Chapter 5: Chapter 5: The End of the Pirate King!
The sky hung heavy, cloaked in an ominous shroud.
Three days passed in the blink of an eye.
The execution day of Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King, had arrived!
The entire town of Loguetown was steeped in an oppressive air of foreboding.
The massive execution platform stood ready, flanked by Transponder Snails prepped to broadcast the event live at a moment's notice.
Beneath the platform, a dense crowd of spectators gathered.
They had come to witness history, eager to see the Pirate King himself and to learn what kind of expression he would wear at the moment of his death.
Would he beg for mercy?
Break down in tears?
Or perhaps regret his past deeds?
This anticipation was what they lived for.
"Karl, bring Roger to the execution platform!"
"Understood."
With the command given, Karl escorted Gol D. Roger toward the towering scaffold at the heart of the square.
Smoker stood guard at the base of the platform, ensuring no one dared approach recklessly.
Roger, led to his fate, offered no resistance. Instead, a faint trace of relief lingered in his gaze.
"So, the day has come at last. Tell me, Karl, any thoughts?"
"Thoughts? All I care about is finishing the job quickly so I can go home to a decent meal."
"Hahaha! That's exactly what I'd expect from you!"
Their voices were low, inaudible to the crowd.
But those watching Roger could tell that the Pirate King remained composed, almost as if returning home, without the slightest hint of fear.
"As expected of the Pirate King. Such calm in the face of death is awe-inspiring!"
"I'd crumble in his place. There's no way I could face this with such poise."
"Hah! It's just a façade. Let's see how composed he looks when the moment comes!"
"Zehehehe... I'm curious to see if the mighty Pirate King will beg for his life at the last second."
"Fufufufu… it's going to be a sight worth waiting for."
Below, the chatter grew louder as the crowd speculated and jeered.
Karl brought Roger to the top of the platform and looked down disdainfully at the sea of people below.
"Look closely, Roger. These so-called 'brave men' of yours are just waiting to see you disgrace yourself."
"Don't waste your time trying to provoke me. It won't work. But you're right—these aren't the people I was hoping to inspire."
Roger sighed wistfully. Meanwhile, Karl adjusted the camera-equipped Transponder Snail to focus squarely on Roger.
"One minute until execution."
"Understood!"
With Sengoku's orders delivered, Karl took the execution spear and positioned it against Roger's chest, aimed at his heart.
Suddenly, a crack of thunder tore through the air.
The clouds above thickened ominously, and rain poured down without warning, drenching everyone present. The downpour lent an eerie, somber weight to the atmosphere in Loguetown.
At that moment, a voice from the crowd shouted:
"Roger! Did you really find Laugh Tale? Where is your treasure? You're about to die anyway—just tell us!"
"Yeah! If you're going to die, hand over the treasure already!"
"That's right! Give us the treasure! We'll take care of the rest for you!"
"I'm destined to inherit your riches! Hahahaha!"
"Hahaha!"
The crowd erupted into laughter, mocking both the greedy opportunists among them and the Pirate King on the brink of death.
Roger, however, responded with a faint smile. His eyes burned with an intense, untamed light as he shouted suddenly:
"You want my treasure, do you?"
"If you want it, you can have it!"
"Search for it! I left everything in one place!"
"Karl! Cut the broadcast immediately and proceed with the execution!"
Sengoku's urgent voice roared through the Transponder Snail as Roger's declaration reverberated through the square.
But Roger had already completed his plan. Smiling calmly, he accepted his fate.
The crowd was stunned into silence. None had expected such a proclamation from the Pirate King at the brink of death.
Karl, however, did not immediately follow through. Instead, he tossed aside the execution spear and unsheathed his Sandai Kitetsu.
He grabbed Roger by the hair and lifted him for all to see.
"So, you want the One Piece? You want Roger's treasure?"
"How laughable!"
The unexpected outburst froze everyone in their tracks. Even Sengoku and Garp, watching from behind the scenes, had no idea what Karl was planning.
Roger, restrained, sensed danger. His expression grew wary, reminiscent of the moment Karl had seen through him days earlier in prison.
"Even if someone finds the One Piece, even if another becomes the Pirate King, it doesn't matter!"
"Here stands a Pirate King—Gol D. Roger. Look at him now! Reduced to this pathetic state!"
"For the sake of a dream, people will shed blood, shatter bones, and, in the end, meet the same fate. Becoming the Pirate King won't save anyone from the Navy's pursuit!"
"Because this is the inevitable end for all scum like you!"
Without warning, Karl swung his blade, severing Roger's head in a flash.
Gasps filled the square as the crowd recoiled in shock.
The execution had come so suddenly that no one, not even Sengoku, had been prepared for it.
Karl held up Roger's severed head, its faintly bewildered expression captured perfectly, and turned it toward the camera.
"See this? This is the Pirate King's fate! From this day forward, anyone who dares to seek that title will meet the same end—by my hand!"
"This I, Karl, swear!"
With those words, Karl threw Roger's head to the ground. A wave of Conqueror's Haki burst forth from him, overwhelming most of the crowd.
The spectators were paralyzed, stunned into silence by Karl's display.
Among them, a young red-haired man and a boy with a red nose broke down in tears, devastated by Roger's death.
"Karl! What the hell are you doing?!"
Sengoku's voice thundered furiously through the Transponder Snail.
Karl remained unfazed, replying calmly:
"Mission accomplished, old man. Your move now."
"When you return, you're answering for this!"
Sengoku's voice faltered momentarily before the transmission ended abruptly.
Meanwhile, the Navy began their operation.
In the chaos below, pirates scattered, retreat plans already in motion.
As Karl prepared to leave the execution platform, a mechanical voice echoed in his mind:
[Target eliminated: Gol D. Roger. Extra sign-in mission complete. Reward: Conqueror's Haki upgraded to Perfect Level.]
