Chapter 120: Iron Birch and the Young Swordsman
Using his ability, Jon created a small wooden boat and quickly landed on his target island.
The moment he set foot on the island, he activated Observation Haki, immediately sensing numerous lifeforms.
Most of these were animals and plants, but a few were human presences.
This was not an uninhabited island—there were people living here.
However, whether they had settlements or were merely isolated tribespeople remained unclear.
In the One Piece world, where the seas dominate, countless islands exist, many of which are far apart from each other.
As a result, some islanders never leave their homeland for their entire lives, and their civilizations remain undeveloped.
In many cases, islanders are no different from primitive tribespeople.
The island was not very large, and after disembarking, Jon headed straight into the dense forest.
A Day of Exploration
Jon spent a full day exploring the island.
Although he discovered many unfamiliar plants, they were all ordinary flowers, trees, and shrubs.
Some of the trees were quite tall, but they were similar to ones he had encountered before—tall but lacking durability.
The first plant island yielded very little of value.
However, Jon wasn't discouraged—this was just one of four islands on his list.
More importantly, he could now confirm that this was not the island he was looking for.
With nothing worthwhile, Jon quickly departed, sailing toward his next destination.
A Major Discovery
A few days later, Jon arrived at another island.
Unlike the first plant island, this one held a major find.
What caught Jon's attention the most was a particular type of tree—
A tree harder than steel.
It strongly resembled a certain wood from his previous life:
Iron Birch!
Iron Birch was one of the hardest woods in the world.
The tree Jon found was remarkably similar to it.
Though it wasn't particularly tall, it was incredibly tough.
Its flexibility might not compare to the Treasure Tree Adam, but in terms of hardness, it was nearly on par.
This wood was perfect for crafting weapons and had many other practical uses.
Since these trees were rare and valuable, it took Jon a long time to fully analyze their composition and reach the point where he could reproduce them using his ability.
A Sea Battle Unfolds
"Commander Jon, there seems to be a battle ahead on the water!"
During the voyage, one of the crew members approached Jon with a report.
Although the crew owned the ship, Jon's rank and status far exceeded theirs—so when an incident occurred, they naturally deferred to him.
"A battle?"
Jon's interest was immediately piqued.
They had been sailing for quite some time, and this was the first conflict they had encountered.
"Let's check it out."
Jon wasn't someone who meddled in random affairs, but after three years of inactivity, he was bored out of his mind.
Now that he was finally out in the field, he couldn't pass up an opportunity for some action.
"Aye, sir!"
The crew was confident in Jon's strength.
Even if they encountered a pirate crew, they had nothing to fear with a Marine officer like Jon on board.
They steered the ship closer to the battle.
Encounter with a Swordsman
As they approached, Jon got a clear view of the conflict.
A medium-sized pirate ship was engaged in battle.
A pirate flag flew from its mast—clearly marking it as an enemy vessel.
The fight was taking place on the ship itself.
Jon had yet to activate Haki, but he suddenly saw an incredible sword strike flash across the deck—
A single sword arc sliced through the mast, snapping it in half.
"Oh? A Swordmaster?"
Having spent seven years at Marine HQ, Jon had trained his skills and gained extensive combat experience.
He had witnessed a wide variety of fighters—those who specialized in martial arts, swordsmanship, or Devil Fruit abilities.
The ability to unleash a flying sword slash like that could only belong to a true swordsman of considerable skill.
Many people in this world wield swords, but those who reach the level of Swordmaster are rare.
And as for Great Swordmasters—they are even rarer.
"Looks like this pirate crew is in trouble. Interesting."
Jon had initially expected this to be a run-of-the-mill sea skirmish, but now that he had encountered a true swordsman, things had become far more entertaining.
More importantly—
As a Marine Commander, there was no way he could just ignore pirates.
A Young Noble Swordsman
The battle on the pirate ship was intense.
A group of pirates was desperately attacking a young swordsman wielding a long blade.
The young man, appearing to be 18 or 19 years old, was elegantly dressed, resembling a noble.
He held his long sword with precision and poise, standing amidst a sea of fallen pirates.
With every slash, another pirate collapsed.
Few could withstand even a single strike from him.
However, the pirates had numbers on their side, surrounding him in wave after wave.
Yet, the young swordsman remained unfazed, skillfully cutting through them without breaking a sweat.
A Third Party Joins
Suddenly, both sides in the battle noticed a ship approaching.
The pirates, in particular, panicked.
They already couldn't handle the young swordsman—if another force joined in, it could spell disaster for them.
Standing apart from the chaos, the pirate captain—a massive, three-meter-tall woman in her thirties—watched with a grim expression.
Female pirate captains were rare, but those who earned the position were always exceptionally strong.
This woman was no exception.
With a bounty of over 40 million beli, she was known as Fat Lady, a pirate blessed with monstrous strength, wielding a spiked club taller than herself.
Her original plan had been to let her crew wear down the young swordsman before personally stepping in.
However, she hadn't expected a third party to arrive before she could act.
"Boy, someone's coming. Do you really want to keep fighting us?"
The young swordsman didn't respond—he simply continued cutting down pirates.
Seeing him ignore her, Fat Lady's expression twisted into a vicious grin.
"Kid, don't think we're scared of you. If we go all out, you won't walk away unscathed either."
"But if we keep fighting like this, someone else will take advantage of the situation."
"How about we deal with this new problem first? Then, if you still want to fight, I'll gladly oblige."
To show her sincerity, Fat Lady shouted at her crew—
"Everyone, stand down!"
Many of the pirates, already terrified by the swordsman's skill, immediately retreated, leaving him standing alone in the center.
The young swordsman frowned slightly.
He had been enjoying the battle—being forced to stop like this was irritating.
His gaze shifted—
Now, he was focused entirely on Fat Lady.
