestured upward with a finger, his face revealing concern.
"Your Majesty, it hasn't reached the scale you're imagining. Still, 'above' has already taken action," Wright said with a faint, cryptic smile. "The fourth-generation Lightforged Beacons are powered by Lightforged Crystals—a strategic-level rescue resource that's exceedingly rare."
"So, those above won't make things too ugly."
"Dr. Vegapunk has subtly indicated that once this project is completed, he'll be forcibly relocated to a classified research facility to work on government-mandated projects."
Wright scoffed, shaking his head. "Internally within the Navy, outfitting beacons for instantaneous personnel transfer between headquarters and branches won't face much resistance."
"However, Your Majesty, the ideal scenario you're envisioning… it's a future possibility, but not today."
Cobra remained silent, his gaze fixed on Wright, his eyes flickering with contemplation.
The tension between the two was palpable, the air thick enough to stifle. Even young Vivi, sensing the mood, pressed her lips together, unwilling to interrupt.
Finally, Vivi couldn't hold back any longer. "Father! Vice Admiral Wright! What's going on? Why would 'they' obstruct something so beneficial?"
"Vivi!" Cobra's voice turned stern, his royal presence, honed over Alabasta's 800-year Nefertari lineage, asserting itself. "Wright's ambitions… I've heard of them."
"If the 'future' you speak of truly has a chance of realization…"
"At the right time, Alabasta will lend you its full support!"
Wright was taken aback. "Your Majesty… are you serious?"
"Of course," Cobra replied, relaxing his tone. "Vice Admiral Wright, everything you've done thus far benefits the people immensely. This is a good thing—not only for Alabasta but for the entire world."
"You will need considerable support."
"I understand," Wright responded solemnly, rising to offer a deep bow.
"I shall take my leave. When there's good news, I will inform you promptly."
...
Returning to G-5 after a few days, Wright finally received orders from Fleet Admiral Sengoku.
"Wright, Dr. Vegapunk has officially submitted his research report. The fourth-generation Lightforged Beacon is complete!"
Inside the Fleet Admiral's office at Marineford, Sengoku leaned on his desk, his expression grave as he addressed Wright, who was seated on the couch.
"However, it can only transport one person at a time. Transporting multiple people or large objects remains a significant challenge."
"Even so, this revolutionary invention has predictably been restricted in its usage—it's limited to Navy bases only."
"The reason?" Sengoku smirked. "To avoid drawing pirates' attention. It's not entirely baseless."
"You should personally visit the research institute—Dr. Vegapunk needs to discuss upgrading older beacons with you."
Wright snorted derisively. "Those higher-ups… pathetic."
"Does this mean the Navy will fully implement the fourth-generation beacons?" Wright asked.
"Exactly," Sengoku nodded. "High-ranking officers at headquarters can directly deploy to any branch base, exponentially increasing our capability to strike at pirates!"
"It's a shame," Sengoku mused, narrowing his eyes. "If these beacons could be placed on known islands—or even just the critical ones—then my vision of 'Supreme Justice' might finally be realized."
Wright shrugged. "Don't get too ahead of yourself, old man. If that day comes, you won't be Fleet Admiral anymore."
With that, Wright vanished in a flash of golden light, leaving Sengoku deep in thought, stroking his braided beard.
"The temptation is immense… If Dr. Vegapunk continues his research, even multi-person teleportation might become possible."
"At that point, no storm would be beyond the Navy's power to suppress. The era of sweeping justice would prevail!"
"Dr. Vegapunk… The Science Research Institute… must remain the Navy's Science Research Institute!"
Using a standard teleportation mode through Vegapunk's beacon registry, Wright arrived at the heavily secured research institute—a place notoriously difficult to access.
"Well, well! Doctor, long time no see!" Wright greeted as he stepped into the lab.
Vegapunk, holding a cup of coffee, nearly dropped it in surprise. "Whoa!"
"I've decided—the Lightforged Beacon needs an alert system! Having someone suddenly appear like that… it's impossible to get used to!"
Setting down his cup, Vegapunk grabbed a roll of blueprints and began sketching furiously, entirely ignoring Wright's presence.
Wright scratched his head awkwardly. "Top-tier scientists… your efficiency is truly something to behold."
