Chapter 119: A Dark Deal
A group of men wearing Marine uniforms walked by, chatting and laughing.
Upon spotting one of them, Jon immediately smirked with a half-amused, half-taunting expression.
Vitus, returning from a mission with his comrades, was in high spirits.
According to his commanding officer, it wouldn't be long before he received a promotion.
Soon, he would become a Marine Headquarters Colonel.
A colonel was already at the top of the mid-tier Marine ranks—the next step up would be Commodore, a flag officer rank.
Even prodigies like Sakazuki (Akainu) and Borsalino (Kizaru) had only recently been promoted to Commodore.
If Vitus got his promotion, he would be just one rank below them.
More importantly, once he became a full-fledged Colonel, he would finally outrank the person he hated most.
"Hmph, Jon, I—"
Vitus had been in a good mood—until he saw Jon.
The moment Jon came into view, his anger surged, his entire face twisting in rage.
His hands trembled as he glared at Jon with uncontained fury.
"Vitus."
His sudden change in demeanor caught the attention of his comrades.
Following his gaze, they, too, spotted Jon's smirking face—and their expressions darkened.
"Vitus, you—"
As Vitus' companions, they were well aware of the grudge between him and Jon.
Fearing that Vitus might act recklessly, they prepared to step in and calm him down.
But to their shock, Vitus simply snorted coldly, then turned around and walked away without saying a word.
"What the—?"
The Marine officers hesitated for a moment before quickly following Vitus.
"That guy..."
Jon was equally surprised.
He had deliberately stopped walking just to see Vitus' reaction upon seeing him.
He had expected Vitus to confront him head-on.
But instead, Vitus avoided him entirely, turning around and leaving.
"Annoying as he is, I have to admit... he kept his word. He really did go out of his way to avoid me."
This was the first time Jon had encountered Vitus since their confrontation at G-1 Base a year ago.
For Vitus to actually keep his promise and steer clear of him was unexpected.
After mulling it over briefly, Jon shrugged it off and continued toward the harbor, preparing to set sail from Marine Headquarters.
While Marine HQ had its own fleet of warships, it also had private civilian vessels for transport.
After all, Marineford wasn't exclusively for Marines—there were also civilians, merchants, and families living there.
Since non-military personnel weren't allowed to freely board warships, there was a large demand for civilian-operated vessels.
Most of these boats were run by the families of Marines, making them trustworthy.
However, Jon didn't need to rely on them.
He had already arranged his own transport—and he didn't even have to spend a single beli.
Speaking of money, Jon couldn't help but feel pleased with himself.
For the past three years, he had only received his base Marine salary.
Although he had no major expenses, his earnings over the years were barely enough for someone like Borsalino to have a few nights of luxury.
But Jon was far from a rule-follower.
Since he couldn't increase his salary, he found another way.
He had formed a secret partnership with Rear Admiral Lucien from the Logistics Department.
Using his ability, Jon created various types of food, which Lucien then sold through his connections.
The profits?
They split the earnings.
Jon understood the situation perfectly.
While he could produce food, he had no means to distribute it.
Lucien, on the other hand, was a Rear Admiral—a high-ranking officer responsible for logistics, with connections everywhere.
Since Jon owed Lucien a favor, their relationship was already decent.
So when Jon suggested this business venture, Lucien didn't even pretend to object—which meant he was already interested.
Thus, after some back-and-forth negotiations, they struck a deal.
However, Lucien made it clear—he couldn't do this alone.
Others needed to be brought in.
Jon understood completely.
This wasn't a small-time operation that just two people could pull off.
After extensive discussions, both Jon and Lucien, along with Lucien's contacts, reached an agreement:
Jon would take 30% of the profits.
The remaining 70% would go to Lucien's side.
At first glance, it seemed like Jon was getting the short end of the deal.
But in reality, he knew that for him, this was pure profit.
It was a risk-free business—getting 30% was already a fantastic deal.
Meanwhile, Lucien and his associates shared the remaining 70%—which wasn't excessive given how many people were involved.
Most importantly, Jon only needed to produce food—he didn't have to handle anything else.
All he had to do was wait for the money to roll in.
In just one year, Jon made a fortune.
And it wasn't just him—Lucien and his men also raked in massive profits.
To further solidify their alliance, Lucien arranged for Jon to meet their inner circle in secret.
It was then that Jon met Lucien's true superior—a Marine Vice Admiral who oversaw the entire Logistics Department.
Jon wasn't surprised that the Logistics Chief was involved.
After all, their operation had grown too large over the past year.
They might have hidden it from most, but fooling the Logistics Chief was impossible.
Surprisingly, the Vice Admiral had no intention of shutting them down.
Instead, he had already planned to join in.
According to him, their operation was technically legal.
They weren't stealing from the Marines—they were selling their own food.
Even if they were caught, the worst they'd face was a minor policy violation.
Besides, Marines were still human—who didn't have side hustles?
And since their operation had fed and benefited so many, only an idiot would try to expose them.
In the grand scheme of things, their sales volume was nothing compared to the global food supply.
Thus, despite operating for only a year, Jon's wealth skyrocketed.
If Borsalino ever found out, he'd probably show up every day trying to mooch off of him.
After choosing a nearby island as his destination, Jon set sail.
The journey took three days.
During that time, he became acquainted with the crew.
This ship had been arranged for him by Lucien, who knew about Jon's travel plans.
Though small, the vessel was crewed by seasoned sailors, all of whom were trusted allies.
"Commander Jon, we've reached the island recorded on the Log Pose. Where would you like to dock?"
Jon gazed ahead and said, "There are probably reefs ahead. No need to dock—sail a bit further, and I'll go ashore myself. Just wait for me there."
The crew, well aware of the abilities of Marine officers, had no objections and simply nodded in agreement.
